Match the carrier to the chassis before comparing capacities. Only the 8LFF chassis takes 3.5-inch Low Profile drives; the SFF/EDSFF chassis takes 2.5-inch Basic Carrier and E3.S EC1 drives, and can mix the two; the GPU chassis takes eight of either. Inside the SFF bays, SATA direct attach on the x1 cage carries SATA alone, a controller on the x1 cage carries SAS, SATA and NVMe, and direct-attached NVMe at x2 or x4 lanes needs the x4 cage.

Which drive form factor does your DL345 Gen12 take?

Read the chassis column first. The 8LFF chassis is the only one that takes 3.5-inch drives, and the only way it takes SFF drives is the optional 2SFF cage. The SFF/EDSFF chassis never takes LFF, but it can hold SFF and E3.S side by side, up to 36 E3.S drives when it is all EDSFF. Within the SFF bays, the cage and the connection behind it decide the interface.

Choosing the Right DL345 Gen12 Drive

• Match the carrier to the bay. BC for SFF bays, EC1 for E3.S bays, LP for LFF bays; the names on this page carry those tokens.
• Check the cage before buying NVMe. Direct-attached NVMe U.3 needs the 8SFF x4 tri-mode cage with an x2 or x4 cable kit; on the x1 cage, NVMe runs only behind a controller, and the SATA direct-attach configurations carry SATA alone.
• Pick the endurance class for the workload. Read Intensive and Very Read Optimized drives carry the capacity, Mixed Use drives the write endurance; do not mix classes in one array.
• Largest single drives: 30.72TB E3.S NVMe, 26TB LFF SAS or SATA HDD, 15.36TB SFF SAS or NVMe SSD. The document's 288TB LFF maximum is built on 24TB drives; the 26TB models are listed separately.
• Encryption on request. Self-encrypting and FIPS models are listed in every form factor except LFF.

How many drives does a DL345 Gen12 hold?
Up to 24 SFF or 36 EDSFF E3.S drives in the SFF/EDSFF chassis, which can mix SFF and EDSFF backplanes; up to 12 LFF in the 8LFF chassis with the optional 4 LFF bay, or 8 LFF plus 2 SFF; and 8 SFF or 8 E3.S in the GPU chassis. A rear 2SFF x4 cage is an option on all three.

Does the DL345 Gen12 take 3.5-inch drives?
Only in the 8LFF chassis, on the Low Profile carrier. HPE lists Business Critical 7.2K SAS and SATA hard drives from 1TB to 26TB and two 960GB LFF SSDs. The SFF/EDSFF and GPU chassis do not have LFF bays.

Does the DL345 Gen12 support NVMe drives?
Yes, in two forms: 2.5-inch U.3 NVMe Gen4 SSDs in the SFF bays, and EDSFF E3.S NVMe Gen4 and Gen5 SSDs up to 30.72TB. Direct-attached SFF NVMe at x2 or x4 lanes needs the 8SFF x4 tri-mode cage; on the 8SFF x1 cage the configuration tables show NVMe only behind an OCP or PCIe controller.

What is the difference between E3.S and U.3 drives on this server?
U.3 is the 2.5-inch SFF Basic Carrier drive that shares tri-mode bays with SAS and SATA; E3.S is the EDSFF 1T form factor with its own 4EDSFF cages, where the server reaches 36 bays and the Gen5 drives live. Both are NVMe; they are not interchangeable.

What is the largest drive for the DL345 Gen12?
30.72TB, an E3.S NVMe SSD, in both a Gen4 Very Read Optimized and a Gen5 Read Intensive model. The largest hard drive is 26TB LFF in SAS 12G and SATA 6G, and the largest SFF drive is 15.36TB in SAS 24G and NVMe U.3.

What does 512e mean on the LFF hard drives?
The drive has 4K physical sectors but presents 512-byte logical sectors to the host. All of the LFF Business Critical drives from 8TB up are 512e; the 1TB to 4TB SATA models and the 4TB SAS model are not marked 512e.
