HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Storage Controllers
Genuine HPE storage controllers for the HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12, new and refurbished. The server has no hardware RAID built in: HPE offers a choice of MR controllers or Intel VROC software RAID, and the MR cards come in two shapes — an OCP 3.0 module that takes an OCP slot and a PCIe plug-in card that takes a riser slot — which is the first thing to settle on a server whose networking also wants those slots.
DL340 Gen12 Storage Controller Specifications
- HPE MR216i-o and MR216i-p Gen11: x16 lanes, no cache, OCP and PCIe plug-in respectively, each supporting up to 16 SAS, SATA or NVMe drives
- HPE MR408i-o Gen11: x8 lanes, 4GB cache, OCP, up to 8 SAS, SATA or NVMe drives; requires the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery or the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor
- HPE MR416i-o and MR416i-p Gen11: x16 lanes, 8GB cache, OCP and PCIe plug-in, up to 16 SAS, SATA or NVMe drives; the same battery or capacitor is required
- HPE MR932i-p: x32 lanes, PCIe Gen5 plug-in, up to 32 SAS or NVMe drives, with an onboard battery
- HPE Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10: 8 external 12G SAS lanes, no cache, PCIe plug-in, for storage outside the chassis
- Drive support: the MR200 and MR400 series support SATA and SAS hard drives and SATA, SAS and NVMe SSDs; the MR900 series supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only
- Cache protection: HPE 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery with 145mm cable (P01366-B21) or Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor with 145mm cable (P02377-B21) — one or the other, never both
- Software RAID: Intel VROC for HPE in RAID 1 or Premium (RAID 0, 1, 5, 10) editions, up to 32 NVMe drives depending on processor, no SATA support
Cache needs protection, and the MR932i-p does not do hard drives. The MR408i-o and both MR416i controllers require the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery or the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor — one or the other, never both — while the MR216i cards have no cache and the MR932i-p carries an onboard battery. And for all its 32 drives and PCIe Gen5 lanes, HPE lists the MR932i-p as supporting SAS and NVMe SSDs only, so a chassis of 7.2K LFF drives or SATA SSDs needs an MR200 or MR400 series controller.
Which DL340 Gen12 controller do you need?
| Controller | Form | Lanes / cache | Drives | Cache protection |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MR216i-o / MR216i-p Gen11 | OCP / PCIe | x16, no cache | Up to 16 SAS, SATA, NVMe | None needed |
| MR408i-o Gen11 | OCP | x8, 4GB | Up to 8 SAS, SATA, NVMe | Battery or hybrid capacitor |
| MR416i-o / MR416i-p Gen11 | OCP / PCIe | x16, 8GB | Up to 16 SAS, SATA, NVMe | Battery or hybrid capacitor |
| MR932i-p | PCIe Gen5 | x32 | Up to 32 SAS SSD and NVMe only | Onboard battery |
| Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 | PCIe | 8 external, no cache | External 12G SAS | None needed |
Two rules cover most of the decision. Anything with a cache needs the battery or the hybrid capacitor on the order, unless it is the MR932i-p, which carries its own. And the MR932i-p will not run a hard drive or a SATA SSD — a 12 LFF chassis of 7.2K drives belongs on an MR200 or MR400 series controller.
Choosing the Right DL340 Gen12 Storage Controller
- OCP or PCIe is a slot decision. The -o controllers take an OCP 3.0 slot that a network adapter may also want; the -p controllers take a riser slot. HPE's configuration table lists the OCP 3.0 slot as not supported on the LFF chassis, which points LFF builds at the plug-in cards.
- Count drives. 8 on the MR408i-o, 16 on the MR216i and MR416i, 32 SAS or NVMe SSDs on the MR932i-p.
- Buy the cable kit for your chassis. Every cage is wired with a chassis-specific internal cable kit — SFF, LFF and Front GPU each have their own list — and in the SFF chassis the primary riser in slot 3 is only enabled with certain cable kits or an internal controller.
- Boot from the NS204i-u v2. The hot-plug boot device carries two NVMe SSDs in a preconfigured RAID 1 and needs the Boot Extension Enablement Kit; it keeps the data controller for data.

DL340 Gen12 Storage Controllers FAQ
Which RAID controllers does the DL340 Gen12 support?
The HPE MR216i-o and MR216i-p Gen11 (x16, no cache), MR408i-o Gen11 (x8, 4GB cache), MR416i-o and MR416i-p Gen11 (x16, 8GB cache) and the MR932i-p (x32, PCIe Gen5), plus the Smart Array E208e-p SR Gen10 for external SAS. Intel VROC software RAID is the alternative for NVMe.
Does the DL340 Gen12 have an embedded RAID controller?
No. HPE lists the storage controller as a choice of optional MR controllers or Intel VROC software RAID, so a hardware RAID build needs one of the MR cards added.
Do I need a battery with the controller?
With the MR408i-o and the MR416i-o and MR416i-p, yes: HPE requires either the 96W Smart Storage Lithium-ion Battery (P01366-B21) or the Smart Storage Hybrid Capacitor (P02377-B21), and not both. The MR216i controllers have no cache to protect, and the MR932i-p has an onboard battery.
Can the MR932i-p run SATA drives or hard drives?
No. HPE's support matrix lists the MR900 series as supporting SAS SSDs and NVMe SSDs only. SATA SSDs and SAS or SATA hard drives need an MR200 or MR400 series controller.
What is the difference between the -o and -p controllers?
The form factor. -o controllers are OCP 3.0 modules that fit an OCP slot; -p controllers are PCIe plug-in cards that fit a riser slot. The MR216i and MR416i are offered both ways with the same lanes, cache and drive count.
How does the DL340 Gen12 boot?
From the HPE NS204i-u v2 hot-plug boot device, listed in 480GB, 960GB and 960GB SED versions. It includes two NVMe SSDs with RAID 1 preconfigured, no further RAID can be applied to it, and it requires the NS204i-u Boot Extension Enablement Kit.
