The HPE ProLiant SL230s Gen8 is a scalable-system node rather than a standalone rack server: a 1U half-width tray that slides into an HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, which supplies the power, the cooling and the shared management for up to eight trays in 4U. • Form factor: a 1U half-width tray; the s6500 chassis around it is 4U full-width and holds eight of them
• Processors: up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 series on the Intel C600 chipset, two to eight cores per socket, with 5MB to 20MB of level 3 cache
• Memory: 16 DDR3 DIMM slots per tray — four channels per processor, two DIMMs per channel — to 256GB registered or 128GB unbuffered
• Internal drives: four 2.5-inch SFF, four solid state, or two 3.5-inch LFF drives on quick release carriers inside the tray, plus up to two hot-plug SFF drives in the front bezel
• Maximum internal storage: 4.8TB on four 1.2TB quick release SAS SFF drives, or 8.0TB on two 4TB quick release LFF drives

Is the SL230s Gen8 a standalone server?
No. It is a 1U half-width tray that installs in an HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, and the chassis supplies power, cooling and shared systems management. Up to eight trays fit one 4U chassis.

How many SL230s Gen8 nodes fit in one chassis?
Eight, in 4U. HPE specifies a node blank kit for each half-width 1U space left unpopulated, so a partly filled chassis keeps its airflow.

Can SL230s Gen8 trays share a chassis with other SL nodes?
SL250s and SL230s trays can be intermixed in one s6500 chassis because they carry the same Carbondale firmware version. SL270s trays cannot be mixed with them, unless every server in the chassis uses Ivy Bridge processors.

Does the SL230s Gen8 have its own power supply?
No. Power comes from the Common Slot hot-plug supplies in the s6500 chassis and cooling from its eight fan bays, so neither is a tray-level part.

What processors does the SL230s Gen8 take?
Up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processors, from the two-core E5-2637 to eight-core parts such as the E5-2670. Mixing different processor models in one tray is not supported.

How much storage fits inside one SL230s Gen8 tray?
4.8TB on four 1.2TB quick release SAS SFF drives, or 8.0TB on two 4TB quick release LFF drives. The two hot-plug bays in the front bezel reach 2.4TB on 1.2TB SAS drives.
