HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Memory

HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Memory

HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8, new and refurbished. Memory on this platform belongs to the node rather than the chassis: each server node carries 12 DDR3 Registered slots and tops out at 384GB, so a three-node chassis is three separate memory configurations that have to be specified one at a time.

SL4540 Gen8 Memory Specifications

  • Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) HPE SmartMemory only — the QuickSpecs lists no Unbuffered or Load Reduced option for this server, and every kit stocked here is a low voltage PC3L part
  • Slots: 12 per server node, six per processor socket, arranged as three channels of two DIMMs; with only one processor fitted, half the slots in that node are unavailable
  • Maximum: 384GB per node, using twelve 32GB dual-rank modules
  • Capacity by module: 4GB single-rank kits reach 48GB per node, 8GB single-rank or dual-rank kits reach 96GB, and 32GB dual-rank kits reach the full 384GB
  • Speed: PC3L-12800R (DDR3-1600) kits are listed against E5-2400 v2 processors and PC3L-10600R (DDR3-1333) kits against E5-2400 processors; actual speed runs at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz depending on the DIMMs and the processor model
  • Protection modes: Advanced ECC multi-bit error protection, Online Spare and Lock Step

The 384GB ceiling is per node, not per chassis. Each node carries twelve DDR3 Registered slots, six per socket, and a node with one processor fitted can use just six of them. A three-node chassis is three separate configurations, so balance capacity across the nodes rather than filling one.

Both columns reach the same ceiling, so capacity is not what decides this page — the processor generation in the node is. HPE lists the two kit families separately, one against E5-2400 and one against E5-2400 v2, and buying to the family already in the machine is the way to hold the rated clock. Memory speed on this platform is a function of the processor's QPI bus speed as much as of the module.

Choosing the Right SL4540 Gen8 Memory

  • Count slots per node, not per chassis. A 3x15 chassis holding three nodes needs three sets of kits, and balancing capacity across nodes matters more than filling one of them.
  • Memory from earlier ProLiant generations is not qualified here. HPE states plainly that previous-generation modules are neither qualified nor warranted on this server, and that SmartMemory is required for the documented speeds and for memory authentication.
  • Populate the first slot of each channel first. For one DIMM per channel HPE fills the light-coloured slots only, and within a channel the heaviest load — the dual-rank module — goes furthest from the processor.
  • Install DIMMs only against a processor that is present. Slots belonging to an empty socket do nothing, which is why a second processor is often what actually unlocks a capacity upgrade.
  • Every kit here is a single DIMM. A full 384GB node is twelve 32GB kits, not one boxed set.

SL4540 Gen8 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in an SL4540 Gen8?
384GB per server node, reached with twelve 32GB dual-rank Registered modules. A three-node chassis can therefore hold 1152GB across the whole machine, but no single node sees more than 384GB.

How many memory slots does an SL4540 Gen8 node have?
Twelve, arranged as six per processor socket across three channels of two DIMMs. With only one processor installed, only six of the twelve are available.

Does the SL4540 Gen8 take Unbuffered memory?
No. The QuickSpecs lists DDR3 Registered SmartMemory only for this server, and every option kit documented for it is a Registered low voltage PC3L part.

Which memory works with E5-2400 v2 processors?
HPE lists the PC3L-12800R (DDR3-1600) Registered kits against E5-2400 v2 processors, and the PC3L-10600R (DDR3-1333) kits against the original E5-2400 series.

Can I reuse memory from an older ProLiant in an SL4540 Gen8?
No. HPE states that memory from previous generation servers is not qualified or warranted on this platform, and that SmartMemory is required to realise the documented performance and features.

Why is my SL4540 Gen8 memory not running at its rated speed?
Speed is a function of the memory configuration and the processor model, and the platform runs DDR3 at 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz accordingly. A 1600MHz kit in a node fitted with an original E5-2400 processor will run at that processor's rate.
