HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 Drives

The HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen8 takes LFF non-hot-plug SATA hard drives in its four drive bays. Every pre-configured model HPE lists has a 4 LFF NHP SATA HDD cage that includes 4 LFF hard drive carriers. HPE lists 6G SATA Midline and Entry drives for it, named "Non-hot plug" or "RW". The embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i runs them: HDD bays 1 and 2 support 6.0Gb/s SATA, and bays 3 and 4 support 3.0Gb/s SATA.

Which drives fit the MicroServer Gen8

One bay type fits the MicroServer Gen8; the bay number sets the SATA speed. HPE's maximum counts:

Which bays and which speed? How to tell

Check the drive bays. The MicroServer Gen8 has four non-hot-plug drive bays, numbered 1 to 4, and one optical drive bay, A.
Match the product number. Every pre-configured model HPE lists, such as 819185-xx1, 712317-xx1, F9A40A or G0M45A, has the same 4 LFF NHP SATA HDD cage, so the same drives fit all of them.
Know the bay speeds. On the embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i, HDD bays 1 and 2 support 6.0Gb/s SATA and bays 3 and 4 support 3.0Gb/s SATA.

Non-hot-plug LFF drives

The MicroServer Gen8 has four non-hot-plug drive bays in a 4 LFF NHP SATA HDD cage, which includes 4 LFF hard drive carriers. HPE lists 6G SATA non-hot-plug LFF hard drives for it, named "Non-hot plug" or "RW".

SATA on the embedded B120i

The HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i supports up to 6Gb/s SATA and RAID 0/1/10 only, with no FBWC support. For FBWC, HPE says a standup Smart Array controller card must be configured; HPE lists the Smart Array P222.

Bays 1 and 2 are the 6.0Gb/s bays

HDD bays 1 and 2 support 6.0Gb/s SATA; HDD bays 3 and 4 support 3.0Gb/s SATA. HPE notes that the drive, controller, firmware and backplane should operate at the same data transfer rate, or the bandwidth is negotiated down.

Do non-hot-plug drives from the ML310e Gen8 fit the MicroServer Gen8?

Some part numbers, such as 628065-B21 and 659339-B21, are listed in both QuickSpecs. Check that the part number is on this page.

Does the MicroServer Gen8 support SSDs?

This QuickSpecs lists no SSDs for the MicroServer Gen8. Its Hard Drives section lists 6G SATA non-hot-plug LFF hard drives only.

How many drives does the MicroServer Gen8 hold?

Four LFF drives in its non-hot-plug bays, up to 16TB (4 x 4TB) by HPE's count.

Can I run SATA drives without a controller card?

Yes. The embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i runs SATA drives, RAID 0/1/10 only, with no FBWC support. HDD bays 1 and 2 support 6.0Gb/s SATA and bays 3 and 4 support 3.0Gb/s SATA.

What optical drive fits the MicroServer Gen8?

The optical drive is optional. HPE lists the HPE 9.5mm SATA DVD-RW JackBlack Optical Drive (652241-B21) for the optical drive bay, and G0M45A comes with a 9.5mm DVD-RW included.
