DL320e Gen8 at a glance

Processors

One Intel Xeon E3-1200 v2 processor (model numbers ending in v2, such as E3-1220v2 or E3-1240v2) or a Pentium G2120; earlier editions of HPE's QuickSpecs also listed the Core i3-3220T and i3-3240 and the Pentium G2100T.

Memory

4 DIMM slots on 2 channels, for HP DDR3 unbuffered ECC DIMMs (UDIMMs) from 2GB to 8GB, DDR3-1600 or DDR3-1333; no registered DIMMs and no non-ECC UDIMMs. HPE lists three low-voltage PC3L-10600E kits (647905-B21, 647907-B21, 647909-B21), but its memory rules for this server say there is no support for LV-DIMMs.

Up to 32GB with 8GB DIMMs in all 4 slots, at 1600MHz. Memory runs at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz, depending on the DIMMs and the processor. HPE recommends identical pairs, the farthest slot first. DL320e Gen8 Memory

Drives

8 SFF hot plug bays, or 4 LFF bays, hot plug or non-hot plug; the SFF and LFF models, and hot plug and non-hot plug LFF, cannot be converted into each other.

The embedded B120i runs SATA drives at 3.0Gb/s: a 6G SATA drive works on it at 3Gb/s and reaches 6Gb/s only on a Smart Array controller. SAS drives need a SAS controller such as the Smart Array P222.

4LFF hot plug drives, the P222 and the H222 need the DL320e Gen8 Mini SAS Cable Kit (685018-B21). SAS hard drives and SAS SSDs can share the server only as two separate RAID 0 volumes. DL320e Gen8 Drives

A 350W non-hot plug, non-redundant power supply as standard. The 460W Common Slot hot plug supplies on this list (Platinum Plus 656362-B21, Gold 503296-B21) are redundant supplies for a server that was built to order (CTO) with the DL320e Gen8 RPS Enablement FIO Kit (675451-B21), a factory option; Platinum Plus and Gold supplies do not mix in one server. DL320e Gen8 parts questions

How much memory does the DL320e Gen8 support?

Up to 32GB: 8GB DDR3 unbuffered ECC DIMMs in all 4 slots, running at 1600MHz. Registered DIMMs and non-ECC DIMMs are not supported. HPE lists three low-voltage PC3L-10600E kits (647905-B21, 647907-B21, 647909-B21), but its memory rules for this server say there is no support for LV-DIMMs. The memory runs at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz, depending on the DIMMs and the processor installed, and HPE recommends installing memory in identical pairs.

Which drives fit the DL320e Gen8?

SFF SC drives in the 8 SFF hot plug model and LFF SC drives in the 4 LFF hot plug model, in SAS or SATA, as hard drives or SSDs; for the 4 LFF non-hot plug model HPE lists non-hot plug LFF SATA drives. The embedded B120i runs SATA drives at 3.0Gb/s, so 6Gb/s needs a Smart Array controller, and SAS drives need a SAS controller such as the Smart Array P222; 4LFF hot plug drives need the Mini SAS Cable Kit (685018-B21).

Is my server a DL320e Gen8 or a DL320e Gen8 v2?

Check the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. A DL320e Gen8 runs a Xeon E3 whose model number ends in v2 (such as E3-1220v2) or a Pentium G2xxx (G2120, G2100T), and earlier editions of its QuickSpecs listed the Core i3-3220T and i3-3240; a DL320e Gen8 v2 runs a Xeon E3 ending in v3 (such as E3-1220v3), a Core i3-41xx or a Pentium G3xxx. The server's v2 is not the processor's v2. The drive bays differ too: 8 SFF or 4 LFF in the Gen8, 4 SFF or 2 LFF in the Gen8 v2.

Does DL320e Gen8 v2 memory fit the DL320e Gen8?

Partly. HPE lists the DDR3-1600 kits 669320-B21, 669322-B21 and 669324-B21 and the DDR3-1333 kits 647905-B21, 647907-B21 and 647909-B21 for both servers; the DDR3-1333 kits are low-voltage, and HPE's DL320e Gen8 memory rules say there is no support for LV-DIMMs. The Gen8 v2's low-voltage DDR3-1600 kits (713975-B21, 713977-B21, 713979-B21) are listed for the Gen8 v2 only.

These artifacts can include passwords, certificates and encryption keys. Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption (BitLocker) is a data protection feature available in Windows Server 2008. BitLocker leverages the enhanced security capabilities of a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 1.2.
