vSAS vs SAS SSD: What HPE Value SAS Really Is

    Value SAS is a real SAS drive, not SATA in disguise — but it is single-port and de-featured. Here is what HPE removed, what it kept, and when substituting it is safe.

    The short answer on vSAS vs SAS SSD: Value SAS (vSAS) is a native 12Gb SAS SSD that HPE has deliberately de-featured — single-port instead of dual-port, no T10 PI, 512-byte sectors only, and reduced over-provisioning — to hit pricing close to enterprise SATA. It is not a SATA drive behind a bridge. Substitute it wherever you would have bought enterprise SATA for single-domain internal storage; do not substitute it where you need dual-domain HA, end-to-end data protection, or write-intensive endurance.

    What "Value SAS" actually means

    Value SAS is HPE's mid-tier SAS SSD line, abbreviated VS in part descriptions. It sits between enterprise SATA and mainstream enterprise SAS: near-SATA acquisition cost, meaningfully better throughput than SATA, but lower sustained write performance and less consistent latency than a full enterprise SAS drive.

    The most common misconception is worth killing immediately: vSAS is not a SATA drive behind a SAS bridge or interposer. There is no protocol translation anywhere in the path. A Value SAS drive is native SAS end to end — it speaks the full SCSI command set (SSP), negotiates a real 12Gb/s SAS link, and behaves as a SAS target to the controller. The "value" is in what HPE removed from the feature set, not in bolting a consumer-class interface onto a SAS connector.

    Physical differences: there aren't any you can see

    Put a Value SAS drive next to an enterprise SAS drive of the same capacity and you cannot tell them apart. Both use the same 2.5-inch SFF or 3.5-inch LFF form factor, the same HPE drive carrier, and — this is the part that trips people up — the same one-piece SFF-8482/8680 connector with no SATA notch. A SATA SSD has that visible gap between the signal and power segments. Value SAS does not, because it is genuinely SAS.

    The one real physical difference is invisible from outside: the second PHY is not implemented. An enterprise SAS SSD wires both port A and port B, giving two independent paths to the drive. Value SAS wires one. That single omission is what forecloses dual-domain configurations, and it is the difference that matters most when you are deciding whether to substitute.

    Practically, this means you cannot identify Value SAS by inspecting hardware. You identify it by the SKU and the product description — which is why the verification step later in this post matters.

    Functional differences: what HPE removed and kept

    Value SAS gives up four things relative to mainstream enterprise SAS:

    • Dual-port operation. Single-port only, so no dual-domain or dual-controller redundancy to the drive.
    • T10 PI (DIF/DIX). No end-to-end protection information.
    • Alternate sector formats. 512-byte sectors only — no 520, 528, or 4Kn formatting.
    • Headroom. Reduced over-provisioning on a value-class controller and NAND back end, which caps endurance and steady-state write behavior.

    What it keeps is the reason it outruns SATA:

    • Full-duplex 12Gb/s link — simultaneous read and write, versus SATA's half-duplex 6Gb/s.
    • Full SCSI/SSP command set, with the deeper command queuing that comes with it.
    • Native operation behind SAS expanders, with no STP tunneling overhead the way SATA drives require.
    • Better error recovery and reporting, plus hot-plug and SmartSSD Wear Gauge / SMART data through SCSI log pages.

    Note the endurance row, because it constrains your options more than anything else: Value SAS ships in Read Intensive and Mixed Use only, roughly 1–3 DWPD. There is no Write Intensive vSAS.     Performance: what the numbers actually show

    Against 6Gb enterprise SATA, HPE's published figures for Value SAS show roughly 1.94× random read IOPS, 1.75× random mixed IOPS, 1.5× sequential read bandwidth, and 1.27× sequential write bandwidth.

    The shape of those numbers tells you where the gains come from. Read and mixed random workloads improve most, because that is where full-duplex signaling, deeper queuing, and native expander operation pay off. Sequential write improves least — 1.27× is real but modest — because the value-class back end and reduced over-provisioning limit sustained write throughput.

    So calibrate expectations in both directions. Moving from SATA to vSAS is a genuine step up, particularly for read-heavy and mixed workloads. Moving from mainstream enterprise SAS down to vSAS costs you sustained write performance and latency consistency — the QoS tail is looser. For a database with heavy sustained writes or a workload with tight latency SLAs, that difference will show up.

    When to choose vSAS (and when not to)

    The buying rule is simple. Choose Value SAS anywhere you would otherwise have bought enterprise SATA for single-domain internal server storage. That covers a lot of ground: general-purpose virtualization hosts, file and application servers, read-heavy databases, logging and capacity tiers, and boot-adjacent bulk storage inside a single controller domain. You get more throughput than SATA for close to SATA money.

    Choose true enterprise SAS instead when you need any of the following:

    • Dual-domain or dual-controller HA — redundant paths to each drive require the second port vSAS does not have.
    • T10 PI (DIF/DIX) end-to-end data protection.
    • Non-512-byte formatting — 520 or 528-byte sectors for array-level metadata, or 4Kn.
    • Write-intensive endurance above roughly 3 DWPD.

    Compatibility and deployment cautions

    Two operational points cause most of the trouble we see.

    Never mix interface or drive types within one RAID array. A server can absolutely hold vSAS in one array and enterprise SAS in another, but a single array should be uniform in interface, endurance class, and capacity. Mixed arrays run to the weakest member and make troubleshooting harder than it needs to be.

    vSAS enumerates as a SAS device, so your controller tools will not flag it. Smart Storage Administrator, iLO, and OS-level tools will report a SAS drive, because that is exactly what it is — they do not surface "value" as an interface distinction. That means you cannot audit an existing array to find out whether it contains vSAS or enterprise SAS.     Two further practical notes.     Finally, note the direction of travel. HPE is steering Gen11 and Gen12 ProLiant designs toward NVMe — U.3 and EDSFF E3.S — rather than expanding the Value SAS line. Treat vSAS as the SATA-replacement path for SAS-attached storage you are building or refreshing today, not as the platform you standardize on for the next decade.     What does VS or vSAS mean on an HPE drive?

    VS is how HPE abbreviates Value SAS in part descriptions. A vSAS drive is a native 12Gb SAS SSD with certain enterprise features removed, positioned between enterprise SATA and mainstream enterprise SAS on both price and capability.

    Is HPE Value SAS just a SATA drive with a SAS connector?
