HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 Memory

HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 Memory

HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant SL250s Gen8, new and refurbished. Each tray carries 16 DIMM slots — eight per processor, across four channels of two — and HPE does not qualify memory from earlier ProLiant generations on this node, so DDR3 pulled from a G6 or G7 is not a substitute.

SL250s Gen8 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 HPE SmartMemory, Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM); Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed within one tray
  • Slots: 16 per tray, four memory channels per processor socket with two DIMMs each; DIMMs work only against an installed processor, so one CPU leaves half the slots unusable
  • Maximum per tray: 256GB registered on sixteen 16GB modules, or 128GB unbuffered on sixteen 8GB modules
  • Kits stocked: PC3L-10600R and PC3L-10600E at DDR3-1333, and PC3-12800R and PC3-12800E at DDR3-1600, in single-rank and dual-rank x4 and x8 forms from 2GB to 16GB
  • With accelerators fitted: HPE requires a minimum of 4GB of memory per processor once computational or graphics accelerators are installed
  • Protection and packaging: Advanced ECC multi-bit error protection, and every DDR3 option kit for this server is a single DIMM

Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced cannot share a tray, and the ceilings are far apart. Registered DIMMs reach 256GB across the sixteen slots and Unbuffered stop at 128GB, while the 512GB Load Reduced figure is a platform capability rather than a stocked part. Whichever technology is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match, because converting means replacing every module.

Which DDR3 kit fits an SL250s Gen8 tray?

KitRatingVoltageLargest size stockedMaximum per tray
Registered PC3L-10600RDDR3-13331.35V low voltage16GB dual rank x4256GB
Registered PC3-12800RDDR3-16001.5V standard16GB dual rank x4256GB
Unbuffered PC3L-10600EDDR3-13331.35V low voltage8GB dual rank x8128GB
Unbuffered PC3-12800EDDR3-16001.5V standard8GB dual rank x8128GB

Registered is the type to buy for capacity, and it is the only one stocked at 16GB. Low voltage and standard voltage Registered modules may be mixed in any order, though the tray then powers all of them at the higher voltage, so the saving goes the moment one 1.5V module does. Load Reduced DIMMs raise the platform ceiling to 512GB but are not stocked for this model, and they cannot share a tray with either type above.

Choosing the Right SL250s Gen8 Memory

  • Memory from an earlier ProLiant generation will not do. HPE does not qualify or warrant it on this node, and SmartMemory is what the Gen8 authentication and performance features depend on.
  • Filling both DIMMs per channel costs nothing in clock. HPE rates every stocked Registered and Unbuffered kit at the same frequency at one DIMM per channel and at two, so a full sixteen-slot tray holds its rated speed.
  • The processor sets the ceiling, not the module. E5-2600 entry parts run memory at up to 1066MHz and base parts at up to 1333MHz, whatever the DIMM is rated at.
  • The Xeon E5-2620 will not run DIMMs at 1.35V. Low-voltage PC3L modules still go in that tray, but the ROM-Based Setup Utility has to be set to operate them at 1.5V.
  • Load the heaviest DIMM furthest from the processor. HPE fills a channel from the most ranks to the fewest, and balancing total capacity across both processors is what keeps the two memory controllers even.

Memory speed is set by the processor as much as by the module — see the SL250s Gen8 processors before deciding on clock. SL250s Gen8 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in an SL250s Gen8?
256GB per tray using Registered DIMMs, or 128GB using Unbuffered. Both figures assume two processors: with one processor fitted, only eight of the sixteen slots are available.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in an SL250s Gen8?
No. Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced are distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within one server. Whatever is fitted today is what an upgrade must match.

How many memory slots does the SL250s Gen8 have?
Sixteen per tray. Each Xeon E5-2600 socket has four memory channels carrying two DIMMs each, for eight DIMMs per installed processor.

Can I mix low voltage and standard voltage DIMMs?
Registered DIMMs rated at 1.35V and 1.5V may be mixed in any order, but the server powers them all at the higher voltage. The Intel Xeon E5-2620 does not support 1.35V operation at all.

Does filling all sixteen slots slow the memory down?
No. HPE rates the stocked Registered and Unbuffered kits at the same speed at one DIMM per channel and at two, so a fully populated tray keeps its rated frequency.

Is there a memory minimum for running GPUs in this tray?
Yes. HPE requires at least 4GB of memory per installed processor once computational or graphics accelerators are fitted, so an accelerator build has a memory floor as well as a power one.
