HPE Server SSDs

SAS · SATA · NVMeSFF · LFF · E3.S · M.2

HPE server SSDs come in four drive sizes, 2.5-inch SFF, 3.5-inch LFF, E3.S and M.2, and as PCIe add-in cards, with a SAS, SATA or NVMe connection, and each sits on a carrier that has to match your server. Most Gen8 to Gen10 ProLiant servers take Smart Carrier (SC) drives in their 2.5-inch bays. Most Gen10 Plus servers and the Gen11 and Gen12 servers take Basic Carrier (BC) drives there, and the EDSFF models of Gen11, Gen12 and Gen13 take E3.S drives on the EC1 carrier. Every SSD we sell ships tested or factory sealed.

How to choose an HPE SSD

Rule 1

Match the carrier, not only the size

A 2.5-inch drive on a Smart Carrier (SC) does not fit a bay built for the Basic Carrier (BC), and the reverse. The carrier is in the drive's name: SC, BC, SCN, SCC, LPC or EC1.

Rule 2

The bay's connection sets the interface

A Smart Array or tri-mode controller runs SAS and SATA drives; the embedded SATA controller runs SATA only. NVMe drives need an NVMe cage, or U.3 bays behind a tri-mode controller.

Rule 3

Pick the endurance class for the work

HPE rates its SSDs Very Read Optimized, Read Intensive or Mixed Use by drive writes per day (DWPD), which HPE defines as “the maximum number of 4K host writes to the entire drive capacity of the SSD per day over a five-year period”. In the HPE SSD QuickSpecs, version 78, Read Intensive drives are rated 0.7 to 1.5 DWPD and Mixed Use drives 3 to 5 DWPD; Very Read Optimized drives are rated 0.3 to 0.57 DWPD. Write Intensive is an earlier HPE class; each of those product pages shows its own rating.

HPE server SSD questions

Which HPE SSD fits my server?

It depends on the bay: its size and carrier, and the controller or cage behind it. Most Gen8 to Gen10 ProLiant servers take Smart Carrier (SC) drives; most Gen10 Plus servers and the Gen11 and Gen12 servers take Basic Carrier (BC) drives. Each server's drives page lists the drives HPE lists for that model; find yours in the index below.

Will an SSD from a Gen10 server fit a Gen11 server?

Only a Basic Carrier (BC) drive. Most Gen10 servers use Smart Carrier (SC) drives, and Gen11 SFF bays take BC drives. Check that the part number is on your Gen11 server's drives page.

What is the difference between U.2 and U.3 NVMe SSDs?

Both are 2.5-inch NVMe drives. Most HPE U.2 drives sit on the Smart Carrier NVMe (SCN), for the NVMe bays of Gen9 and Gen10 servers. Most U.3 drives sit on the Basic Carrier (BC), from Gen10 Plus, where a tri-mode controller runs SAS, SATA and U.3 NVMe drives in the same bays. Our guide U.2 vs U.3 SSD has the detail.

What is Value SAS?

Value SAS is HPE's single-port SAS SSD class. In HPE's words, “HPE single-port Value SAS SSDs offer a significant performance boost over SATA SSDs with roughly twice the IOPS and are typically lower in cost than traditional SAS SSD drives”. A Value SAS drive has one SAS port, so it is not for dual-path configurations, and HPE does not mix Value SAS and full-performance SAS drives in one array. It looks the same as an enterprise SAS drive; the words Value SAS in the name tell them apart. Our guide Value SAS vs SAS SSD explains when it is the better buy; the SFF Value SAS and LFF Value SAS pages list ours.

Read Intensive, Mixed Use or Write Intensive?

They are HPE's endurance classes, set by drive writes per day (DWPD): in HPE's words, “the maximum number of 4K host writes to the entire drive capacity of the SSD per day over a five-year period”. In the HPE SSD QuickSpecs, version 78, Read Intensive drives are rated 0.7 to 1.5 DWPD and Mixed Use drives 3 to 5 DWPD; Very Read Optimized drives are rated 0.3 to 0.57 DWPD. Write Intensive is an earlier class that the QuickSpecs no longer lists; each of those product pages shows its own rating. Read Intensive suits work that mostly reads, such as web serving and boot; Mixed Use suits databases, analytics and virtualization.

Do refurbished SSDs have a warranty?

Yes. Every SSD carries a replacement warranty of 1 to 3 years, depending on the drive, and every drive ships tested or factory sealed. Each product page shows its warranty.

What if the SSD I need is out of stock?

Out of stock today does not mean unavailable: we can often source this part. Add it to a quote request and we reply with current pricing and availability. Every message, quotes included, is answered within 24 hours.
