Choosing the Right DL365 Gen11 Drives
- Order fans with flash: performance fan kits are required when the drive is NVMe or SAS4, when 10 SFF SAS/SATA/NVMe is configured, and on EDSFF or GPU CTO servers. Any U.3 x4 drive cage also requires the performance heat sink or a DLC module.
- Tri-mode controller or no mixing: NVMe and SAS/SATA cannot share a drive cage unless a Tri-mode controller is selected for it.
- Match endurance to workload: Read Intensive for read-heavy serving, Mixed Use for write-heavy databases — the DWPD guide explains the classes. Never mix classes in one array.
- Know what Multi Vendor means: MV drives run right through this list — see HPE Multi Vendor SSDs. Keep the OS off the front bays: the NS204i-u boot device does not occupy a PCIe slot.

How many drives fit in a DL365 Gen11?
It depends on the chassis. The 8 SFF server takes 8 drives, or 10 with the optional 2 SFF U.3 Tri-mode drive cage. There is a 20 EDSFF drive bay chassis, and the GPU chassis carries 8 EDSFF or 4 SFF U.3 NVMe bays.
What is the maximum storage capacity of the DL365 Gen11?
The QuickSpecs maximum storage table lists 153.6TB from (8+2) x 15.36TB SFF NVMe PCIe U.3 SSDs, 76.8TB from (8+2) x 7.68TB SAS or SATA SSDs, and 24TB from (8+2) x 2.4TB SAS HDDs.
Does the DL365 Gen11 take U.2 drives?
The QuickSpecs state that U.2 backplanes are supported only as private options, that they do not support static drives - only dynamic U.3 drives - and that they do not support SAS or SATA drives at all.
Can I mix NVMe and SAS or SATA drives in the DL365 Gen11?
Not in the same drive cage unless a Tri-mode controller is selected for that cage - the QuickSpecs state the mixing rule in exactly those terms. The 4 SFF GPU drive cage supports NVMe drives only; SAS and SATA drives are not supported there.
What carrier do DL365 Gen11 drives use?
Every SFF drive listed for this server is a BC (Basic Carrier) drive, and EDSFF drives are E3.S EC1. Match the carrier when you source drives, because the carrier is what physically seats in the bay.
