DL340 Gen12 at a glance

Processor

One Intel Xeon 6 processor: E-core models end in E (up to 144 cores), P-core models in P. Single Socket (RICH I/O) models end in 1P (6511P to 6781P): the Front 4x GPU Enablement Kit and the Rear Captive Riser Kit need one, and the Front 2x GPU Enablement Kit does not work with one.

Heat sink: Standard up to 250W in an SFF model with up to two 8SFF kits or up to four 4EDSFF kits, Performance above 250W there, and Performance for every processor in an SFF model with three 8SFF kits or more than four 4EDSFF kits and in the LFF, Front GPU and NEBS builds.

HPE limits the 6725P to a 25°C ambient (no limit with the DLC heat sink), requires the Performance or DLC heat sink and Performance fans for it, and does not support it in the 8LFF, 12LFF, 24SFF, 36EDSFF or Front GPU builds; HPE says general compute use of the 6774P invalidates the warranty.

HPE's DL340 Gen12 QuickSpecs names the 6732P (P74578-B21) in its processor kit list but in none of its processor tables; HPE's DL380 Gen12 QuickSpecs says the 6732P “is supported only in dual-processor configurations”, and HPE calls the DL340 Gen12 a “2U 1P server”. DL340 Gen12 Processors

Memory

16 DIMM slots on 8 channels for HPE DDR5-6400 registered kits from 16GB to 256GB. Up to 4TB with 256GB kits in all 16 slots; every listed processor supports 4TB. 6400 MT/s with one DIMM per channel, 5200 MT/s with two; the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E run memory at 5600 MT/s.

HPE's population tables give 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 DIMMs, and also 12 with a P-core processor. The Performance fan kit is required with 9 or more DIMMs and with any 256GB DIMM. DL340 Gen12 Memory

Drives

SFF model: up to 24 SFF drives in three 8SFF drive cage kits of 8 drives each (x1 or x4 U.3 tri-mode, or x4 U.2 NVMe), or 36 E3.S NVMe drives with the EDSFF front cage; a 4EDSFF cage needs the Multipurpose Drive Cage Kit. With three 8SFF kits or more than four 4EDSFF kits the processor needs the Performance heat sink.

LFF model: up to 12 LFF drives in three 4LFF Backplane Kits (P75760-B21) of 4 drives each. HPE gives Box 3 with an 8SFF cage (SFF model) or a 4LFF cage (LFF model) as the default, so count the cages the server has before ordering more. Front GPU model: up to 8 SFF or 12 E3.S drives in its front cage.

HPE does not support the 6725P with 24 SFF, 36 E3.S, 8 LFF or 12 LFF drives. The NS204i-u v2 boot device needs the Boot Extension Enablement Kit (P71433-B21). DL340 Gen12 Drives

Optical drive

The SFF model takes an optical drive with the SFF Universal Media Bay Kit (P74749-B21), the LFF model with the LFF ODD/DisplayPort Enablement Kit (P74752-B21); both also need the Optical Disk Drive USB to SATA Signal Cable Kit (P72199-B21). Storage controllers

Intel VROC, NVMe only, or HPE MR Gen11 controllers: MR216i and MR416i in OCP and PCIe form, the MR408i-o, and the MR932i-p, which takes SAS and NVMe SSDs but no hard drives or SATA. Networking

No embedded network ports: the server needs an OCP 3.0 or PCIe adapter. Rear OCP A, optional rear OCP B, and two optional front OCP slots on the SFF and Front GPU models only, which need the Multipurpose Drive Cage Kit and that model's Front OCP Enablement Kits; a dedicated 1GbE iLO port.

Some adapters, such as the 400Gb InfiniBand NDR/Ethernet adapter, need the Performance fan kit. DL340 Gen12 Networking Adapters

Expansion

PCIe 5.0 x16 slot 3 on the optional primary riser (P71430-B21) and slot 6 on the optional secondary riser. In the SFF model, HPE enables slot 3 only with an 8SFF x4 DAC or 8SFF/EDSFF cable kit, the 36EDSFF x2 R1S DA Cable Kit or an internal controller.

Before you order, make sure the server is a DL340 Gen12, not a DL340e Gen12. Both run one Intel Xeon 6 processor and take DDR5-6400 memory in 16 slots, so the processor will not tell them apart. Measure the depth. An LFF server 80.65 cm (32.36 in) deep is a DL340e Gen12. HPE gives the DL340 Gen12 LFF model as 65.61 cm (25.83 in) deep, its SFF model as 63.95 cm (25.18 in) and its Front GPU model, which has no LFF bays, as 83.71 cm (32.96 in). The DL340 Gen12 also takes the 256GB kit (P73447-B21), up to 4TB, where the DL340e Gen12 stops at 128GB kits and 2TB. DL340 Gen12 parts questions

How much memory does the DL340 Gen12 support?

Up to 4TB: 256GB DDR5-6400 registered DIMMs in all 16 slots, and HPE says every listed processor supports 4TB. The kits are HPE DDR5-6400 registered DIMMs from 16GB to 256GB. Memory runs at 6400 MT/s with one DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s with two. HPE's population tables give 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 DIMMs, and also 12 with a P-core processor. With 9 or more DIMMs, or any 256GB DIMM, the server needs the Performance fan kit.

Which drives fit the DL340 Gen12?

2.5-inch SFF BC drives in SAS, SATA or U.3 NVMe; 3.5-inch LFF LP hard drives and LFF LPC SSDs in SAS or SATA in the LFF model; and E3.S EC1 NVMe drives in an EDSFF cage. Which interfaces work depends on the drive cage and the controller.

Which processor does my DL340 Gen12 have, and why does it matter?

Read the model in iLO under System Information › Processors. Every DL340 Gen12 processor is an Intel Xeon 6 whose model number ends in E (E-cores) or P (P-cores), with no Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum in the name, such as Xeon 6710E or 6520P. A model ending in 1P (6511P, 6521P, 6731P, 6741P, 6761P or 6781P) is a Single Socket (RICH I/O) processor: the Front 4x GPU Enablement Kit and the Rear Captive Riser Kit need one, and the Front 2x GPU Enablement Kit does not work with one. The processor's wattage and the model, SFF, LFF or Front GPU, decide whether it takes the Standard or the Performance heat sink.

Is my server a DL340 Gen12 or a DL340e Gen12?

Measure the depth. An LFF server 80.65 cm (32.36 in) deep is a DL340e Gen12. HPE gives the DL340 Gen12 LFF model as 65.61 cm (25.83 in) deep, its SFF model as 63.95 cm (25.18 in) and its Front GPU model, which has no LFF bays, as 83.71 cm (32.96 in). The DL340e Gen12 is a storage server for 16 or 24 LFF drives, with optional E3.S SSDs at the rear; the DL340 Gen12 takes up to 24 SFF, 36 E3.S or 12 LFF drives, or a front GPU cage. Both run one Intel Xeon 6 processor and take DDR5-6400 kits in 16 slots, but the DL340 Gen12 takes the 256GB kit (up to 4TB) and the DL340e Gen12 kits up to 128GB (up to 2TB). Drive cages, cables and heat sink rules differ, so buy those from the page for your server.
