HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Parts

Every part on this page is one HPE lists for the HPE MSA 2070 and HPE MSA 2072 storage arrays, the MSA Gen7 generation: the compatible hard disk drives and solid state drives, the SFP transceivers the Fibre Channel and 10/25 GbE iSCSI models need, the drive enclosures that grow the array, the Mini-SAS cables, the DC power supply option and the bezel lock kit. Every part ships tested or factory sealed. The drives have their own page: HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Drives.

HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Specifications

  • Form factor: HPE lists the array as “2U, SFF or LFF”, with “12 drive bay LFF or 24 drive bay SFF 2U base arrays, depending on model”.
  • Controllers: two per array, a “Dual controller active/active (dual pool) design”. HPE notes that “The MSA Gen7 arrays do not support single controller configurations.”
  • Host connectivity: “4 host ports per controller, 8 host ports per array”, with 16 Gb and 32 Gb Fibre Channel, 10/25 GbE and 10GBase-T iSCSI, or 12 Gb SAS, depending on the array model.
  • What each array includes: “two MSA 2070 controllers, two redundant 580W AC power supplies, two 1.5m PDU cords (IEC C14), and one rack-mount kit”. HPE adds: “Transceivers are not included with the array and must be purchased separately.”
  • Drives: “Maximum total HDDs per array 240 SFF / 120 LFF (array + 9x drive enclosures)”, the same for SSDs; “Max raw capacity per array 7.37 PB (All SFF) / 2.88 PB (All LFF)”. The drives use “MSA Gen6/Gen7 drive carriers”.
  • Expansion: “0-9 enclosures” on a 12 Gb SAS expansion interface; HPE’s table lists “LFF/SFF array/enclosure mixing” as “Supported”.
  • Serviceability: “All MSA Gen7 Storage Array models support hot plug replacement of controllers, drives, fans, power supplies, and I/O modules”, and “Hot add expansion of drives and drive enclosures is also supported.”
  • Self-encrypting drives: “MSA 2070 and MSA 2070 TAA-compliant models only”; the MSA 2070 Flash Bundles and the MSA 2072 support “all HDD and SSD drive options excluding self-encrypting drive (SED) options”.

Budget for the transceivers and the licence before you order the array. HPE states that MSA Gen7 arrays “do not ship with SFPs” and that transceivers “must be purchased separately” — a 16 Gb or 32 Gb Fibre Channel model needs at least one 4-pack — and that mixing HDDs and SSDs in one configuration needs the Advanced Data Services licence unless the SSDs are used only as read cache.

What Is on This Page, and What Is Not

The parts below are the orderable hardware options from HPE’s MSA Gen7 QuickSpecs, grouped as HPE groups them: drives, SFP transceivers, drive enclosures, SAS cables, the DC power supply kit and the security option. Three things HPE lists are deliberately not here. The array models themselves (MSA 2070, TAA-compliant MSA 2070, MSA 2070 Flash Bundle, MSA 2072 and the Smart Choice arrays) are complete systems, not parts. The Smart Choice options are not listed separately: HPE states that “HPE MSA Smart Choice Arrays can be configured with either standard MSA Options or with options from the MSA Smart Choice Options menu”, and the standard options are the parts on this page. And the fibre, direct attach copper and active optical host cables are generic switch-side cabling that depends on the switch at the other end, so they are not carried as MSA parts; the SAS host cables are, because HPE lists them for one job each: the Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS HD cables “are used to connect the DL and ML ProLiant 12 Gb SAS Servers to MSA Gen7 SAS Storage system”, and the Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS cables “are used to connect the c-Class 6 Gb BladeSystem SAS switch to MSA Gen7 SAS Storage system”.

Choosing the Right HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Parts

  • Transceivers are a separate line. HPE: “MSA Gen7 Storage Systems do not ship with SFPs”; each Fibre Channel or 10/25 GbE iSCSI array “can be configured with either four or eight SFPs”, and a “Minimum of one SFP transceiver 4 pack is required for 16 Gb and 32 Gb Fibre Channel models”. The 10GBase-T iSCSI and 12 Gb SAS models “do not require SFP modules”, and the 10/25 GbE iSCSI models “can use Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables instead of SFPs”.
  • Drive enclosures come cabled for the short run. “Each drive enclosure includes a single rack-mount kit and two 0.5m MiniSAS HD to MiniSAS HD cables”; the 1.0m and 2.0m Mini-SAS HD to Mini-SAS HD cables are “For use when adding a drive enclosure and a longer cable is required.” Up to 9 enclosures attach to any MSA Gen7 array model, LFF and SFF mixed.
  • DC power is bought in pairs. “If DC power is desired, then two DC power supply options must be purchased for each array and drive enclosure”; each R0Q90A kit “includes one 764W -48VDC hot plug power supply unit and one 48VDC 2.3M power cord”. AC arrays and enclosures “ship standard with two redundant 580W AC power supplies”.
  • Mixing drive types needs a licence. “Customers can mix SSD, Enterprise SAS, and SAS Midline (MDL) drives in the same array configuration”, but “An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same configuration, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache”. The licence is a software part HPE sells; it is not listed here.
  • Self-encrypting drives are an all-or-nothing choice. “All drives within an MSA array must be self-encrypted drives to enable the encryption feature”, and “Mixing SED and non-encrypting drives within the same system is supported but not recommended.”

HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Parts FAQ

Which drives fit the HPE MSA 2070 and MSA 2072?
The 12G SAS HDDs and SSDs HPE lists for MSA Gen7, in SFF (2.5in) and LFF (3.5in) form factors, as single drives and 6-pack bundles, plus the self-encrypting (SED) options on the MSA 2070. HPE states these media options "are compatible with MSA Gen 6 and Gen7 Storage Systems only" and that "HDD and SSD media options available prior to MSA Gen6 are not compatible with MSA Gen 6 or Gen7 Storage Systems". The full list is on the HPE MSA 2070 / 2072 Drives page.

Does the MSA 2070 come with SFP transceivers?
No. HPE states that "MSA Gen7 Storage Systems do not ship with SFPs" and that transceivers "must be purchased separately". Each 16 Gb or 32 Gb Fibre Channel array needs at least one 4-pack, and a Fibre Channel or 10/25 GbE iSCSI array takes four or eight SFPs. HPE states that the 10GBase-T iSCSI and 12 Gb SAS models "do not require SFP modules".

How many drive enclosures can I add to an MSA 2070?
Up to 9. HPE states "Add up to 9 additional drive enclosures to any MSA Gen7 array model" and that attaching both LFF and SFF enclosures to one array is supported. That takes the array to 240 SFF or 120 LFF drives and a stated maximum raw capacity of 7.37 PB (all SFF) or 2.88 PB (all LFF).

Can I use self-encrypting drives in an MSA 2072 or a Flash Bundle?
No. HPE lists SED support for the "MSA 2070 and MSA 2070 TAA-compliant models only"; the MSA 2070 Flash Bundle and MSA 2072 Hybrid-Flash models support "all HDD and SSD drive options excluding self-encrypting drive (SED) options". On an MSA 2070, every drive in the array must be SED for encryption to be enabled.

Do I need a licence to mix HDDs and SSDs in an MSA 2070?
Usually, yes. HPE states that "An Advanced Data Services Suite License is required when mixing HDDs and SSDs within the same configuration, except when using SSDs exclusively as SSD Read Cache". The MSA 2072 ships with that licence; on the MSA 2070 it is an optional software part.

What does the MSA 2070 ship with?
HPE lists each array model as including the SFF or LFF chassis, "two MSA 2070 controllers, two redundant 580W AC power supplies, two 1.5m PDU cords (IEC C14), and one rack-mount kit". Transceivers "must be purchased separately"; drives and drive enclosures are not in that list of what the array includes.
