ProLiant DL Rack Server Parts

ProLiant DL Rack Server Parts

The ProLiant DL line is the rack-mounted half of the ProLiant range: a horizontal chassis measured in rack units, carried on rails in a 19-inch rack, with drives at the front and power at the back. This page routes you to the parts listing for a specific DL model, and every part on those pages is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships.

What Defines a DL Rack Server

  • Height in rack units: the U height is the constraint everything else follows from. A 1U chassis takes low-profile cards and short heatsinks, a 2U takes full-height cards and a deeper drive cage, and the 4U and larger chassis exist to carry multi-socket boards and the cooling they need.
  • Drives at the front: hot-plug bays across the front face, in small form factor (2.5-inch) or large form factor (3.5-inch) cages. The cage fitted to the chassis decides the carrier, and an SFF drive will not seat in an LFF carrier.
  • Power at the rear: hot-plug supplies in bays at the back, one for a single feed or two for redundancy. HPE expects both supplies in a server to share the same output rating and the same efficiency rating, so a mismatched pair is not a supported configuration.
  • Front-to-back airflow: hot-plug fan modules pull air from the cold aisle through to the hot aisle. Empty drive bays and empty slots need their blanks fitted, or the air takes the short path and the chassis runs hot.
  • Expansion through risers: PCIe cards sit in a riser cage rather than directly on the system board, so the riser fitted — not the slot count on the spec sheet — decides what card will physically go in.
  • Rails and rack depth: a DL needs a rail kit matched to the model and a rack deep enough to take it. Rail kits are model-specific and rarely carry across generations.
  • What the number means: it tracks size and position in the range, not age. DL20, DL120 and DL160 sit at the entry end, DL360 and DL380 are the mainstream 1U and 2U machines, and DL560, DL580 and DL980 are the larger multi-socket chassis.

Get the generation, not just the number, off the chassis label. The number tells you where a machine sits in the range; the generation tells you what will fit. Memory type, drive carrier, power supply form factor and riser design all change between DL generations, so a part out of a DL380 G7 is not a safe substitute in a DL380 Gen9 — and both have their own page below.

If the machine you are buying for is not a rack server, the shape tells you where to go instead: a floor-standing tower is in ProLiant ML Tower Server Parts, a blade that slides into an enclosure is in ProLiant BL Blade Server Parts, and a tray that shares a chassis with other trays is in ProLiant SL Scalable Server Parts or ProLiant XL Server Parts. Several nodes in one rack chassis are covered by ProLiant DL Multi Node Server Parts, and models that predate the DL naming are under HPE Retired Model Server Parts. Every family sits under HPE parts by server model.

ProLiant DL Rack Server Parts FAQ

What does the DL in ProLiant DL mean?
It is HPE's designation for the rack-mounted ProLiant line. A DL chassis is horizontal, sized in rack units and mounted on rails in a standard 19-inch rack, as against the ML towers and the BL blades.

How do I tell which DL model I have?
The model is printed on a pull-out tab or a label at the front of the chassis, and iLO reports it on the system information page. Note the generation as well as the number - a DL380 G6 and a DL380 Gen9 share almost no parts.

Do parts carry over between DL generations?
Rarely. Memory type, drive carrier, power supply form factor and riser design all change between generations, so a part out of a DL380 G7 is not a safe substitute in a DL380 Gen9. Order from the page for your exact model and generation.

Which DL models are 1U and which are 2U?
The DL360 line is the 1U machine and the DL380 line the 2U. The DL560, DL580 and DL980 take more rack units because they carry more sockets. Entry models vary, so check the page for the machine you own.

Can I move a drive from another server into a DL?
Only where the carrier matches. The drive cage decides the carrier type, so a 2.5-inch SFF drive will not seat in a 3.5-inch LFF carrier, and carrier designs change between generations as well.

Are parts listed for DL models HPE no longer builds?
Yes. Every DL generation in the list above has its own parts page, from the G1 machines through to Gen12. ProLiant models that predate the DL naming are grouped under HPE Retired Model Server Parts.
