HPE ProLiant XL220a Gen8 v2 Drives
The HPE ProLiant XL220a Gen8 v2 is a tray with two single-socket server nodes, and each node takes two hot-plug SFF SmartDrive (SC) drives. HP lists 6G SAS and SATA hard drives and 6G SATA SSDs for them. Each node needs its own controller, an HP Smart Array P430 or the HP H220 Host Bus Adapter, with the matching HP Apollo 6000 Mini-SAS cable; both nodes must be configured identically, so drives are ordered in pairs of matching part numbers.

Which drives fit the XL220a Gen8 v2
Every bay takes SFF hot-plug SC drives; the controller pair decides the rest. HP's maximum counts:

Which controller? How to tell
- Check the tray. The XL220a Gen8 v2 Compute Tray (753173-B21) is a single-slot tray for the HP Apollo a6000 Chassis, with two single-socket server nodes.
- Count the drives. Each node has two hot-plug SFF drive bays, four per tray. They take SC drives.
- Check the controllers. A tray uses two controllers of the same part number: the Smart Array P430 (698529-B21 or 698530-B21) with cable 757406-B21, or the H220 Host Bus Adapter (650933-B21) with cable 757405-B21.

Three rules before you order
Use SC drives
Each node's two hot-plug SFF bays take SmartDrive drives; every drive HP lists for the XL220a Gen8 v2 has SC in the name.
Pick one controller type for both nodes
HP requires two controllers of the same part number: the Smart Array P430/2GB or P430/4GB, or the H220 Host Bus Adapter. The P430 needs the HP Apollo 6000 Mini-SAS P430 Cable (757406-B21) and the H220 the Mini-SAS H220 Cable (757405-B21), two of the same.
Order drives in matching pairs
Both nodes must be configured identically, and HP says hard drives must be selected in pairs of matching part numbers. Hard drives are not required for a drive-less model.

How many drives does the XL220a Gen8 v2 hold?
Two per node, four per tray. HP's maximum internal storage is 2 x 1TB SAS or SATA hard drives, or 2 x 800GB SATA SSDs.
Does the XL220a Gen8 v2 support SSDs?
Yes. HP lists 6G SATA Value Endurance and Mainstream Endurance SSDs on SC carriers. HP notes that the drive, controller and backplane should run at the same data transfer rate, or the bandwidth is negotiated down.
Which controller does it need?
An HP Smart Array P430 (2GB or 4GB) or the HP H220 Host Bus Adapter, two of the same part number, each with its matching HP Apollo 6000 Mini-SAS cable.
Can the two nodes use different drives?
