HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 Memory
The BL460c Gen9 has 16 DIMM slots, 8 per processor, and takes HPE DDR4 memory. Which kit you need depends on the processor: E5-2600 v4 processors use DDR4-2400 kits; E5-2600 v3 processors use DDR4-2133 kits. The server supports up to 2TB with two processors and 128GB LRDIMMs in every slot.

How processor, population and speed fit together
Each processor has 4 memory channels with 2 slots per channel. The kit rating is the ceiling; the processor model and how many DIMMs share a channel set the speed you actually get.

HPE: depending on the memory configuration and processor model, the memory speed may run at 2400, 2133, 1866 or 1600 MT/s; DDR4 speed is the maximum memory speed of the processor. The QuickSpecs give population guidance only (one DIMM minimum, balance the processors); the picker uses 1, 2, 4 or 8 DIMMs per processor.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Match the kit to the processor
DDR4-2400 kits are listed for E5-2600 v4 processors and DDR4-2133 kits for v3. If you are adding to memory that is already installed, match the part number on the existing DIMM label.
2 RDIMM or LRDIMM, never both
HPE does not support mixing DIMM types, and 128GB DIMMs cannot be mixed with other DIMM capacities within the server. Keep every DIMM in a bank the same capacity and rank, and populate both processors identically.
3 Fill channels for bandwidth
Four matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once; eight per processor fills the blade. With the E5-2699, 2697, 2697A, 2667, 2643 or 2637 v4 (or the 2699, 2697, 2667, 2643 or 2637 v3), slots 4 and 5 are blocked, leaving 12 usable slots with two of those processors.
BL460c Gen9 memory questions
How much memory does the HPE ProLiant BL460c Gen9 support?
Up to 2TB with two processors and 128GB LRDIMMs in every slot. With registered DIMMs the maximum is 512GB (16 x 32GB); with v3 processors and 64GB LRDIMMs it is 1TB. A single processor can use only its 8 slots.
What type of memory does the BL460c Gen9 use?
HPE DDR4 registered and load-reduced DIMMs. E5-2600 v3 processors take the DDR4-2133 kits; E5-2600 v4 processors take the DDR4-2400 kits. Registered DIMMs run from 8GB to 32GB; load-reduced DIMMs from 16GB to 128GB.
Can I use DDR4-2133 memory with a v4 processor?
Buy the family HPE lists for your processor. HPE notes that DIMMs of different speeds may be mixed and the server then runs them all at a common speed, so adding 2133 kits to 2400 kits slows the whole server. If the server already has memory installed, add the same part number.
What speed will the memory run at?
Up to the kit rating with one DIMM per channel, depending on the processor model: 2400 MT/s for v4 kits, 2133 for v3. With two DIMMs per channel on v4 processors, HPE's table shows registered DIMMs at 2133 MT/s and load-reduced DIMMs at 2400.
Why does HPE say some processors leave slots unusable?
DIMM slots 4 and 5 are not accessible with the E5-2699 v4, 2697 v4, 2697A v4, 2667 v4, 2643 v4, 2637 v4 and the E5-2699, 2697, 2643, 2637 and 2667 v3. With two of those processors the blade has 12 usable slots.
