HPE ProLiant SL165z G7 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant SL165z G7, new and refurbished. Each tray carries 24 DIMM slots — twelve per processor, four channels each, three slots per channel — and Registered and Unbuffered DIMMs cannot run together in one server, so whichever type is fitted today sets the ceiling you are buying into.

SL165z G7 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), in PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low voltage parts
  • Slots: 24 in total, four channels per processor and three slots per channel; with only one processor fitted, half the slots are unavailable
  • Maximum registered: 256GB, from eight 16GB quad-rank modules plus sixteen 8GB modules, running at 800MHz across the 24 slots
  • Maximum unbuffered: 64GB, from sixteen 4GB PC3-10600E modules at two DIMMs per channel, running at 1066MHz
  • Rank rules: eight ranks per channel is the limit, and a quad-rank DIMM goes one per channel in the centre socket of the three, with the heaviest load furthest from the chipset
  • Protection: Advanced ECC; every HPE DDR3 option kit for this server is one DIMM per kit

Twenty-four slots do not mean twenty-four of anything. The 256GB ceiling is eight 16GB quad-rank DIMMs, one per channel in the centre socket, plus sixteen 8GB modules around them. Unbuffered memory stops at 64GB because only two of the three slots in each channel will take a UDIMM — and Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed in one server at all.

How far does each DIMM type go in 24 slots?

KitRankSlots it can fillMaximum capacity
2GB PC3-10600 Registereddual rank2448GB
4GB PC3-10600 Registeredsingle rank2496GB
8GB PC3L-10600 Registereddual rank24192GB
16GB PC3-8500 Registeredquad rank8, one per channel256GB, with 8GB DIMMs filling the rest
4GB PC3-10600E Unbuffereddual rank1664GB

The 16GB quad-rank kit is the only route past 192GB, and it is also the most constrained part on the list: one per channel, in the centre socket, with 8GB modules either side of it. That is where the 256GB figure comes from — eight 16GB DIMMs and sixteen 8GB DIMMs, not twenty-four of anything. Unbuffered memory stops at 64GB for a different reason: only two of the three slots in each channel will take a UDIMM, so eight of the 24 slots stay empty by rule.

Choosing the Right SL165z G7 Memory

  • Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so one wrong module means the tray will not post rather than simply running slower.
  • Low voltage costs clock on this platform. HPE rates the PC3L kits at 1066MHz where the standard voltage equivalents run at 1333MHz, at one or two DIMMs per channel.
  • One slow DIMM slows the whole server. Mixing speeds is allowed, but the memory bus falls to the slowest module fitted — even when that module sits on the other processor.
  • Fill the third slot per channel only for capacity. HPE documents the 24-module 192GB configuration at 800MHz, so two DIMMs per channel is the configuration that holds the higher clock.
  • Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 192GB fill is twenty-four kits, not one boxed set, and HPE asks for them installed in matched pairs with capacity balanced between the processors.

The second processor is what makes the other twelve slots usable at all — see SL165z G7 processors before planning a large fill. SL165z G7 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in an SL165z G7?
256GB with Registered DIMMs, built from eight 16GB quad-rank modules and sixteen 8GB modules across the 24 slots, running at 800MHz. Unbuffered memory reaches 64GB.

Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in an SL165z G7?
No. HPE's population rules say not to mix UDIMMs with RDIMMs. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match, and converting a tray means replacing every module in it.

How many memory slots does the SL165z G7 have?
Twenty-four per tray, arranged as twelve per processor across four channels with three slots in each channel. With only one processor installed, half of them are unavailable.

Why can I only fit eight 16GB DIMMs?
Quad-rank modules are limited to one per channel and must sit in the centre socket of the three. With eight channels in a two-processor tray, that is eight 16GB DIMMs, with the remaining sixteen sockets taking 8GB modules.

Does PC3L low power memory run slower?
On this server, yes. HPE rates the low voltage kits at 1066MHz where the standard voltage parts of the same capacity run at 1333MHz, at one or two DIMMs per channel.

Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so a 24-slot fill is twenty-four kits.
