HPE MSA 1050 Parts
Every part on this page is one HPE lists for the HPE MSA 1050 SAN storage array: the compatible 12G SAS hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs), the MSA 2050 disk enclosures that expand it, and the Mini-SAS and Mini-SAS HD cables for disk enclosure and SAS host connections. Every part ships tested or factory sealed. The drives have their own page: HPE MSA 1050 Drives.
HPE MSA 1050 Specifications
- Form factor: HPE lists the array as “2U, SFF or LFF”, with “12 LFF or 24 SFF drive bays, accommodating SSDs, SAS and SAS MDL Drives”.
- Controllers: “Two FC, iSCSI or SAS controllers, depending on model”, with “6 GB cache per controller”. HPE notes that “The MSA 1050 does not support single controller configurations.”
- Host connectivity: “Two host ports per controller”, four per array, and “Each controller supports 8 Gb FC, 1GbE iSCSI, 10GbE iSCSI or 12Gb SAS host connectivity, depending on model”.
- What each array includes: on the 8Gb Fibre Channel models, the array chassis, “two MSA 1050 FC 2-port controllers, 4 8Gb SW FC SFPs installed, two .7m PDU cords (IEC C14), one rack-mount kit”. The 1GbE and 10GbE iSCSI models come with four iSCSI SFPs installed; on the 12Gb SAS models, “SFPs not needed with SAS controllers”.
- Drives: “Maximum total HDDs per array 96 SFF / 48 LFF”, the same for SSDs; “Max raw capacity per array 307.2TB SFF / 672TB LFF”.
- Expansion: “0-3 enclosures” on a 6Gb SAS drive enclosure interface. “Add-on enclosures can either be HPE MSA 2050 LFF Disk Enclosure or HPE MSA 2050 SFF Disk Enclosure.” HPE’s table lists “LFF/SFF array/enclosure mixing” as “Supported”.
- Serviceability: “All MSA 1050 models support hot plug expansion and replacement of redundant controllers, enclosures, fans, power supplies, and I/O modules”, and “Hot add expansion of disk enclosures is also supported.”
Match the SAS cable to its job before you order. HPE lists the Mini-SAS HD host cables to connect a 6Gb or 12Gb “SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller” and states that they “are not used for connecting to a disk enclosure” — a longer disk enclosure run takes the 1m or 2m External Mini SAS cable, and every disk enclosure is an MSA 2050 LFF or SFF model, up to 3 per array.
What Is on This Page, and What Is Not
The parts below are the orderable hardware options from HPE’s MSA 1050 QuickSpecs, grouped as HPE groups them: drives, disk enclosures and SAS cables. Four things HPE lists are deliberately not here. The array models themselves (the eight pre-configured 8Gb Fibre Channel, 12Gb SAS, 1GbE iSCSI and 10GbE iSCSI systems, LFF and SFF) are complete systems, not parts. The fibre optic and direct attach copper host cables are generic switch-side cabling that depends on the switch at the other end, so they are not carried as MSA parts. The two Smart Array SAS controllers HPE lists for SAS infrastructure, the E208e-p and the P408e-p, are PCIe plug-in controllers for the server, not parts of the array. And the Advanced Data Services Suite is software: HPE states it “can be purchased as an option on the MSA 1050 Storage systems”. The SAS cables are carried, because HPE lists them for one job each: the External Mini SAS cables for “Connecting MSA 1050 Controller to a disk enclosure if a longer cable is desired”, and the Mini-SAS HD cables to connect a 6Gb or 12Gb “SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller”.
Choosing the Right HPE MSA 1050 Parts
- The SFPs come installed. HPE lists the Fibre Channel models with “4 8Gb SW FC SFPs installed”, the 1GbE iSCSI models with “4 1Gb RJ-45 iSCSI SFPs installed” and the 10GbE iSCSI models with “4 10Gb SW iSCSI SFPs installed”, and its MSA 1050 option list carries no separate transceiver. On the 10GbE models, “Direct attached copper cables are supported in 10GbE Controller systems”.
- The disk enclosures are MSA 2050 models. “Add up to 3 additional drive enclosures”: the MSA 2050 LFF and SFF Disk Enclosures, each of which “can be connected to either the MSA 1050 SFF or LFF dual controller systems”, and “LFF and/or SFF Disk Enclosures can be mixed up to the maximum of 3 total Disk Enclosures.” “Each drive enclosure includes one rack-mount kit and two 0.5m MiniSAS to MiniSAS cables”; the 1m and 2m External Mini SAS cables are for a longer run.
- Pick the SAS host cable by the initiator. The Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS cables connect a “6Gb SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller”, the Mini-SAS HD 4x to Mini-SAS HD 4x cables a “12Gb SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller”, and HPE states that these “are not used for connecting to a disk enclosure”. For server HBAs HPE adds: “Recommended to utilize Fanout cables when connecting to SAS HBAs for maximum future flexibility without downtime.”
- Mixing SSDs and HDDs as capacity needs a licence. “Customers can mix SSD, SAS, and SAS MDL drives in the same array enclosure and disk enclosure”, but a system that mixes SSDs and HDDs “being used as a capacity Tier (excluding SSD Read Cache), will require the Advanced Data Service Suite LTU”. HPE adds that “All SSD configurations and SSD Read Cache extension do not require a license”. The licence is a software part HPE sells; it is not listed here.

HPE MSA 1050 Parts FAQ
Which drives fit the HPE MSA 1050?
The 12G SAS HDDs and SSDs HPE lists for the MSA 1050, in SFF (2.5in) and LFF (3.5in) form factors: 15K and 10K Enterprise and 7.2K Midline hard drives, Mixed Use and Read Intensive SSDs, and HDD 6-pack bundles. HPE states that "MSA HDDs and SSDs drives are for use with MSA Storage Systems only". The full list is on the HPE MSA 1050 Drives page.
Does the MSA 1050 come with SFP transceivers?
The Fibre Channel and iSCSI models do. HPE lists the 8Gb Fibre Channel arrays with "4 8Gb SW FC SFPs installed", the 1GbE iSCSI arrays with "4 1Gb RJ-45 iSCSI SFPs installed" and the 10GbE iSCSI arrays with "4 10Gb SW iSCSI SFPs installed". On the 12Gb SAS models, "SFPs not needed with SAS controllers".
How many disk enclosures can I add to an MSA 1050?
Up to 3. HPE states that "The MSA 1050 will support a maximum of 3 expansion disk enclosures", either the HPE MSA 2050 LFF Disk Enclosure or the HPE MSA 2050 SFF Disk Enclosure, and that LFF and SFF enclosures can be mixed. HPE lists the array at a maximum of 96 SFF or 48 LFF drives and a raw capacity of 307.2TB SFF or 672TB LFF with the three enclosures added.
Which cable connects a server to an MSA 1050 SAS array?
It depends on the server's SAS initiator. HPE lists the Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS cables to "connect 6Gb SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller" and the Mini-SAS HD 4x to Mini-SAS HD 4x cables to "connect 12Gb SAS initiator to MSA 1050 SAS controller", in 1.0m, 2.0m and 4.0m lengths, and recommends the fanout cables when connecting to SAS HBAs. HPE states that these six Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS and Mini-SAS HD 4x cables are not used for connecting to a disk enclosure.
Do I need a licence to mix HDDs and SSDs in an MSA 1050?
When both are used as capacity, yes. HPE states that a system mixing SSDs and HDDs "being used as a capacity Tier (excluding SSD Read Cache), will require the Advanced Data Service Suite LTU", and that "All SSD configurations and SSD Read Cache extension do not require a license". The licence is a software part and is not listed on this page.
What does the MSA 1050 ship with?
HPE lists each pre-configured model as including the LFF or SFF array chassis, two MSA 1050 2-port controllers of the model's protocol, "two .7m PDU cords (IEC C14), one rack-mount kit", and four SFPs installed on the Fibre Channel and iSCSI models. Drives and disk enclosures are not in that list of what the array includes.
