HPE ProLiant SL165z G7 Storage Controllers
Genuine HPE Smart Array controllers, cache modules and cable kits for the HPE ProLiant SL165z G7, new and refurbished. The tray boots on an embedded Smart Array B110i SATA RAID controller that handles RAID 0, 1 and 10 over SATA only — every SAS drive in this server starts with an add-in card and the matching z6000 cable kit.
SL165z G7 Storage Controller Specifications
- Embedded controller: HPE Smart Array B110i SATA RAID, RAID 0, 1 and 10, addressing up to four SATA devices and 4.0TB of internal storage, rated up to 3Gb/s
- Switching it on: the B110i is enabled in the advanced section of the ROM-Based Setup Utility rather than being active by default
- Internal SAS cards: Smart Array P212 with one internal and one external port, in zero memory or 256MB; Smart Array P410 with two internal ports, in 256MB, 512MB BBWC, 512MB FBWC and 1GB FBWC
- External SAS cards: Smart Array P411 with two external ports, in the same cache range, for enclosures such as the D2700
- Cable kits: the z6000 P212 SAS 4 hard drive cable kit (574001-B21) or the P410 equivalent (583997-B21), whenever SAS drives are added
- Cache and battery: a 256MB module for the P212 only, a 512MB battery backed module for the P410 and P411 only, 512MB and 1GB flash backed modules, and the z6000 BBWC hardware kit (582653-B21) that battery backed cache requires
The card is only half the order. Adding SAS drives to an SL165z G7 means a Smart Array plus the matching z6000 cable kit — 574001-B21 for the P212, 583997-B21 for the P410 — and battery backed cache needs the z6000 BBWC hardware kit as well as the module. The embedded B110i handles SATA at RAID 0, 1 and 10 and nothing beyond that.
Which Smart Array card does your tray need?
| Controller | Ports | Cable kit required | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| B110i, embedded | SATA, up to four devices | None | The SATA drives already in the tray, at RAID 0, 1 or 10 |
| Smart Array P212 | 1 internal, 1 external | 574001-B21 | SAS drives inside, or one external enclosure |
| Smart Array P410 | 2 internal | 583997-B21 | SAS drives inside, with more cache than the P212 carries |
| Smart Array P411 | 2 external | Not applicable | External storage only, leaving the bays on the embedded controller |
Two things decide this page. The first is internal against external: both of the P411's ports face out of the tray, so it drives an enclosure rather than the bays in front of it, and no cable kit changes that. The second is cache backup: a battery backed module needs the z6000 BBWC hardware kit as well as the module, where a flash backed module has no battery to age and no extra kit against it.
Choosing the Right SL165z G7 Storage Controller
- The card and the cable kit are one purchase. A Smart Array without the matching z6000 cable kit does not reach the drive bays, and the P212 and P410 kits are not interchangeable.
- Check the riser before the card. Both PCI Express slots come from an optional riser assembly, and the second of them is internal only and x4 on an x8 connector.
- Cache modules are not interchangeable across cards. HPE lists the 256MB module for the P212 only, and the 512MB battery backed module for the P410 and P411 only.
- Loading Windows from CD needs a driver path. HPE notes that a diskette drive, or a virtual one via the Lights-Out 100 Advanced Pack, supplies the storage controller drivers during that install.

SL165z G7 Storage Controllers FAQ
Which RAID controller is built into the SL165z G7?
An embedded HPE Smart Array B110i SATA RAID controller, supporting RAID 0, 1 and 10 across up to four SATA devices and 4.0TB of internal storage.
Do I need a Smart Array card in an SL165z G7?
Only for SAS drives or external storage. SATA runs on the embedded B110i; a SAS drive needs a Smart Array P212 or P410 plus the matching cable kit.
Why is my B110i not showing any RAID options?
It has to be turned on first. HPE documents enabling RAID on the embedded SATA controller in the advanced section of the ROM-Based Setup Utility.
What is the difference between BBWC and FBWC on these cards?
Battery backed write cache relies on a rechargeable battery that degrades over time, and on this platform it also requires the z6000 BBWC hardware kit. Flash backed write cache needs neither.
Can I connect an external disk enclosure to an SL165z G7?
Yes. The Smart Array P411 provides two external ports and the P212 one, and HPE lists the D2600 and D2700 disk enclosures for this server.
Which cache upgrade fits which controller?
HPE lists the 256MB cache module for the Smart Array P212 only, and the 512MB battery backed write cache for the P410 and P411 only.
