HPE ProLiant DL380 G6 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant DL380 G6, new and refurbished. The server carries 18 DIMM slots — nine per processor, three per channel — and two rules shape every upgrade: Registered and Unbuffered cannot run together, and rank decides how many of those eighteen slots you are allowed to fill.
DL380 G6 Memory Specifications
- Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including a low power quad-rank part
- Slots: 18 in total, three channels per processor and three slots per channel; with only one processor installed, half the slots are unavailable
- Maximum registered: 192GB, using twelve 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 modules — the largest DIMM HPE documents for this server
- Maximum unbuffered: 48GB, using twelve 4GB Unbuffered modules
- Rank limits: up to eight ranks per channel, no more than two quad-rank DIMMs per channel, and no more than two UDIMMs per channel with the third slot left empty
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC multi-bit error protection, plus Mirroring and Lockstep, both of which require channel 3 to be left unpopulated
Rank decides the ceiling, not slot count. Only two quad-rank DIMMs are allowed per channel, so the 192GB maximum fills twelve of the eighteen slots with 16GB modules — while eighteen 8GB dual-rank DIMMs fill every slot and total 144GB. Decide which number you actually need before ordering a single kit.
How many of the 18 slots can you actually fill?
| Module | Slots that can be populated | Maximum capacity | Speed at 1 DIMM per channel |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8GB dual-rank RDIMM | 18 | 144GB | 1333MHz on PC3-10600, 1066MHz on PC3-8500 |
| 16GB quad-rank RDIMM | 12 | 192GB | 1066MHz |
| 4GB quad-rank RDIMM | 12 | 48GB | 1066MHz |
| 4GB dual-rank UDIMM | 12 | 48GB | 1333MHz |
Rank, not slot count, sets the ceiling here. Quad-rank modules are the only route to 192GB, and they cost you the third slot in every channel; filling all eighteen slots with 8GB dual-rank parts gets you 144GB instead. Unbuffered is capped at twelve slots whatever its rank, which is why it stops at 48GB and why a machine bought for capacity wants Registered from the start.
Choosing the Right DL380 G6 Memory
- Check which type is already fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so a single wrong module means the server will not post rather than simply running slower.
- 1333MHz needs a 95W processor. HPE requires a 95 Watt CPU for 1333MHz DIMM speeds; every other processor in this family runs memory at up to 1066MHz, whatever the modules are rated for.
- Expect a speed step as the channels fill. Three DIMMs per channel brings the whole bank down to 800MHz, and quad-rank parts drop to 800MHz at two per channel.
- Mixed speeds fall to the slowest module. One 1066MHz DIMM pulls the bus to 1066MHz even if it sits on the other processor, and voltages must not be mixed at all.
- Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 96GB upgrade is twelve 8GB kits, not one boxed set.

Memory speed is set by the processor as much as by the module — see the DL380 G6 processors before deciding on clock, since only the 95W parts hold 1333MHz. DL380 G6 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a DL380 G6?
192GB with Registered DIMMs, reached with twelve 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 modules in a two-processor server. A single-processor server reaches half of that, because only half the DIMM slots are available.
Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in a DL380 G6?
No. The two types cannot be mixed in the same server. Whichever is fitted today is what any upgrade must match, and converting from one to the other means replacing every module.
Why does filling all 18 slots not give me the most memory?
Because the 192GB maximum uses 16GB quad-rank modules, and only two quad-rank DIMMs are allowed per channel - twelve in the server. Eighteen 8GB dual-rank modules fill every slot but total 144GB.
Why does my DL380 G6 memory run at 800MHz?
Speed falls as the channels fill. A third DIMM in any channel brings the bank down to 800MHz, and quad-rank modules already step down to 800MHz at two per channel.
Which processors allow 1333MHz memory?
The 95 Watt parts. HPE states that a 95W CPU is required for 1333MHz DIMM speeds, and that all other processors in this family run memory at up to 1066MHz.
Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so a twelve-slot fill is twelve kits.
