HPE ProLiant BL465c Gen8 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant BL465c Gen8, new and refurbished. The blade takes one or two AMD Opteron 6200 or 6300 Series processors on the AMD SR5690 and SP5100 chipsets, and HPE requires that all processors within the server are identical — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.

BL465c Gen8 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: two, upgradeable from a single-processor blade, taking AMD Opteron 6200 and 6300 Series parts from four to sixteen cores each, every one with 16MB of level 3 cache
  • Sixteen-core kits stocked: the 6380 at 2.5GHz, 6378 at 2.4GHz and 6376 at 2.3GHz, all 115W, with the 85W 6366HE at 1.8GHz, plus the 6200 Series 6278 at 2.4GHz and the 6276, 6274, 6272 and low-wattage 6262HE
  • Twelve-core kits stocked: the 6348 at 2.8GHz and 6344 at 2.6GHz, with the 6200 Series 6238 at 2.6GHz and 6234 at 2.4GHz, all 115W
  • Eight-core and quad-core kits stocked: the eight-core 6328 at 3.2GHz and 6320 at 2.8GHz and the quad-core 6308 at 3.5GHz, alongside the 6200 Series 6220 at 3.0GHz, 6212 and 6204
  • Wattage: the figures in these kit names are AMD Thermal Design Power, and the letters HE after a model number denote lower wattage
  • Kit contents: every processor kit listed here is complete with heatsink and fan or fans

A second processor does more than add cores. DIMMs go in only where the matching processor is fitted, so on a single-processor blade eight of the sixteen memory slots are unavailable. It must also be the same model as the first — HPE requires every processor in the server to be identical.

Sixteen cores or four, and at what clock?

ExampleCoresClockWattageSuits
Opteron 6380162.5GHz115WThread count above all — 32 cores in a two-socket blade
Opteron 6366HE161.8GHz85WThe same core count inside a tighter enclosure power budget
Opteron 6348122.8GHz115WGeneral virtualisation, balancing cores against clock
Opteron 630843.5GHz115WPer-core licensed software, where clock beats core count

Core count and clock trade against each other inside one 115W envelope here, and the ends of that trade are further apart than on most servers. The quad-core 6308 is the fastest core at 3.5GHz and the sixteen-core 6380 gives four times as many at 2.5GHz, so for software licensed per core the small part is often the cheaper machine. The HE parts are the third option: sixteen cores inside 85W, in an enclosure where every blade shares the cooling.

Choosing the Right BL465c Gen8 Processor

  • Both sockets must carry the same part. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical, so going to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the first is replaced as well.
  • A second processor opens the other eight DIMM slots. DIMMs are installed only where the corresponding processor is fitted, so on a single-processor blade half the memory capacity is simply unavailable.
  • HE means lower wattage, not fewer cores. The 6366HE carries the full sixteen cores at 85W instead of 115W, trading clock speed for the power and cooling budget.
  • These wattages are Thermal Design Power. HPE quotes TDP rather than average CPU power here, which is the figure to use when sizing what an enclosure of blades draws.
  • Memory speed follows the processor and the population together. HPE documents the 6300 Series at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz, and the modules fitted decide which applies.

Processor choice sets the memory ceiling and the memory clock — see BL465c Gen8 memory alongside this page, then drives, storage controllers, networking adapters or the full BL465c Gen8 parts listing. The previous AMD generation is the BL465c G7 and the Intel blade of this one the BL460c Gen8, with every model indexed under HPE parts by server model.

BL465c Gen8 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the BL465c Gen8 support?
One or two AMD Opteron 6200 or 6300 Series processors, from four to sixteen cores each with 16MB of level 3 cache. The kits stocked run from the sixteen-core 6380 at 2.5GHz to the quad-core 6308 at 3.5GHz.

Can I mix different processors in a BL465c Gen8?
No. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical, so both sockets carry the same part number.

Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. DIMMs are installed only where the corresponding processor is fitted, so the second CPU is what makes the other eight of the sixteen memory slots usable.

What do the letters HE mean on an Opteron model number?
Lower wattage. The 6366HE, for example, carries sixteen cores at 85W rather than the 115W of the other sixteen-core parts, trading clock speed for a smaller power and cooling budget.

Do BL465c Gen8 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor option kit listed for this blade comes complete with heatsink and fan or fans.

Which processor gives the fastest single-core performance?
The quad-core Opteron 6308 at 3.5GHz, followed by the eight-core 6328 at 3.2GHz. Both sit in the same 115W envelope as the sixteen-core parts, which run at lower clocks to fit thirty-two cores into a two-socket blade.
