HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12 Drives
Genuine HPE drives for the HPE ProLiant DL340e Gen12, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. This is a storage server first: up to 24 hot-plug 3.5-inch LFF bays in the front, all SAS or SATA, and an optional rear cage of E3.S NVMe SSDs. Nothing ships in those bays as standard.
DL340e Gen12 Drive Specifications
- Front bays: 24 LFF or 16 LFF SAS/SATA, set by the factory-installed front cage kit; HPE quotes 624TB with 24 × 26TB SAS or SATA HDDs
- Rear bays: with the Rear EDSFF 4x PCIe Enablement Kit, 8 E3.S 1T NVMe bays plus 2 dedicated E3.S boot bays (Box 7); HPE quotes 491.52TB for the eight
- Hard drives listed: Business Critical 7.2K LFF Low Profile Multi Vendor HDDs — SAS 12G from 4TB to 26TB, SATA 6G from 1TB to 26TB; 512e from 8TB, helium from 12TB, ISE from 16TB
- LFF SSDs listed: 960GB SAS 12G Mixed Use Value SAS and 960GB SATA 6G Read Intensive, both Multi Vendor on the LFF LPC carrier
- E3.S NVMe listed: Gen5 Read Intensive 1.92TB to 15.36TB and Mixed Use 1.6TB to 12.8TB in Mainstream and High Performance models, Gen4 Very Read Optimized to 15.36TB, and self-encrypting and FIPS 140-3 versions
- Controllers: MR216i-p or MR416i-p Gen11 for SAS, SATA and NVMe, up to 16 drives each; Intel VROC for NVMe only, SATA not supported
No 2.5-inch drive is listed for this server. The 24 front bays take 3.5-inch LFF SAS or SATA drives on Low Profile carriers and the optional rear cage takes E3.S EDSFF NVMe only, so an SFF drive from another ProLiant has nowhere to go. Buy the bay's form factor first, then the interface, and remember each MR controller reaches at most 16 drives.
Which DL340e Gen12 bays take which drive?
| Bay | Form factor and carrier | Interfaces | Attaches to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front, up to 24 | 3.5-inch LFF, Low Profile (LP / LPC) carrier | 12G SAS or 6G SATA | MR216i-p or MR416i-p, up to 16 drives per controller |
| Rear, 8 (EDSFF kit) | E3.S 1T EDSFF, EC1 carrier | NVMe Gen5 (Gen4 P5430 also listed) | Processor direct at x4 (Rich I/O CPU) or x2, or an MR controller via the Controller Cable Kit |
| Rear, 2 boot (Box 7) | E3.S 1T EDSFF | NVMe | An additional MR216i-p; unavailable when the NS204i-u is fitted |
Read this as two separate purchases. The front is a spinning-disk chassis — two of the 63 listed drives are LFF SSDs, every other 3.5-inch part is a 7.2K hard drive — and the rear cage is where the NVMe lives. The E3.S bays are EDSFF, not 2.5-inch, and no SFF drive is listed for this server. The rear cage also costs you the six-slot PCIe rear: the two rear kits are either/or.
Choosing the Right DL340e Gen12 Drive
- Buy the carrier with the drive. Front drives are HPE LFF Low Profile (LP, LPC) parts and E3.S drives are EC1-carrier parts; the part numbers here include the carrier for the bay.
- SAS or SATA is not a capacity decision. Both reach 26TB in the same 7.2K Business Critical family; 12G SAS suits an MR controller carrying many drives, 6G SATA costs less per bay.
- Count controllers before filling 24 bays. Each MR controller supports up to 16 drives, so a full front needs two — HPE's own maximum-weight configuration carries two MR PCIe controllers.
- Pick NVMe by endurance class. Read Intensive for capacity, Mixed Use for heavier writes, Very Read Optimized for archive tiers; SED and FIPS 140-3 versions cover encrypted-at-rest requirements.
- Rich I/O processors unlock x4 NVMe. The x4 direct-attach rear cable is listed only with the Single Socket Rich I/O processors; others use the x2 cable or route the bays through a controller.

DL340e Gen12 Drives FAQ
How many drives does the DL340e Gen12 hold?
Up to 24 LFF SAS or SATA drives in the front, or 16 with the 16LFF cage kit. The optional Rear EDSFF 4x PCIe Enablement Kit adds up to ten E3.S NVMe bays - eight general plus two dedicated boot bays - for a documented maximum of 624TB in front and 491.52TB in the rear.
Does the DL340e Gen12 take 2.5-inch SFF drives?
No SFF drive is listed for this server. The front bays are 3.5-inch LFF on Low Profile carriers and the rear bays are E3.S EDSFF, so a 2.5-inch drive from another ProLiant has no bay to go in.
What is the largest drive for the DL340e Gen12?
26TB, in both SAS 12G and SATA 6G Business Critical 7.2K LFF versions, for 624TB across 24 bays. The largest E3.S NVMe SSD in the option list is 15.36TB; HPE's 491.52TB rear figure assumes 61.44TB drives that are not in this document's option list.
Can I mix SAS and SATA drives in a DL340e Gen12?
The MR216i-p and MR416i-p support SATA and SAS hard drives and SATA, SAS and NVMe SSDs, so both interfaces can live in the same chassis. Keep one interface and one drive type per RAID array; mixing inside an array is where trouble starts.
Do the rear E3.S drives need a RAID controller?
Not necessarily. The eight rear bays can attach straight to the processor with the x4 direct-attach cable (Rich I/O processors only) or the x2 cable, with Intel VROC providing NVMe RAID, or to an MR controller through the Rear 8EDSFF Controller Cable Kit. The two dedicated boot bays always need an additional MR216i-p.
What do Multi Vendor and LP mean in the drive names?
Multi Vendor means HPE qualifies the same part number from more than one drive manufacturer, so the maker may vary between shipments. LP is the Low Profile LFF carrier HPE uses from Gen10 Plus onward; LPC is the same carrier on the LFF SSDs, and EC1 is the E3.S carrier.
