HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8, new and refurbished. The blade takes one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 series processors on the Intel C600 chipset, and HPE requires that all processors within the server are identical — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly.
BL460c Gen8 Processor Specifications
- Sockets: two, upgradeable from a single-processor blade; the platform is documented for Intel Xeon E5-2600 and E5-2600 v2 families, and the kits listed here are E5-2600 series

- Six-core kits stocked: E5-2667 at 2.90GHz and 130W, E5-2640 at 2.50GHz, E5-2630 at 2.30GHz, E5-2620 at 2.0GHz, and the 60W E5-2630L at 2.0GHz, each with 15MB of L3 cache
- Quad-core and dual-core kits stocked: the 80W E5-2609 at 2.40GHz and E5-2603 at 1.80GHz with 10MB of cache, plus the two-core E5-2637 at 3.0GHz with 5MB
- Features: Intel Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost on every model except the E5-2603 and E5-2609; an L after the model number denotes lower wattage
- Kit contents: every processor kit listed here is complete with heatsink and fan or fans
A second processor does more than add cores. With only one CPU installed, eight of the sixteen DIMM slots are unavailable and the second mezzanine expansion slot will not work. It must be the same model as the first — HPE requires every processor in the blade to be identical.
How many cores, and at what memory speed?
| Processor models | Cores | Supported memory speeds |
|---|---|---|
| E5-2680, E5-2670, E5-2667, E5-2665, E5-2660, E5-2650, E5-2650L, E5-2637 | 2 to 8 | 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz |
| E5-2640, E5-2630, E5-2630L, E5-2620 | 6 | 1333 or 1066MHz |
| E5-2609, E5-2603 | 4 | 1066MHz |
On this blade the processor sets the memory ceiling as firmly as the modules do. An E5-2603 pins DDR3 at 1066MHz whatever is in the sixteen slots, so the cheapest CPU in the range quietly throws away the value of fast memory. The other end of the table is the same trade in reverse: the E5-2650L delivers eight cores inside 70W, where the E5-2680 delivers eight faster ones at 130W.
Choosing the Right BL460c Gen8 Processor
- Both sockets must carry the same part. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical and that mixing different processor models is not supported.
- A second processor does two other things. It opens the other eight DIMM slots, and it is what makes the second mezzanine expansion slot accessible.
- Check the memory before choosing the CPU. The E5-2620 does not support DIMMs at 1.35V, so a blade full of low voltage PC3L modules rules it out unless RBSU is used to run them at 1.5V.
- Some models close two DIMM slots. With an E5-2690 or E5-2643 fitted, slots 4 and 5 are inaccessible, leaving twelve usable DIMM slots in a two-processor blade.
- Hyper-Threading is not universal. The E5-2603 and E5-2609 carry neither Hyper-Threading nor Turbo Boost, which matters more than their clock speed for virtualised workloads.

Processor choice sets the memory clock and opens the second mezzanine slot — see BL460c Gen8 memory and networking adapters alongside this page. The adjacent generations are BL460c G7 processors and BL460c Gen9 processors, and every model we stock is indexed under HPE parts by server model.
BL460c Gen8 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the BL460c Gen8 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 and E5-2600 v2 series, one or two of them. The kits listed here are E5-2600 series, running from the eight-core E5-2680 at 130W down to the two-core E5-2637.
Can I mix different processors in a BL460c Gen8?
No. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical and that mixing different processor models is not supported. Both sockets carry the same part number.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes, two things. It makes the other eight DIMM slots usable, and it is required before the second mezzanine expansion slot will work.
Do BL460c Gen8 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor option kit listed for this blade comes complete with heatsink and fan or fans.
Which processors support Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost?
All of them except the E5-2603 and E5-2609, which carry neither. The letter L after a model number denotes a lower wattage part, such as the 70W E5-2650L and the 60W E5-2630L.
Which processor gives the best memory speed?
Any of the E5-2680, E5-2670, E5-2667, E5-2665, E5-2660, E5-2650, E5-2650L or E5-2637. Those support DDR3 at 1600MHz; the E5-2640, E5-2630, E5-2630L and E5-2620 top out at 1333MHz, and the E5-2609 and E5-2603 at 1066MHz.
