HPE ProLiant Server Memory

Genuine HPE server memory, new and refurbished, organised by server generation. Memory is the part where the wrong choice is hardest to spot. Two kits can carry the same capacity, the same DDR4 label and the same physical form, seat perfectly in the slot, and still leave the server refusing to boot — because HPE memory is matched to a processor generation, not to a socket shape.

What Decides Which Memory Fits

  • Server generation first. Every kit below is scoped to one generation, because that is the boundary that actually governs compatibility. Start from the machine you own, not from the capacity you want
  • Processor generation within Gen10. Gen10 servers shipped across two generations of Xeon Scalable processors running memory at different rated speeds, and the kits are not interchangeable. This is why Gen10 has two entries below rather than one
  • DIMM type cannot be mixed. Registered and Unbuffered will not run together, and neither will RDIMM and LRDIMM. Whichever type is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match
  • Rank and population change the speed. Filling more slots per channel, or fitting higher-rank modules, can make the whole set run slower than any single module is rated for
  • The slowest module sets the pace. Mixing rated speeds is not a failure, but the server runs every module at the lowest one present — so a fast kit added to slow modules buys capacity, not bandwidth
  • Half the slots may be unreachable. On multi-processor servers a portion of the DIMM slots belongs to processors that are not installed, and no memory kit unlocks them

Gen10 is the one that catches people out. Those servers shipped with two different generations of Xeon Scalable processors, and the memory kits for them run at different rated speeds and are not interchangeable — while looking identical in the hand. That is why Gen10 appears twice in the list below. Read the processor model out of iLO before ordering from either page.

Server Memory FAQ

Is HPE server memory interchangeable between generations?
No. A kit built for one server generation will not run in another, even where the capacity, the DDR type and the physical module all appear to match. Buy from the page for the generation you own rather than by capacity alone.

Why are there two Gen10 memory pages?
Gen10 servers shipped with both 1st and 2nd generation Xeon Scalable processors, and the two run memory at different rated speeds. Kits for one do not work with the other, so the two sets are listed separately to stop the wrong one being ordered.

How do I tell which processor generation my Gen10 server has?
Read the processor model from the server's system information or from iLO. The kits themselves are no help here, which is exactly why the distinction is worth checking before you order rather than after.

Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in the same server?
No. Registered and Load Reduced modules cannot run together, and on DDR3 machines Registered and Unbuffered cannot either. Converting a server from one type to the other means replacing every module in it, not adding to what is there.

Will adding faster memory make my server faster?
Only if every module is at the new speed. A server runs all its memory at the lowest rated speed present, so a faster kit added alongside slower modules adds capacity while the whole set keeps running at the slower rate.

Why can I not use all the DIMM slots in my server?
On a server with more than one processor socket, some slots are wired to processors that may not be installed. On four-socket machines in particular, half the slots can sit on a mezzanine board that arrives with the third and fourth processors. Populating them takes processors, not memory.
