Two of the drive cages can never be added later. HPE documents the 8SFF x4 U.3 cage and the 12 EDSFF cage as factory-integrated options that do not allow field upgrade, and each one removes the default cage and rules out every other cage. The 8SFF x1 Tri-Mode and 4LFF Basic cages are the ones a server already in service can grow into, to 24 SFF bays or 12 LFF.

Twenty-four SFF flash bays beat twelve LFF hard drives on capacity as well as spindle count, so LFF earns its place on cost per terabyte. Read those ceilings as platform figures rather than as the listing, though — 312TB assumes 26TB drives, and the LFF drives listed here run to 20TB.
Choosing the Right ML350 Gen11 Drive
- Confirm SFF or LFF first. A 2.5-inch BC carrier will not seat in a 3.5-inch LFF bay, and no adapter makes it do so.
- Two of the cages are not field upgrades. HPE documents the 8SFF x4 U.3 and 12 EDSFF cages as factory-integrated only; each replaces the default cage and cannot be fitted to a server in service.
- Match the drive to the controller path. Tri-mode MR and SR controllers carry SAS, SATA and NVMe together; the embedded Intel VROC SATA path handles SATA only.
- Keep the boot device off the front bays. The NS204i-u mirrors the operating system across two M.2 modules, but needs the Second CPU Fan Kit and the NS204i-u Enablement Kit with it.
