HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen10 Drives
Genuine HPE hot-plug hard drives and solid state drives for the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen10, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. The chassis decides everything: this server was built either as 8 SFF, with optional support for two more bays for ten in total, or as 4 LFF, and no drive ships with it as standard.
DL160 Gen10 Drive Specifications
- Chassis types: 8 SFF SAS/SATA with optional support for two more SFF bays, or 4 LFF SAS/SATA
- Interfaces: 12G SAS and 6G SATA hot-plug drives, in Mission Critical 10K and 15K, Business Critical 7.2K midline, and Read Intensive and Mixed Use solid state families
- Carriers: SFF drives arrive in SC hot-plug carriers and LFF drives in LP carriers, and the two are not interchangeable
- Solid state ceiling by chassis: LFF solid state stops at 6.4TB on four 1.6TB SAS drives, where the same chassis reaches 30.72TB on SATA parts
- Internal M.2: the HPE Universal SATA 6G AIC HHHL M.2 SSD Enablement Kit takes up to two identical M.2 2280 cards and occupies a PCIe slot
- Controller path: the embedded S100i software RAID drives SATA only; SAS drives require a Smart Array E208 or P408 controller
Check the controller before you buy a SAS drive. The embedded HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID gives this server 14 SATA ports and no SAS path at all, so a SAS drive needs a Smart Array E208 or P408 controller fitted first. The chassis is the other half of the answer: 8 SFF, ten with the optional extra pair, or 4 LFF, and an SFF drive will not seat in an LFF bay.
Which Drives Will Your DL160 Gen10 Chassis Take?
| Front end | Bays | Largest hard drive fill | Largest solid state fill |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 SFF chassis | 8, or 10 with the optional extra pair | 24TB on 2.4TB 12G SAS | 76.8TB on 7.68TB SAS or SATA |
| 4 LFF chassis | 4 | 48TB on 12TB SAS or SATA | 30.72TB on 7.68TB SATA |
| Internal M.2 | up to 2 cards on the enablement kit | Not applicable | 480GB per 2280 card |
The four-bay LFF chassis holds more terabytes and fewer spindles; the eight or ten bay SFF chassis reverses both, and it is the only one of the two that reaches 76.8TB of solid state capacity. Check the front of the machine before ordering, because an SFF drive will not seat in an LFF bay and no carrier swap makes it do so.
Choosing the Right DL160 Gen10 Drive
- Confirm SFF or LFF first. It is the one mistake on this page that cannot be worked around, and a glance at the front panel answers it.
- Check the controller before buying SAS. A server running the embedded S100i software RAID has 14 SATA ports and no SAS path, so a SAS drive needs a Smart Array card fitted first.
- Read Intensive and Mixed Use are endurance grades, not speed grades. Read Intensive suits boot volumes and read-heavy datasets; Mixed Use carries the write endurance for logging, databases and virtualisation.
- Value SAS is its own class. Several solid state drives here are Value SAS parts, which sit between SATA and mainstream SAS rather than being a cheaper mainstream SAS drive.
- Most of these drives are Multi Vendor parts. HPE qualifies more than one supplier behind a single part number, so the part number rather than the physical drive inside is the specification.

DL160 Gen10 Drives FAQ
How many drives does a DL160 Gen10 hold?
Eight in the 8 SFF chassis, or ten where the optional support for two more SFF bays is fitted. The 4 LFF chassis holds four.
Does the DL160 Gen10 use 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives?
Either, depending on how the chassis was built. HPE offered it as an 8 SFF chassis or a 4 LFF chassis, and the two front ends are not interchangeable.
What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL160 Gen10?
48TB on four 12TB LFF hard drives, or 76.8TB on ten 7.68TB SFF solid state drives. The SFF chassis reaches 24TB on ten 2.4TB SAS hard drives.
Can I put SAS drives in a DL160 Gen10?
Yes, but only through a Smart Array controller. The embedded S100i software RAID provides 14 SATA ports and no SAS support, so a SAS array needs an E208 or P408 card.
Do any hard drives ship with the server?
No. HPE documents no hard drives as standard on this platform, and factory-integrated models ship with blanks in the bays that were not ordered with drives.
Can a DL160 Gen10 boot from M.2?
Yes, through the HPE Universal SATA 6G AIC HHHL M.2 SSD Enablement Kit. It occupies a PCIe slot and supports up to two of the same M.2 2280 cards.
