HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Drives

HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. Nothing ships in the bays as standard, and the server comes as three different chassis — 8 SFF, 12 LFF and Front GPU — so the first question is not which drive but which form factor the box in front of you takes.

DL340 Gen12 Drive Specifications

  • Bays: the SFF chassis grows from one 8SFF cage to 24 SFF, or takes an EDSFF front cage for up to 36 EDSFF drives; the LFF chassis grows from a 4LFF backplane to 12 LFF; the Front GPU chassis takes an optional 8 SFF or 12 EDSFF cage
  • Carriers: SFF drives on the Basic Carrier (BC), LFF drives on the Low Profile (LP and LPC) carrier, EDSFF drives in the E3.S 1T EC1 form factor
  • SFF solid state: 24G SAS Read Intensive to 15.36TB and Mixed Use to 6.4TB, 12G Value SAS to 7.68TB, 6G SATA to 3.84TB, and NVMe Gen4 U.3 Read Intensive to 15.36TB and Mixed Use to 6.4TB
  • EDSFF solid state: NVMe Gen5 E3.S Read Intensive 1.92TB to 15.36TB and Mixed Use 1.6TB to 12.8TB, plus Gen4 Very Read Optimized 3.84TB to 15.36TB
  • Hard drives: 12G SAS 10K SFF from 300GB to 2.4TB; 7.2K LFF Business Critical in 12G SAS from 4TB to 26TB and 6G SATA from 1TB to 26TB, Helium and 512e at the larger capacities
  • Self-encrypting: SATA SFF SSDs, NVMe U.3 and E3.S SSDs with FIPS 140-3, and 10K SAS hard drives with FIPS 140-2
  • Documented maximums: 368.6TB of SAS SSD or 552.9TB of NVMe in the SFF and EDSFF chassis, 288TB in the LFF chassis (12 × 24TB), 184.3TB of NVMe in the GPU chassis
  • Cages: 8SFF x1 and x4 U.3 Tri-Mode cages for SAS, SATA and NVMe, an 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe cage, a 4EDSFF cage, a 4LFF backplane and 2SFF front enablement cages

Match the drive to the chassis, then to the controller. SFF drives on the Basic Carrier, LFF drives on the Low Profile carrier and E3.S EDSFF modules are three different formats and none fits another's bay. Then check the controller: HPE's support matrix has the MR200 and MR400 series running SATA and SAS hard drives and SATA, SAS and NVMe SSDs, but the MR932i-p supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only — no hard drives and no SATA SSDs — and Intel VROC software RAID does not support SATA at all.

Which DL340 Gen12 chassis takes which drives?

ChassisBaysDrives listedDocumented maximum
SFF CTO Server (P71452-B21)Up to 24 SFF, or up to 36 EDSFF with the front cageU.3 NVMe, 24G SAS, Value SAS and SATA SSDs, 10K SAS HDDs; E3.S NVMe in the EDSFF cage368.6TB SAS SSD, 552.9TB NVMe
LFF CTO Server (P75727-B21)Up to 12 LFF7.2K SAS and SATA hard drives, LFF Value SAS and SATA SSDs288TB (12 × 24TB)
Front GPU CTO Server (P75728-B21)Optional 8 SFF or 12 EDSFF in Box 2SFF SAS and SATA SSDs or E3.S NVMe122.8TB SAS SSD, 184.3TB NVMe

The chassis decides the carrier and the cage decides the interface: a U.3 Tri-Mode cage accepts SAS, SATA and NVMe drives, while the 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe cage is NVMe only. HPE's maximum-storage table stops at 24TB per LFF drive even though 26TB SAS and SATA drives are listed as options.

Choosing the Right DL340 Gen12 Drive

  • Match the carrier to the chassis. SFF drives on the Basic Carrier, LFF drives on the Low Profile carrier and E3.S EDSFF drives are three different physical formats; none goes in another's bay.
  • Check the controller before buying hard drives or SATA. HPE's support matrix shows the MR200 and MR400 series handling SATA and SAS HDDs and SATA, SAS and NVMe SSDs, but the MR900 series (MR932i-p) supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only — no hard drives and no SATA SSDs. Intel VROC software RAID does not support SATA drives at all.
  • Pick endurance by workload. Read Intensive, Mixed Use and Very Read Optimized are three different endurance classes on this list; match the class to the write load before comparing capacities.

DL340 Gen12 Drives FAQ

How many drives does a DL340 Gen12 hold?
Up to 24 SFF drives in the SFF chassis, or up to 36 EDSFF drives with the EDSFF front cage; up to 12 LFF drives in the LFF chassis; and an optional 8 SFF or 12 EDSFF cage in the Front GPU chassis. No drives ship as standard.

Does the DL340 Gen12 support NVMe drives?
Yes, in two form factors. SFF U.3 NVMe Gen4 SSDs go in the 8SFF U.3 Tri-Mode or x4 U.2 NVMe cages, and E3.S NVMe Gen5 SSDs go in the EDSFF cages. HPE's documented maximum is 552.9TB of NVMe in the SFF chassis with 36 EDSFF drives.

Which drive carrier does the DL340 Gen12 use?
SFF drives use the Basic Carrier (BC), LFF drives use the Low Profile carrier (LP, or LPC on the LFF SSDs), and EDSFF drives are E3.S 1T EC1 modules. The three are not interchangeable.

What is the largest hard drive for the DL340 Gen12?
26TB, in both 12G SAS and 6G SATA, as 7.2K LFF Business Critical Helium 512e drives for the LFF chassis. HPE's maximum-storage table is written around 24TB drives (12 x 24TB = 288TB), so treat the 26TB parts as a listed option beyond that table.

Can I run hard drives on the MR932i-p controller?
No. HPE's support matrix lists the MR900 series as supporting SAS and NVMe SSDs only - not SATA or SAS hard drives and not SATA SSDs. Hard drives and SATA SSDs need an MR200 or MR400 series controller.

What does 512e mean on the LFF drives?
The drive uses 4K physical sectors but presents 512-byte logical sectors to the host. The 8TB and larger LFF hard drives here are 512e, the 12TB and larger ones are Helium-filled, and the 16TB and larger ones are also ISE parts.
