HPE ProLiant BL660c Gen8 Parts

The HPE ProLiant BL660c Gen8 is the four-socket, full-height c-Class server blade of this generation, built on the Intel C600 chipset and carrying two or four Intel Xeon E5-4600 series processors across 32 DDR3 DIMM slots. It is not a standalone machine: it installs in an HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure, which supplies its power, cooling and network fabric. Every part below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships. Live pricing for each part number appears in the tables further down this page.

BL660c Gen8 Platform at a Glance

  • Form factor: single-wide, full-height c-Class server blade — it has no power supplies, fans or rails of its own
  • Enclosure: eight blades in an HPE BladeSystem c7000 and four in a c3000; HPE requires the c7000 to carry 10 fans and the c3000 to carry 6 for this blade
  • Processors: two or four Intel Xeon E5-4600 or E5-4600 v2 series — one and three processor configurations are not supported, and all must be identical
  • Memory: 32 DDR3 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels at two DIMMs per channel — taking HPE SmartMemory Registered DIMMs to 512GB or Load Reduced DIMMs to 1.0TB
  • Drive bays: two hot-plug small form factor SAS, SATA or solid state bays on the SmartDrive (SC) carrier
  • Storage controller: embedded HPE Smart Array P220i with 512MB flash backed write cache, RAID 0 and RAID 1, and up to 64 logical drives
  • Networking: two FlexibleLOM connectors taking one or two dual-port FlexibleLOMs, which must be identical; their ports go to interconnect module bays 1 and 2
  • Expansion: three PCIe 3.0 mezzanine slots — slot 1 is x8 Type A, slots 2 and 3 are x16 Type B
  • Management: embedded HPE iLO 4, plus internal MicroSDHC and USB 2.0 connectors
  • Also listed below: LPe1205A and QMH2572 8Gb Fibre Channel adapters, QDR and FDR InfiniBand 544M mezzanines, the D2200sb storage blade, a PCI expansion blade and LTO-4 and LTO-5 tape blades

This is the full-height, four-socket blade — size the enclosure before the parts. A c7000 holds eight BL660c Gen8 blades and a c3000 holds four, and HPE requires 10 fans in a c7000 and 6 in a c3000 to cool them. The blade brings four Xeon E5-4600 sockets, 32 DDR3 slots and two SFF SmartDrive bays; the enclosure brings the power, the cooling and the interconnect bays every network port lands in.

BL660c Gen8 Parts FAQ

What enclosure does the BL660c Gen8 need?
An HPE BladeSystem c7000 or c3000 enclosure. It is a full-height blade, so a c7000 holds eight of them and a c3000 holds four, and HPE requires the c7000 to be configured with 10 fans and the c3000 with 6 to cool it.

How many processors does a BL660c Gen8 take?
Two or four Intel Xeon E5-4600 or E5-4600 v2 series processors. One and three processor configurations are not supported, and all processors within the blade must be identical.

How much memory can a BL660c Gen8 take?
1.0TB, using thirty-two 32GB quad-rank Load Reduced DIMMs. Registered DIMMs reach 512GB with thirty-two 16GB modules, and the two technologies cannot be mixed in one blade.

How many hard drives fit in a BL660c Gen8?
Two. Four sockets and 32 DIMM slots do not buy extra bays - the blade has two hot-plug small form factor bays taking SAS, SATA or solid state drives.

Does the BL660c Gen8 have power supplies of its own?
No. Like every c-Class blade it draws power and cooling from the enclosure, which pools power across up to six hot-plug common slot supplies. There are no rails or fans on the blade either.

What is the difference between the BL660c Gen8 and the BL460c Gen8?
Scale. The BL660c Gen8 is full-height, with four sockets, 32 DIMM slots, three mezzanine slots and two FlexibleLOM connectors; the BL460c Gen8 is half-height with two sockets, 16 DIMM slots, two mezzanine slots and one FlexibleLOM. Both have two drive bays.
