HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8, new and refurbished, each complete with heatsink and fans. The tray takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processors, and HPE does not support mixing different processor models — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.
SL250s Gen8 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: two, on the Intel C600 chipset, upgradeable to two processors
- Families: Intel Xeon E5-2600 series from two cores to eight, with Intel Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost on the supporting models
- Entry kits stocked: the four-core E5-2609 at 2.4GHz and E5-2603 at 1.8GHz, 10MB of cache at 80W, both capped at 1066MHz memory
- Base kits stocked: the six-core E5-2640, E5-2630 and E5-2620 with 15MB of cache at 95W, and the 60W E5-2630L, all capped at 1333MHz memory
- Performance kits stocked: the eight-core E5-2670 and E5-2665 at 115W, the E5-2660 and E5-2650 at 95W and the 70W E5-2650L, all with 20MB of cache, plus the two-core 3.0GHz E5-2637, every one supporting 1600MHz memory
- Cache: 20MB of level 3 on eight-core parts, 15MB on six-core, 10MB on quad-core and 5MB on dual-core

Wattage is a chassis decision on this platform, not a tray decision. HPE requires the 1500W Common Slot Platinum Plus supply in the s6500 before a 115W processor such as the E5-2670 or E5-2665 is supported, and three of them before three accelerators are. Four trays share those supplies, so one node's choice sets the budget for the rest.

Power is a chassis question on this node, not a tray question. Four trays draw on the same Common Slot supplies, so the processor and accelerator choice made for one node sets the budget for every node beside it. HPE also asks for a minimum of 4GB of memory per processor once accelerators are installed, which makes the same upgrade a memory question as well.
Choosing the Right SL250s Gen8 Processor
- Both sockets must carry the same part. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so upgrading to two CPUs means two kits of the same model unless the fitted one is being replaced.
- 115W processors carry a chassis requirement. The 1500W Common Slot Platinum Plus supply has to be in the s6500 before an E5-2670 or E5-2665 is supported, and that is a chassis part rather than a tray part.
- The processor sets the memory ceiling. E5-2600 entry parts run DDR3 at up to 1066MHz, base parts at up to 1333MHz and performance parts at up to 1600MHz, whatever the DIMMs are rated at.
- A second processor unlocks eight more DIMM slots. With one CPU fitted only half the sixteen slots are available, which is often the real reason to add one.
- Two accelerator options want a newer processor. HPE supports the NVIDIA Tesla K40 and the Intel Xeon Phi 7120p on E5-2600 v2 processors only, so an E5-2600 tray is limited to the rest of the accelerator range.
