DL365 Gen11 at a glance

Processors

One or two AMD EPYC processors, 4th Gen (model numbers 9xx4) or 5th Gen (9xx5). Two processors must be the same model, and all 24 DIMM slots and the EDSFF model need two.

Kits include no heat sink or fans. At 240W or less: the 1U Standard Heat Sink, with Standard fans for 8 SAS/SATA drives or Performance fans for 10 drives or any NVMe drive. Above 240W: the 1U Performance Heat Sink and Performance fans, or a DLC module.

At any wattage, the EDSFF model, a U.3 x4 drive cage and an InfiniBand NDR adapter need the Performance heat sink or DLC, and 128GB or 256GB DIMMs need the Performance heat sink. In the EDSFF model, a processor of 320W or more needs DLC.

HPE's thermal matrix limits air-cooled 400W processors to a 25°C ambient. Standard and performance heat sinks do not mix. DL365 Gen11 Processors

Memory

24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor, one per channel. DDR5-4800 kits for 4th Gen processors, DDR5-6400 for 5th Gen, 16GB to 256GB. Up to 6TB with 256GB DIMMs in all 24 slots and two processors, 3TB per processor.

128GB and 256GB kits need the Performance heat sink and 7 Performance fans; 256GB kits are limited to a 25°C ambient and to 16 in the EDSFF model or 20 in the GPU model, and to 12 with an InfiniBand NDR adapter unless DLC is fitted. x4 and x8 kits do not mix, nor do 3DS and non-3DS kits; the 96GB and 128GB 2Rx4 kits cannot be mixed with any other memory. Drives

Up to 10 SFF drives in the 8SFF model (8 plus 2 with the 2SFF backplane kit), 20 E3.S NVMe drives in the EDSFF model, or 8 E3.S or 4 SFF U.3 NVMe drives in the GPU model; no rear drive cages. With processors of 320W or more, at most 8 SFF or 12 EDSFF drives; with an InfiniBand NDR adapter, at most 6 SFF drives in the 8SFF model.

Without a tri-mode controller a cage cannot mix NVMe and SAS/SATA drives. The NS204i-u boot device needs 7 fans and the Low Profile Secondary Riser Kit; with 5th Gen processors HPE requires the NS204i-u v2. DL365 Gen11 Drives

Storage controllers

MR216i, MR408i and MR416i controllers, OCP and PCIe, and the SR932i-p, plus the Smart Array E208e-p for external drives.

MR and SR internal controllers do not mix, and MR controllers are not supported with Intelligent Provisioning. HPE supports no software RAID on this server. The OCP controllers take an OCP slot. DL365 Gen11 Storage Controllers

Networking

No embedded networking: networking comes from an OCP 3.0 or stand-up adapter. Two OCP 3.0 slots and a dedicated 1Gb iLO port.

Almost all PCIe network cards need 7 Performance fans. The BCM57504 4-port and Intel E810-CQDA2 OCP3 adapters need an OCP upgrade cable kit: the 1P kit with one processor, the 2P kit with two. Expansion

One PCIe 5.0 x16 slot on the primary riser and one in the secondary position, which needs the second processor and takes a full-height or a low-profile card; the GPU model adds two GPU riser slots. Riser cards

Cooling

Each fan kit holds one fan: 5 kits with one processor, 7 with two. Performance fans are required with NVMe or SAS4 drives, 10 SFF drives, the EDSFF and GPU models, any U.3 x4 drive cage, 128GB and 256GB DIMMs and almost all PCIe network cards; the NS204i-u needs 7 fans. Fan kits

Power

Before you order memory, check the processor generation. The last digit of the EPYC model number tells you: a 4 (EPYC 9124, 9354) is 4th Gen and takes DDR5-4800 kits; a 5 (EPYC 9555) is 5th Gen and takes DDR5-6400 kits. How much memory does the DL365 Gen11 support?

Up to 6TB with two processors: 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs in all 24 slots, DDR5-4800 on 4th Gen AMD EPYC or DDR5-6400 on 5th Gen; each processor takes up to 3TB in its 12 slots. 128GB and 256GB kits need the Performance heat sink and 7 Performance fans, and 256GB kits are limited to a 25°C ambient and to 16 in the EDSFF model or 20 in the GPU model. x4 and x8 kits do not mix, nor do 3DS and non-3DS kits, and the 96GB and 128GB 2Rx4 kits cannot be mixed with any other memory.

Which drives fit the DL365 Gen11?

2.5-inch SFF drives on HPE's Basic Carrier (BC) in SAS, SATA or U.3 NVMe, up to 10 in the 8SFF model; and E3.S EC1 NVMe drives, up to 20 in the EDSFF model or 8 in the GPU model. With processors of 320W or more the limits are 8 SFF or 12 E3.S drives. Without a tri-mode controller a drive cage cannot mix NVMe and SAS/SATA drives.

How do I tell which processor generation my DL365 Gen11 has?

Read the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. The last digit of the EPYC model number is the generation: a 4 (EPYC 9124, 9354) means 4th Gen, a 5 (EPYC 9555) means 5th Gen. It decides the memory kit, DDR5-4800 for 4th Gen and DDR5-6400 for 5th Gen, and with 5th Gen processors HPE requires the NS204i-u v2 boot device. Both processors must be the same model.

Is my server a DL365 Gen11 or a DL365 Gen10 Plus?

Check the processor model number. A 9 with a last digit of 4 or 5 (9xx4 or 9xx5, such as EPYC 9354 or 9555) means a DL365 Gen11, with DDR5 memory in 24 slots. A last digit of 3 or 2 (7xx3 or 7xx2, such as EPYC 7313) means a DL365 Gen10 Plus, with DDR4-3200 memory in 32 slots. Memory kits and processors differ between them, so buy those from the page for your generation.
