HPE MSA 1060 Parts

Every part on this page is one HPE lists for the HPE MSA 1060 storage array, an MSA Gen6 model: the compatible hard disk drives and solid state drives, the SFP transceiver 4-pack the Fibre Channel model needs, the MSA 2060 drive enclosures that grow the array, the Mini-SAS cables, the DC power supply option and the bezel lock kit. Every part ships tested or factory sealed. The drives have their own page: HPE MSA 1060 Drives.

HPE MSA 1060 Specifications

  • Form factor: HPE lists the array as “2U, SFF”: “24 drive bay SFF 2U base storage systems”, and “No LFF base storage systems offered.”
  • Controllers: two per array, “Dual hot-swappable active/active controllers”. HPE notes that “The MSA 1060 does not support single controller configurations.”
  • Host connectivity: “2 host ports per controller, 4 host ports per array”, with “8/16Gb Fibre Channel, 1/10Gb iSCSI and 12Gb SAS protocol support” across three array models: 16Gb Fibre Channel, 10GBASE-T iSCSI and 12Gb SAS.
  • What each array includes: “a SFF Array Chassis, two MSA 1060 controllers, two AC power supplies, two 1.5m PDU cords (IEC C13/C14), and one rack-mount kit”. HPE adds that “SFPs are not included with the Fibre Channel array model and are not required for the iSCSI or SAS array model.”
  • Drives: “Maximum total HDDs per array 96 SFF / 24SFF + 36 LFF”, the same for SSDs; “Max raw capacity per array 2.95PB (All SFF)” or “1.6PB (SFF array + LFF drive enclosures)”.
  • Expansion: “0-3 enclosures” on a 12 Gb SAS expansion interface; HPE’s table lists “LFF/SFF array/enclosure mixing” as “Supported”, and the enclosures are MSA 2060 models: “Users may configure an MSA 1060 SFF array enclosure with MSA 2060 SFF and/or LFF Drive Enclosures.”
  • Serviceability: “All MSA 1060 models support hot plug expansion and replacement of redundant controllers, drives, fans, power supplies, and I/O modules”, and “Hot add expansion of drive enclosures is also supported.”
  • Self-encrypting drives: HPE lists FIPS-encrypted SSDs and HDD 6-packs for the array, and “All drives within the MSA 1060 array must be self-encrypted drives to enable the encryption feature.”

Check the host ports and the bays before you order. HPE states that “MSA 1060 Fibre Channel Storage systems do not ship with SFPs” — the Fibre Channel model needs one 4-pack, the SAS and iSCSI models none — and that “MSA 1060 array models only accept SFF HDD and SSD options”, so LFF drives need an MSA 2060 LFF Drive Enclosure, with up to 3 drive enclosures per array.

What Is on This Page, and What Is Not

The parts below are the orderable hardware options from HPE’s MSA 1060 QuickSpecs, grouped as HPE groups them: drives, the SFP transceiver 4-pack, drive enclosures, SAS cables, the DC power supply kit and the security option. Three things HPE lists are deliberately not here. The array models themselves (the three MSA 1060 base models and the Smart Choice arrays) are complete systems, not parts. The Smart Choice options are not listed separately: HPE states that “HPE MSA Smart Choice Arrays can be configured with either standard MSA Options or with options from the MSA Smart Choice Options menu”, and the standard options are the parts on this page. And the fibre optic host cables are generic switch-side cabling that depends on the switch at the other end, so they are not carried as MSA parts; for the 10GBASE-T iSCSI model HPE lists no cable part at all, only that “CAT 6 cables or above are required.” The SAS host cables are here, because HPE lists them for one job each: the fanout cables “are used for direct connect of more than two hosts”, the Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS HD cables “are used to connect the DL and ML ProLiant 12Gb SAS Servers to MSA 1060 SAS Storage system”, and the Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS cables “are used to connect the c-Class 6Gb BladeSystem SAS switch to MSA 1060 SAS Storage system”.

Choosing the Right HPE MSA 1060 Parts

  • LFF drives need an enclosure. HPE: “MSA 1060 array models only accept SFF HDD and SSD options”, and “to use LFF drives with your array configuration, you must add a 2060 LFF Drive Enclosure (R0Q39B)”. “MSA 2060 SFF or LFF Drive Enclosures can be connected to the MSA 1060 SFF Storage systems”, and HPE’s limit is “Add up to 3 additional drive enclosures.”
  • Only the Fibre Channel model takes transceivers. “MSA 1060 Fibre Channel Storage systems do not ship with SFPs”, and “One SFP 4 pack transceiver is required for the 1060 Fibre Channel model.” HPE lists the C8R24B 16Gb 4-pack for the Fibre Channel model (R0Q85B) only, and “MSA 1060 SAS and iSCSI Storage systems do not require SFP modules.”
  • Drive enclosures come cabled for the short run. “Each drive enclosure includes a single rack-mount kit and two 0.5m MiniSAS HD to MiniSAS HD cables”, and “The 1.0m and 2.0m Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS HD cables can also be used for connecting a MSA 1060 SAS controller to a SFF or LFF drive enclosure.”
  • SAS hosts: two direct, more with fanouts. The Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS HD host cables are “Limited to two redundantly connected hosts”, HPE notes that “Fanout cables are highly recommended”, and the fanout cables “are not used for connecting the MSA 1060 to a drive enclosure.”
  • DC power is bought in pairs. “If DC power is desired, then two DC power supplies must be selected on the array enclosure and all drive enclosures.” “One (1) 48VDC 2.3M power cord is included with each R0Q90A kit”, and HPE marks the kit “Required for use in Network Equipment-Building System (NEBS) compliant MSA Gen6 configuration”. AC arrays and enclosures “come standard with two AC power supplies”.
  • Mixing drive types needs a licence. “Customers can mix SSD, Enterprise SAS, and SAS Midline (MDL) drives within the same array configuration”, but “An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same system, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache”. The licence is a software part HPE sells; it is not listed here.

HPE MSA 1060 Parts FAQ

Which drives fit the HPE MSA 1060?
The 12G SAS HDDs and SSDs HPE lists for the MSA 1060, as single drives and 6-pack bundles, including self-encrypting (SED) options. HPE states that "MSA 1060 array models only accept SFF HDD and SSD options", so LFF drives go in an MSA 2060 LFF drive enclosure, and that "Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems". The full list is on the HPE MSA 1060 Drives page.

Does the MSA 1060 come with SFP transceivers?
Not the base models. HPE states that "MSA 1060 Fibre Channel Storage systems do not ship with SFPs" and that "One SFP 4 pack transceiver is required for the 1060 Fibre Channel model." The iSCSI and SAS models need none: "MSA 1060 SAS and iSCSI Storage systems do not require SFP modules." HPE lists one transceiver option for the array, the C8R24B 16Gb Short Wave Fibre Channel SFP+ 4-pack.

How many drive enclosures can I add to an MSA 1060?
Up to 3. HPE states "Add up to 3 additional drive enclosures" and that "MSA 2060 SFF or LFF Drive Enclosures can be connected to the MSA 1060 SFF Storage systems". That takes the array to 96 SFF drives, or 24 SFF plus 36 LFF, and a stated maximum raw capacity of 2.95PB (all SFF) or 1.6PB (SFF array plus LFF drive enclosures).

Can the MSA 1060 use LFF drives?
Only in a drive enclosure. HPE offers "No LFF base storage systems" for the MSA 1060 and states that "to use LFF drives with your array configuration, you must add a 2060 LFF Drive Enclosure (R0Q39B)", the HPE MSA 2060 SAS 12G 2U 12-disk LFF Drive Enclosure listed on this page. Each LFF drive enclosure holds 12 drives.

Do I need a licence to mix HDDs and SSDs in an MSA 1060?
Usually, yes. HPE states that "An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same system, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache", and that "Configurations with all SSDs or with an SSD Read Cache extension do not require an ADS license on the MSA1060 array." The suite "can be purchased as an option on the MSA 1060 Storage systems".

What does the MSA 1060 ship with?
HPE lists each base model as including "a SFF Array Chassis, two MSA 1060 controllers, two AC power supplies, two 1.5m PDU cords (IEC C13/C14), and one rack-mount kit". SFPs "are not included with the Fibre Channel array model"; drives and drive enclosures are not in that list of what the array includes.
