Two rules decide every memory order on this blade. Registered and Load Reduced DIMMs cannot be mixed, and 1.25V ultra low voltage parts cannot be mixed with 1.5V ones. RDIMMs reach 256GB at up to 1600MHz and LRDIMMs reach 512GB at 1333MHz — but moving between them means replacing every module, so check what is fitted before ordering a kit.
Should you fit Registered or Load Reduced DIMMs?

Registered is the right answer for most of these blades, and the only one that reaches 1600MHz. Load Reduced buys capacity and nothing else: it doubles the ceiling to 512GB but is capped at 1333MHz, and the swap is all or nothing, because every module in the blade has to change with it.
Choosing the Right BL465c Gen8 Memory
- Check what is fitted before ordering a single kit. Registered and Load Reduced are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed, so a wrong module means the blade will not post rather than simply running slower.
- Read the voltage as carefully as the capacity. The PC3U kits listed for this AMD blade run at 1.25V, and 1.25V and 1.5V DIMMs may not be mixed. The 1.35V and 1.5V registered parts may be, at the cost of running the whole bank at 1.5V.
- Memory from earlier generations will not do. HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the BL465c Gen8 Server Blade, and that SmartMemory is required to reach the performance documented for it.
- Expect a speed step on the low voltage parts. The 8GB and 16GB PC3L-10600 modules run 1333MHz at one DIMM per channel and 1333MHz or 1066MHz with both slots filled, where the 1600MHz standard voltage parts hold 1600MHz either way.
- Every HPE DDR3 kit here is a single DIMM. Filling all sixteen slots means sixteen kits, not one boxed set.

Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM in a BL465c Gen8?
No. HPE states that RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed. Whichever is fitted today is what any upgrade must match, and converting means replacing every module in the blade.
How many memory slots does the BL465c Gen8 have?

What are the PC3U ultra low voltage kits for?

Why does my BL465c Gen8 memory run at 1066MHz?
Speed is a function of the module, the population and the processor. The 1333MHz low voltage parts can drop to 1066MHz once both DIMMs in a channel are filled, and HPE documents the Opteron 6300 Series at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz.
