HPE ProLiant DL360 G7 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL360 G7, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon 5600 series processors for twelve cores in total, and the second socket does more than add cores — it is what makes the other nine DIMM slots usable, and the kit that fills it brings the fourth fan module with it.

DL360 G7 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, on the Intel 5520 chipset, upgradeable from one processor to two
  • Family: Intel Xeon 5600 series; the letter before the model number denotes the class, with X for high performance, E for mainstream enterprise and L for lower wattage
  • Six-core kits stocked: X5670 at 2.93GHz, X5660 at 2.80GHz and X5650 at 2.66GHz, all 95W, plus the 60W L5640 at 2.26GHz
  • Quad-core kits stocked: E5640, E5630 and E5620 at 80W, and the 40W L5630 at 2.13GHz
  • Cache: up to 12MB of level 3 cache on Xeon 5600 series parts
  • Features: Intel Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost on the supporting models
  • Kit contents: every processor kit comes complete with heatsink and fans, and the kit for a second processor contains the additional fan module this chassis needs

A second processor does more than add cores. With only one CPU installed, nine of the eighteen DIMM slots are unavailable, so adding the second is what opens the rest of the memory capacity. It also takes the server from three fan modules to four — and HPE puts that extra fan module inside the processor option kit.

Six cores or four, and at what wattage?

ClassExampleWattageSuits
X — high performanceX5670 2.93GHz 6-core95WClock-sensitive workloads, where power and cooling allow
E — mainstreamE5620 2.40GHz 4-core80WGeneral virtualisation and application hosting
L — lower wattage, six-coreL5640 2.26GHz 6-core60WCore count inside a tight power budget
L — lower wattage, quad-coreL5630 2.13GHz 4-core40WThe lightest draw of the option kits

The letter matters as much as the core count in a 1U chassis, because the cooling has less room to work with than a 2U server's. An L5640 gives six cores inside 60 watts; an X5670 gives six faster cores and asks for 95. HPE's fastest parts for this server, the 3.46GHz X5690 and the 3.60GHz X5687, are configure-to-order only and not sold individually, so 95W is the practical ceiling on an option kit.

Choosing the Right DL360 G7 Processor

  • A second processor unlocks the other half of the memory. With one CPU installed, only nine of the eighteen DIMM slots are available, and DIMMs must never be fitted to an empty socket's slots.
  • The second kit brings the fan it needs. Going from one processor to two takes the server from three fan modules to four, and HPE puts that module in the processor option kit.
  • Low-voltage memory needs a 5600 series part. If the server runs PC3L modules, the processor choice is constrained to that family.
  • Balance the memory across both sockets. HPE's guidance is to balance total capacity between installed processors, so a second CPU usually means buying DIMMs alongside it.
  • Check the power supply against the wattage. Two 95W processors, eight drives and two cards is a different budget from a single 40W part.

DL360 G7 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the DL360 G7 support?
Intel Xeon 5600 series, up to two of them for twelve cores in total. Stocked option kits run from the 95W X5670, X5660 and X5650 six-core parts down to the 60W L5640 and the 40W quad-core L5630.

Why can I not buy an X5690 kit for this server?
HPE lists the 3.46GHz X5690 and the 3.60GHz X5687 as configure-to-order only for the DL360 G7, sold as factory two-processor kits rather than individually. The fastest parts available as an option kit are 95W.

Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. With only one processor installed, nine of the eighteen DIMM slots are unavailable, so the second CPU is what opens the rest of the memory capacity.

Do DL360 G7 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor option kit for this server comes complete with heatsink and fans, and the kit for the second processor also contains the fourth fan module the chassis needs.

What do the X, E and L letters mean?
They denote performance and wattage class. X is high performance and high wattage, E is mainstream enterprise, and L is lower wattage for density or power-constrained racks.

Do I need to add memory when I add a processor?
Usually. HPE's population guidance is to balance total memory capacity between the installed processors, and DIMMs must not be fitted to the slots of a socket that has no processor in it.
