HPE MSA 2060 / 2062 Drives

Every drive on this page is one HPE lists for the HPE MSA 2060 storage array, the MSA Gen6 generation: 12G SAS hard disk drives (15K and 10K Enterprise in SFF, 7.2K Midline in LFF), Read Intensive solid state drives in SFF and LFF, and the self-encrypting (SED) SSDs and HDD bundles. The HPE MSA 2062 QuickSpecs, in Version 22 or its earlier editions, lists the same single drives and HDD 6-packs, and no SED drives or SSD 6-packs. Singles and 6-pack bundles are both listed. The page includes the drives that earlier editions of HPE’s MSA 2060 QuickSpecs list for the array and Version 24 does not: the 900 GB 15K SFF HDD and its 5.4 TB 6-pack, 6 TB, 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB Midline LFF HDDs with 6-packs of the 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB, three TAA-compliant self-encrypting SSDs and three TAA-compliant self-encrypting HDD 6-packs. Each of them has a note in the parts list naming the HPE editions that list it. Every drive ships tested or factory sealed.

HPE MSA 2060 / 2062 Drive Specifications

  • Interface and form factor: 12 Gb SAS throughout; HPE states that “The MSA 2060 Storage Systems support a wide variety of 3.5-inch LFF and 2.5-inch SFF drives.”
  • SFF HDDs (2.5in), Version 24: “10 K: 600 GB, 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB, 2.4 TB” — Enterprise 10K SAS singles, with 6-packs of the 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB and 2.4 TB drives.
  • LFF HDDs (3.5in), Version 24: Midline 7.2K SAS, listed as 8 TB, 12 TB, 16 TB, 20 TB and 24 TB singles and as a 6-pack of each.
  • SFF SSDs, Version 24: “960 GB, 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB, 7.68 TB” Read Intensive; the 6-packs of the 960 GB, 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB drives “may only be configured with MSA 2060 SFF Flash Bundle arrays models”.
  • LFF SSD, Version 24: “1.92 TB” Read Intensive.
  • Self-encrypting SSDs, Version 24: “SFF: 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB, 15.36 TB, 30.72 TB” and “LFF: 1.92 TB”, FIPS encrypted.
  • Self-encrypting HDDs, Version 24: “SFF: 2.4 TB” and “LFF: 12 TB”, which HPE notes are “Sold in 6 Pack bundles only”.
  • From earlier editions: a 15K Enterprise SFF HDD, 900 GB, single and 6-pack; Midline 7.2K LFF HDDs of 6 TB, 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB, with 6-packs of the 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB; TAA-compliant FIPS-encrypted SSDs, SFF 960 GB and 1.92 TB and LFF 1.92 TB; and TAA-compliant FIPS-encrypted HDD 6-packs of 5.4 TB (15K SFF), 14.4 TB (10K SFF) and 72 TB (7.2K LFF). HPE’s MSA 2060 QuickSpecs lists them from Version 1 (Version 4 for the 18 TB drive and its 6-pack) to Version 16, 17 or 23.
  • NEBS: HPE certifies the 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB and 2.4 TB 10K SFF HDDs and the 960 GB, 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB SFF SSDs “for use in NEBS certified MSA Gen6 configurations”.
  • Maximums: “240 SFF / 120 LFF” drives per MSA 2060 array; “Max raw capacity per array 7.37 PB (All SFF) / 2.88 PB (All LFF)”.

Check the generation before you buy. HPE states that “Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems” — so a drive from an MSA 2050 or MSA 2040 does not carry over to an MSA 2060 — and a self-encrypting drive only brings encryption when every drive in the array is SED.

Which drive type does the MSA 2060 need?

HPE describes the three classes it lists for the MSA 2060 in one line each: “Solid-State Drives (SSDs) deliver the highest levels of performance and reliability”; “Enterprise-class SAS hard disk drives (10K RPM) offer a balance of performance, capacity, and cost while delivering enterprise grade reliability”; and “Midline SAS hard disk drives (7.2K RPM) are optimized to provide the best ratio of capacity to cost”. On the MSA 2060 the 15K and 10K Enterprise drives are SFF, the 7.2K Midline drives are LFF, and the Read Intensive SSDs come in both form factors. The form factor of the bays decides the rest: HPE’s LFF Drive Enclosure “accepts MSA dual-ported 12Gb SSD and/or SAS Midline hard drives”, and the SFF one “accepts MSA dual ported 12Gb SSD and/or Enterprise SAS hard drives”. The MSA 2062 is an SFF array, so its LFF drives go in the LFF enclosure.

Each HDD and SSD 6-pack bundle holds six of a listed single drive, and HPE’s note on each of those bundles names the single it contains (the 7.2TB SFF bundle R0Q65A, for example, “Contains 6 x MSA 1.2TB 12G SAS 10K SFF Enterprise HDDs (R0Q55A)”); the parts list below carries those notes. The self-encrypting HDD 6-packs have no single behind them: HPE sells the 2.4 TB and 12 TB self-encrypting drives “in 6 Pack bundles only”, and lists no single drive for the TAA-compliant bundles of the earlier editions either. And the three SFF SSD 6-packs are not an option for every array: HPE states they “may only be configured with MSA 2060 SFF Flash Bundle arrays models”.

Choosing the Right HPE MSA 2060 / 2062 Drives

  • Match the generation, not just the array. HPE states that “MSA Gen 6 HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with prior generation MSA Storage Systems” and that “Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems.” HPE names the prior generations as “MSA P2000 G3, MSA 1040/2040/2042 and MSA 1050/2050/2052”, so a drive from one of those arrays is not an MSA 2060 drive; check its part number against this list.
  • Mixing classes is allowed; mixing HDDs with SSDs usually needs a licence. “Customers can mix SSD, Enterprise SAS, and SAS Midline (MDL) drives in the same array configuration”, and “An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same configuration, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache”. “Configurations with all SSDs or with an SSD Read Cache extension do not require an ADS license on the MSA2060 array.” On the MSA 2062, “The MSA Advanced Data Services LTU comes standard on the MSA 2062 models.”
  • Self-encrypting drives only encrypt a whole array. “All drives within the MSA 2060 array must be self-encrypted drives to enable the encryption feature”. HPE adds that mixing SEDs and non-encrypting drives “is supported but not recommended”, that “Encryption is unavailable while both drive types are installed in the same system, even if allocated to a different pool”, and that non-encrypting drives added to a system with encryption enabled “will not be usable”. HPE states the SEDs are certified by NIST and the Canadian CSE “as meeting the Level 2 security requirements for cryptographic modules”. They are not an option on the Flash Bundle models, and a TAA-compliant MSA 2060 takes only SED drives when capacity is added.
  • Read Intensive is the only SSD endurance class HPE lists here. Every MSA 2060 SSD option is Read Intensive; HPE lists no Mixed Use or Write Intensive SSD for this array. The DWPD guide explains what the class means for write-heavy workloads.
  • Keep an MSA-DP+ disk group to one drive type. HPE’s MSA-DP+ description states that “All disks in an MSA-DP+ disk group must be the same type (enterprise SAS, for example), but can have different capacities, provided the range of difference does not exceed a factor of two”, and “HPE recommends not mixing disks if the ratio of the largest disk to the smallest disk is greater than two.” The SSD vs HDD guide covers the performance side of that choice.

HPE MSA 2060 / 2062 Drives FAQ

Do MSA 2050 drives fit the MSA 2060?
No. HPE names the MSA 1050/2050/2052 among the prior generations and states that "Prior Generation of MSA HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 Storage Systems"; in the other direction, "MSA Gen 6 HDDs and SSDs are not compatible with prior generation MSA Storage Systems". A drive listed on this page is an MSA 2060 option; check the part number of any other drive against this list before ordering it for an MSA 2060.

Can I mix HDDs and SSDs in one MSA 2060?
Yes, with a licence in most cases. HPE states that "Customers can mix SSD, Enterprise SAS, and SAS Midline (MDL) drives in the same array configuration" and that "An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same configuration, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache". The MSA 2062 includes that licence; the MSA 2060 does not.

Which MSA 2060 models take self-encrypting drives?
The standard MSA 2060 models, and the TAA-compliant MSA 2060, which takes only SED drives when capacity is added. HPE states that the MSA 2060 Flash Bundle models support all drive options "except SED/TAA compliant drives", and the MSA 2062 QuickSpecs lists no self-encrypting drive. To enable encryption, every drive in the array must be SED.

Are the MSA 2060 SSDs read intensive or mixed use?
Read Intensive. Every SSD HPE lists for the MSA 2060 - the SFF 960 GB, 1.92 TB, 3.84 TB and 7.68 TB, the LFF 1.92 TB and the FIPS-encrypted SED models up to 30.72 TB - is a 12G SAS Read Intensive drive. HPE lists no Mixed Use or Write Intensive SSD for this array.

Can I put LFF drives in an MSA 2062?
Yes, in a drive enclosure. HPE states that "Adding LFF HDD or SSD options to an MSA 2062 storage array requires the addition of an MSA 2060 LFF Drive Enclosure (R0Q39B)", because the MSA 2062 is a 24-bay SFF array. The LFF enclosure takes the Midline 7.2K HDDs and the LFF SSD; the SFF bays of the array take the Enterprise HDDs and the SFF SSDs.

Why do some drives here carry a note naming earlier HPE editions?
Because HPE listed them for the MSA 2060 in those editions. Each of these drives carries a note in the parts list naming the versions of HPE's MSA 2060 QuickSpecs (a00094629enw) that list it. They are the 900 GB 15K SFF HDD, the 6 TB, 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB Midline LFF HDDs, the 6-packs of the 900 GB, 10 TB, 14 TB and 18 TB drives, and the TAA-compliant self-encrypting SSDs and HDD 6-packs.

Which MSA 2060 drives are NEBS certified?
HPE certifies the 1.2 TB, 1.8 TB and 2.4 TB 10K SFF HDDs, their 6-packs, and the 960 GB, 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB SFF SSDs "for use in NEBS certified MSA Gen6 configurations". A NEBS configuration also takes the R0Q90A -48VDC power supply kit, which HPE lists as "Required for use in NEBS compliant MSA Gen6 configuration", on the 16Gb FC SFF or 12Gb SAS SFF array models HPE names.
