HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11 Storage Controllers

Genuine HPE storage controllers for the HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11, new and refurbished. The portfolio here is tri-mode — one family handling NVMe, SAS, and SATA — in PCIe plug-in and OCP (OROC) forms, with the NS204i-u as the dedicated boot device. Note that software RAID is not supported on AMD Gen11 servers.

DL365 Gen11 Storage Controller Specifications

  • MR416i-p / MR416i-o: x16 lanes with 8GB cache, supporting up to 16 SAS/SATA/NVMe drives
  • MR408i-o: x8 lanes with 4GB cache, supporting up to 8 SAS/SATA/NVMe drives
  • MR216i-p / MR216i-o: x16 lanes without cache, supporting up to 16 SAS/SATA/NVMe drives
  • SR932i-p: x32 lanes with 8GB wide cache, supporting up to 32 SAS/SATA/NVMe drives
  • Boot: NS204i-u Gen11, which does not occupy a PCIe slot, is externally accessible, includes 2 × 480GB NVMe SSDs, and supports RAID 1
  • Cache protection: the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor or the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery, each with a 260mm cable kit

Pick one controller family and stay in it. The QuickSpecs state that mixing MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) series internal controllers is not supported, and that software RAID is not supported on AMD Gen11 servers. MR series controllers also give up Intelligent Provisioning.

Which RAID controller does the DL365 Gen11 use?

The NVMe lane arithmetic is documented separately from those drive totals. The x16 MR216i and MR416i support only 4 x4 NVMe drives, or eight x2; the x8 MR408i-o only 2 x4, or four x2; and the x32 SR932i-p 8 x4, or 16 x2.

Choosing the Right DL365 Gen11 Storage Controller

  • Pick one family and stay in it: mixing MR (MegaRAID) and SR (SmartRAID) internal controllers is not supported, and the two use different RAID configuration tools.
  • MR controllers give up Intelligent Provisioning: the QuickSpecs state MR series controllers are not supported with that feature.
  • -p and -o is placement: the -p models take a PCIe slot, the -o models are OROC controllers taking an OCP slot — where they compete with your network adapters.
  • Order cache protection with a cached controller: the Hybrid Capacitor and the 96W Lithium-ion Battery each ship with a 260mm cable kit, the two cannot be selected together, and the 2P extension cable kit is required for either.
  • Plan the riser if you boot from NS204i-u: the low profile secondary riser kit P55029-B21 must be in the configuration, and 7 fans must be selected.

DL365 Gen11 Storage Controllers FAQ

Which RAID controllers are supported in the HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11?
The tri-mode Gen11 family: MR216i-p and MR216i-o (x16, no cache), MR408i-o (x8, 4GB cache), MR416i-p and MR416i-o (x16, 8GB cache), and the x32-lane SR932i-p with 8GB wide cache. The E208e-p SR Gen10 covers external 12G SAS.

Does the DL365 Gen11 support software RAID?
No. The QuickSpecs state plainly that software RAID is not supported on AMD Gen11 servers. Use a tri-mode MR or SR controller for arrays, and the NS204i-u boot device for a mirrored OS volume.

Can I mix MR and SR controllers in a DL365 Gen11?
No. The QuickSpecs state that mixing MR (MegaRAID) series and SR (SmartRAID) series internal controllers is not supported, and note that the two use different RAID configuration tools.

What is the difference between -p and -o controllers?
Mounting. The -p models are PCIe plug-in cards that take a PCIe slot; the -o models are OROC controllers that take an OCP slot. In this 1U chassis the OCP slots are also where network adapters go, so plan the layout before ordering.

Do DL365 Gen11 RAID controllers need a battery?
Cached controllers should be paired with cache protection - either the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor or the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery, each supplied with a 260mm cable kit. The two cannot be selected together, and the 2P 96W extension cable kit is required for either.

How does the NS204i-u boot device work in the DL365 Gen11?
It is a hot-plug NVMe boot optimized storage device that does not occupy a PCIe slot and is externally accessible. It includes embedded 2 x 480GB NVMe SSDs and supports RAID 1. If it is configured, the low profile secondary riser kit must be in the order.
