HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 Parts
The HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 is a scalable-system node rather than a standalone rack server: a 2U half-width tray that slides into an HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, four trays to one 4U chassis, and what separates it from the 1U trays beside it is room for three accelerators. SL250s Gen8 Platform at a Glance
- Form factor: a 2U half-width tray; the s6500 chassis around it is 4U full-width and holds four of them
- Processors: up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 series on the Intel C600 chipset, two to eight cores per socket, with 5MB to 20MB of level 3 cache
- Memory: 16 DDR3 DIMM slots per tray — four channels per processor, two DIMMs per channel — to 256GB registered or 128GB unbuffered
- Accelerators: up to three computational or graphics accelerators, each in a full-length, full-height PCI Express 3.0 x16 position HPE lists as GPU only
- Drive bays: four hot-plug 2.5-inch SFF bays at the front, plus four quick release positions inside the tray where the SFF internal enablement kit replaces the three GPUs

The three accelerator positions and the four internal drive positions are the same space. A 2U SL250s tray takes up to three computational or graphics accelerators, or four extra 2.5-inch drives where the SFF internal enablement kit replaces them — never both. The four hot-plug bays at the front are unaffected either way, and power and cooling come from the s6500 chassis rather than the tray.

Is the SL250s Gen8 a standalone server?
No. It is a 2U half-width tray that installs in an HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, and the chassis supplies power, cooling and shared systems management. Up to four trays fit one 4U chassis.
What is the difference between the SL250s Gen8 and the SL230s Gen8?
Accelerator capacity. The SL250s is a 2U tray with three full-length, full-height PCIe 3.0 x16 positions for GPUs or coprocessors; the 1U SL230s has none, and eight SL230s trays fit a chassis where four SL250s do.
How many accelerators does one SL250s Gen8 tray take?
Up to three. HPE caps Tesla K20, K20X and K40 GPUs, GRID K2 and Xeon Phi 5110p coprocessors at three per tray and Xeon Phi 7120p at two, and mixing accelerator types within one server is not allowed.
Does the SL250s Gen8 have its own power supply?
No. Power comes from the Common Slot hot-plug supplies in the s6500 chassis and cooling from its eight fan bays, so neither is a tray-level part.
How much storage fits inside one SL250s Gen8 tray?
The four hot-plug bays at the front reach 4.8TB on 1.2TB SAS drives. Four more quick release drives fit inside the tray with the SFF internal enablement kit, but only in place of the three GPUs.
Can SL250s Gen8 trays share a chassis with other SL nodes?
SL250s and SL230s trays can be intermixed in one s6500 chassis because they carry the same Carbondale firmware version. SL270s trays cannot be mixed with them, unless every server in the chassis uses Ivy Bridge processors.
