HPE ProLiant SL270s Gen8 Parts

The HPE ProLiant SL270s Gen8 is a node rather than a standalone rack server: a 4U half-width tray that slides into a 4U full-width HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, two trays to a chassis, with the chassis supplying power and cooling. It is the accelerator-density member of the family, at up to eight accelerators per tray and sixteen per chassis. SL270s Gen8 Platform at a Glance

• Form factor: a 4U half-width tray; the s6500 chassis around it is 4U full-width and takes two, ordered as a left tray and a right tray
• Processors: up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 series, two to twelve cores per socket, with 5MB to 30MB of level 3 cache
• Memory: 16 DDR3 SmartMemory slots per tray — eight per processor, two channels of four — to 256GB registered, 128GB unbuffered or 512GB load reduced
• Drive bays: up to eight 2.5-inch hot-plug SFF bays, none fitted as standard — 9.6TB on 1.2TB SAS, 8.0TB on 1TB SATA or 6.4TB on 800GB SSDs
• Storage controller: embedded HPE H220i host bus adapter, which becomes the B320i Dynamic Smart Array with a firmware update
• Accelerators: eight PCIe 3.0 x16 full-length slots, GPU only — eight Tesla K20, K20x or K40 GPUs or Xeon Phi 5110p coprocessors, six AMD FirePro S9150, or four GRID K2 or K80
• Networking: an embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i adapter, one FlexibleLOM slot and one low-profile PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot
• Management: embedded HPE iLO 4 on a dedicated 1Gb management port, plus an internal micro SD slot and an SUV port
• Power and cooling: both from the s6500 chassis — Common Slot hot-plug supplies at 750W, 1200W and 1500W across four slots, and eight fan bays

This tray cannot share a chassis with an SL230s or an SL250s. HPE states that an s6500 cannot hold a mix of SL270s with SL250s and/or SL230s trays, because the Carbondale firmware versions differ, and that the configuration cannot be ordered — the exception being a chassis where every server uses Ivy Bridge processors. SL250s and SL230s trays can be intermixed with each other. Two SL270s trays fill one chassis.

Up to eight per tray and sixteen in one chassis. The documented ceilings are eight Tesla K20, K20x or K40 GPUs or Xeon Phi 5110p coprocessors, six AMD FirePro S9150, and four GRID K2 or K80.

Does the SL270s Gen8 have its own power supply or rail kit?
No. Power comes from the Common Slot supplies in the s6500 chassis and cooling from its eight fan bays. The chassis is what mounts in the rack, so the tray has no rails of its own.

What processors does the SL270s Gen8 take?
Up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors, from the two-core E5-2637 to the twelve-core E5-2695 v2. Mixing different models in one tray is not supported.

How much storage fits inside one SL270s Gen8 tray?
Up to eight 2.5-inch hot-plug drives: 9.6TB on 1.2TB SAS, 8.0TB on 1TB SATA, or 6.4TB on 800GB SSDs. None ship standard.
