HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 Memory
Genuine HPE SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8, new and refurbished and tested before shipping. This platform carries 12 DDR3 DIMM slots — six per processor, three channels each, two DIMM slots per channel — and it is one of the Gen8 servers that takes unbuffered ECC DIMMs as well as registered and load-reduced modules.
DL380e Gen8 Memory Specifications
- Memory type: HPE SmartMemory DDR3 Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM) — HPE's rule is not to mix the three
- Slots: 12 total, three channels per processor with two DIMM slots each — with one processor installed, only half are available
- Kits offered: 4GB, 8GB and 16GB RDIMMs, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB UDIMMs, and a 32GB quad-rank LRDIMM — one DIMM per kit
- Speed: DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 kits in standard and low-voltage PC3L form; the E5-2400 v2 table holds 1600 MT/s at 1 and 2 DIMMs per channel
- Maximum capacity: 384GB from 12 × 32GB LRDIMM at 1333MHz, 192GB from 12 × 16GB RDIMM, 96GB from 12 × 8GB UDIMM
Two DIMMs per channel is the whole architecture. The DL380e Gen8 has three memory channels per processor with two DIMM slots each — twelve slots in total, and only six of them live when one processor is installed. That makes DIMM type the lever: 96GB on 8GB UDIMMs, 192GB on 16GB RDIMMs, and the stated 384GB only on 32GB quad-rank LRDIMMs at 1333MHz.
How much memory can the DL380e Gen8 hold?
| Configuration | Total capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 6 × 8GB (one processor) | 48GB | One CPU lights only six of the twelve slots |
| 12 × 8GB RDIMM | 96GB | Two processors, 2 DIMMs per channel |
| 12 × 8GB UDIMM | 96GB | The stated UDIMM ceiling |
| 12 × 16GB RDIMM | 192GB | The RDIMM ceiling, at 1600 or 1333MHz |
| 12 × 32GB LRDIMM | 384GB | The platform maximum, at 1333MHz |
Read the third column before buying for capacity. The DL380e Gen8 stops at two DIMMs per channel, so there is no third-DIMM step-down to design around — the caps are DIMM type and processor. Only the 32GB quad-rank LRDIMM reaches 384GB, and HPE rates it at 1333MHz.
Choosing the Right DL380e Gen8 Memory
- The processor sets the clock. HPE rates the E5-2470, E5-2450 and the E5-2420 v2 through E5-2470 v2 parts at 1600/1333/1066MHz, the E5-2440, E5-2430, E5-2420, E5-2450L, E5-2407 v2 and E5-2403 v2 at 1333/1066MHz, and the E5-2407, E5-2403 and E5-2430L at 1066MHz.
- Never mix the three types, and do not carry DIMMs over: HPE states memory from previous generation servers is not qualified here.
- Balance across sockets. HPE recommends balancing capacity between processors, loading channels similarly, and seating the heaviest-rank DIMM furthest out.
- Mixing rules that do apply: 1.35V and 1.5V RDIMMs may be mixed, though all are powered at the higher voltage, and different speeds may be mixed with the server picking a common optimal speed.
- Background reading: memory rank in HPE servers, why memory speed matters, and what CAS latency means.

DL380e Gen8 Memory FAQ
How much RAM does the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 support?
The QuickSpecs state 384GB, quoted as 12 x 32GB LRDIMM at 1333MHz. The registered maximum is 192GB from 12 x 16GB RDIMM at 1600 or 1333MHz, and the unbuffered maximum is 96GB from 12 x 8GB UDIMM at 1333MHz.
What type of memory does the DL380e Gen8 use?
HPE SmartMemory DDR3 in three forms: Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM). Listed kits are 4GB, 8GB and 16GB RDIMMs, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB UDIMMs, and a 32GB quad-rank LRDIMM. HPE's guideline is not to mix the three types.
How many DIMM slots does the DL380e Gen8 have?
Twelve - six per processor, across three memory channels per processor with two DIMM slots on each channel. If only one processor is installed, only half of the DIMM slots are available.
What is the maximum memory speed of the DL380e Gen8?
DDR3-1600, and only with the right processor. HPE lists the E5-2470, E5-2450 and the E5-2420 v2, E5-2430 v2, E5-2430L v2, E5-2440 v2, E5-2450 v2, E5-2450L v2 and E5-2470 v2 at 1600/1333/1066MHz, while the E5-2407, E5-2403 and E5-2430L top out at 1066MHz.
Can I use unbuffered UDIMMs in a DL380e Gen8?
Yes. Unbuffered ECC DIMMs are listed for this server in 2GB, 4GB and 8GB kits, with a maximum UDIMM population of 12 and a stated ceiling of 96GB. They must not be mixed with RDIMMs or LRDIMMs.
Can I use memory from an older HP server in the DL380e Gen8?
No. The QuickSpecs state that HP memory from previous generation servers is not qualified on the DL380e Gen8, that certain SmartMemory features such as memory authentication and enhanced performance may not be supported, and that HPE SmartMemory is required to realize the documented performance.
