HPE ProLiant DL385 G7 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant DL385 G7, new and refurbished. This is the AMD Opteron half of the generation, so it carries 24 sockets — twelve per processor, four channels each, three sockets per channel — and HPE's rule for the server is blunt: do not mix Unbuffered and Registered DIMMs in it.

- Maximum registered: 512GB, reached at 256GB per processor with four 32GB quad-rank RDIMMs and eight 16GB dual-rank RDIMMs
- Maximum unbuffered: 64GB, and no more than two UDIMMs may be installed per channel
- Quad-rank placement: quad-rank modules seat only in sockets 2, 5, 8 and 11 of each processor — one per channel, whatever else is fitted
- Protection: Advanced ECC is the standard mode, with Online Spare available; Advanced ECC is lost if x4 and x8 modules are mixed within channels A and B, or C and D
Four channels per processor, three sockets each, and quad-rank modules go in only four of them. A 32GB quad-rank RDIMM seats in socket 2, 5, 8 or 11 of a processor and nowhere else — and putting a third module on one of those channels takes that processor's memory bus down to 800MHz.

Two rows decide most upgrades. The 1600MHz row is only reachable with an Opteron 6200 series processor, so a 6100 series machine runs PC3-12800 modules no faster than 1333MHz. And low-voltage PC3L parts give up a step of clock for their power saving at almost every population.
Choosing the Right DL385 G7 Memory
- Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered must not be mixed in this server, and the ceilings are not close: 512GB against 64GB.
- Quad-rank kits are not free to place. A 32GB quad-rank module goes in socket 2, 5, 8 or 11 only, and adding a third module to one of those channels takes that processor's bus down to 800MHz.
- Buy in fours per processor. With four channels per socket, four modules at a time fills one per channel; HPE documents equal amounts on both processors as the best-performing arrangement.
- Keep x4 and x8 modules apart within a channel pair. Mixing them in channels A and B, or C and D, drops the server from Advanced ECC to standard ECC.

What is the maximum memory in a DL385 G7?
512GB with Registered DIMMs, which is 256GB per processor from four 32GB quad-rank and eight 16GB dual-rank modules. Unbuffered memory tops out at 64GB.
Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a DL385 G7?
No. HPE's population rules for this server say not to mix UDIMMs and RDIMMs in it. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match.
How many memory slots does the DL385 G7 have?
Twenty-four, twelve per processor, arranged as four channels of three sockets. Only twelve are available with one processor installed, because a DIMM bank is active only when its processor socket is populated.
Where do quad-rank DIMMs have to go in a DL385 G7?
Quad-rank modules install only in memory sockets 2, 5, 8 and 11 of each processor, following the normal population order for those sockets. That is one quad-rank module per channel.
Why does my DL385 G7 memory not run at 1600MHz?
1600MHz is only supported with Opteron 6200 series processors. On a 6100 series machine the bus runs at 1333MHz or below, and it steps down further as the channels fill or if a quad-rank module is present.
Is low-voltage PC3L memory slower in this server?
Usually by one step. HPE's memory bus table shows low-voltage modules at 1066MHz where standard-voltage parts run 1333MHz, and 800MHz where dual-rank standard parts hold 1066MHz.
