HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8 Memory
Genuine HPE SmartMemory DDR3 for the HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen8, new and refurbished. The blade carries 16 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels at two DIMMs per channel — and the decision that shapes every upgrade is which of the three DDR3 technologies is already in it, because Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced modules cannot be mixed in one server.
BL460c Gen8 Memory Specifications
- Type: HPE SmartMemory DDR3 Registered (RDIMM), Unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM), in PC3-12800R (DDR3-1600) and PC3L-10600 (DDR3-1333) low voltage kits
- Slots: 16 in total, eight per processor across four channels; with only one processor installed, half the slots are unavailable
- Maximum load reduced: 512GB, using sixteen 32GB quad-rank PC3L-10600L modules at up to 1333MHz and 1.35V
- Maximum registered: 256GB, using sixteen 16GB dual-rank modules; the stocked kits here are PC3-12800R at 1600MHz and PC3L-10600R at 1333MHz
- Maximum unbuffered: 128GB, using sixteen 8GB dual-rank UDIMMs
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC with single device data correction, Online Spare (rank spare) and Lockstep, which requires identical HPE part numbers in each paired memory channel
Registered, Unbuffered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed, and the ceilings are far apart. RDIMMs reach 256GB in this blade, UDIMMs 128GB, and LRDIMMs 512GB — but moving between the three means replacing every module in the machine. Check which technology is fitted before ordering a single kit.
Which DDR3 technology should you fit?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Unbuffered (UDIMM) | Load Reduced (LRDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 256GB | 128GB | 512GB |
| Kit sizes stocked | 4GB, 8GB, 16GB | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB | 32GB |
| Largest module | 16GB dual rank PC3-12800R | 8GB dual rank PC3L-10600E | 32GB quad rank PC3L-10600L |
| Mixing with another type | Not supported | Not supported | Not supported |
Registered is the default and the safe answer for most blades. Load Reduced is the only route past 256GB, but it is an all-or-nothing conversion: every module in the blade has to change, and the 32GB LRDIMM tops out at 1333MHz. Unbuffered exists for lightly configured machines and is worth buying only where the blade already runs it.
Choosing the Right BL460c Gen8 Memory
- Check what is fitted before ordering a single kit. RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed, so a wrong module means the blade will not post rather than simply running slower.
- Memory from earlier generations will not do. HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the BL460c Gen8, and SmartMemory is required to reach the speeds documented for it.
- The processor sets the speed ceiling and the voltage rules. E5-2609 and E5-2603 blades run DDR3 at 1066MHz whatever modules are fitted, and the E5-2620 does not support DIMMs at 1.35V. RDIMMs rated 1.35V and 1.5V may be mixed, but the blade powers all of them at the higher voltage.
- Five processor models cost you slots. With an E5-2690, E5-2643, E5-2643 v2, E5-2637 v2 or E5-2667 v2 installed, DIMM slots 4 and 5 are inaccessible, leaving twelve usable slots in a two-processor blade.
- Every HPE DDR3 kit here is a single DIMM. A 128GB upgrade is sixteen 8GB kits, not one boxed set.
Complete Your BL460c Gen8 Build
Memory speed is set by the processor as much as by the module — see the BL460c Gen8 processors before deciding on clock, and note that a second processor is what opens the other eight slots. BL460c Gen8 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a BL460c Gen8?
512GB, reached with sixteen 32GB quad-rank Load Reduced DIMMs in a two-processor blade. Registered DIMMs reach 256GB with sixteen 16GB modules, and Unbuffered DIMMs reach 128GB.
Can I mix RDIMM, UDIMM and LRDIMM in a BL460c Gen8?
No. HPE treats the three as distinct memory technologies that cannot be mixed within a server. Whichever is fitted today is what any upgrade must match, and converting means replacing every module.
How many memory slots does the BL460c Gen8 have?
Sixteen, arranged as eight per processor across four channels with two DIMMs per channel. With one processor installed, only eight are usable.
Why does my BL460c Gen8 memory run slower than its rating?
The processor decides. E5-2680, E5-2670, E5-2667, E5-2665, E5-2660, E5-2650, E5-2650L and E5-2637 blades support 1600, 1333 and 1066MHz; E5-2640, E5-2630, E5-2630L and E5-2620 support 1333 and 1066MHz; E5-2609 and E5-2603 run at 1066MHz only.
Can I use memory from a BL460c G7 or G6?
No. HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not compatible with the BL460c Gen8 Server Blade, and that HPE SmartMemory is required to realise the performance listed for this generation.
Do HPE memory kits for this blade contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so filling all sixteen slots means sixteen kits.
