DL385 Gen11 at a glance

Processors

One or two AMD EPYC processors of the same model, 4th Gen (model numbers 9xx4) or 5th Gen (9xx5).

Processor kits include no heat sink or fans; each fan kit holds one fan, six for two processors.

Up to 240W, the Standard Heat Sink Kit (P58458-B21) and Standard fans, in the 8LFF and 8SFF or 16SFF builds (other builds take the Performance kits at every wattage); 240W to 320W, the Performance Heat Sink Kit (P58459-B21) and Performance fans (P58465-B21); 320W and above, the Max Performance Heat Sink Kit (P58460-B21) with Performance fans. A processor above 300W rules out a mid cage. DL385 Gen11 Processors

Memory

24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor on 12 channels, one DIMM per channel; all 24 need two processors. DDR5-4800 kits for 4th Gen, DDR5-6400 for 5th Gen, 16GB to 256GB registered DIMMs. Up to 6TB with 256GB DIMMs in all 24 slots, 3TB per processor.

256GB DIMMs need six Performance fans. With 256GB DDR5-4800 DIMMs on 9004 processors, HPE's thermal table (25°C ambient) allows 8 at most in the GPU and 48SFF models, and above 290W 8 in most other chassis. Its rules do not apply to 256GB DDR5-6400 DIMMs on 9005 processors, which HPE supports at 30°C ambient.

LRDIMMs are not supported; x4 and x8 kits do not mix, nor do 3DS and non-3DS kits. DL385 Gen11 Memory

Drives

Up to 34 SFF drives (24 front, 8 mid-tray, 2 rear), or 48 SFF in the 48SFF model with tri-mode controllers; 20 LFF drives (12 front, 4 mid-tray, 4 rear) on the 8LFF model with 4LFF front, mid and rear cages, where the rear cage takes the space of all three risers; up to 36 E3.S NVMe drives in the 12EDSFF model, with no rear drives. All cages are Basic Carrier (BC).

NVMe needs a U.3 tri-mode backplane: the 8SFF SAS/SATA and 4LFF backplanes take SAS and SATA only. The NS204i-u v2 boot device (P78279-B21) works only with 5th Gen processors. DL385 Gen11 Drives

Storage controllers

No software RAID. Tri-mode MR216i, MR408i and MR416i controllers in OCP and PCIe versions, and the SR932i-p; the MR932i-p for EDSFF builds; the Smart Array E208e-p for external SAS, which version 49 of HPE's QuickSpecs lists as not supported with two 5th Gen (9005) processors.

MR and SR internal controllers do not mix, and the OCP versions take an OCP slot. DL385 Gen11 Storage Controllers

Networking

No embedded network ports: two OCP 3.0 slots, PCIe adapters and a dedicated 1GbE iLO port. DL385 Gen11 Networking Adapters

Expansion

Up to 8 PCIe 5.0 slots with two processors: up to 3 on the primary riser (one standard, two more with the upgrade riser kit), 3 on the secondary and 2 on the tertiary riser, which run from processor 2. Power

Before you order memory or a boot device, check the processor generation. The last digit of the EPYC 9000-series model number tells you: a 4 (EPYC 9124, 9354) is 4th Gen and takes DDR5-4800 kits; a 5 (EPYC 9555) is 5th Gen and takes DDR5-6400 kits. The NS204i-u v2 boot device (P78279-B21) works only with 5th Gen processors. An EPYC 7xx2 or 7xx3 processor means an earlier DL385, such as the Gen10 Plus or Gen10 Plus v2. Gen10 Plus, Gen10 Plus v2 or Gen11? How to tell

A 9xx4 or 9xx5 processor means a Gen11 and a 7xx3 processor a Gen10 Plus v2. The Gen10 Plus and the v2 share three 7xx2 models and their DDR4-3200 memory kits; with a 7xx2 processor, their SFF drive cages tell them apart: Smart Carrier on the Gen10 Plus, Basic Carrier on the v2. The Gen11 takes neither their processors nor their memory.

How much memory does the DL385 Gen11 support?

Up to 6TB with two processors: 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs in all 24 slots, up to 3TB per processor. A single processor can use only its 12 slots. 4th Gen EPYC 9004 processors take DDR5-4800 kits and 5th Gen EPYC 9005 processors take DDR5-6400 kits. 256GB DIMMs need six Performance fans. Which drives fit the DL385 Gen11?

2.5-inch SFF drives on HPE's Basic Carrier (BC) in SAS, SATA or U.3 NVMe; 3.5-inch LFF drives on the Low Profile (LP) carrier in SAS or SATA, plus LFF LPC SSDs; and E3.S EDSFF NVMe drives in the 12EDSFF and GPU models. NVMe needs a U.3 tri-mode backplane: the 8SFF SAS/SATA and 4LFF backplanes take SAS and SATA only.

How do I tell which processor generation my DL385 Gen11 has?

Read the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. The last digit of the model number is the generation: a 4 (EPYC 9124, 9354) means 4th Gen, a 5 (EPYC 9555) means 5th Gen. It decides the memory kit: DDR5-4800 for 4th Gen, DDR5-6400 for 5th Gen; and the NS204i-u v2 boot device works only with 5th Gen. Two processors must be the same model.

Is my server a DL385 Gen11, a Gen10 Plus v2 or a Gen10 Plus?

Check the processor model number. The Gen11 runs EPYC 9004 or 9005 processors (9xx4 or 9xx5, such as the 9124 or 9555) with DDR5 memory in 24 slots. The Gen10 Plus v2 runs EPYC 7003 processors (7xx3, such as the 7313), and the Gen10 Plus EPYC 7002 processors (7xx2, such as the 7302); HPE lists the 7252, 7302 and 7402 for the v2 too. Both take DDR4-3200 memory in 32 slots. With a 7xx2 processor, the SFF drive cages tell those two apart: Smart Carrier (SC) on the Gen10 Plus, Basic Carrier (BC) on the v2. Memory kits and processors differ between the Gen11 and those two, so buy those from the page for your generation.
