Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8, new and refurbished. Each server node takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2400 or E5-2400 v2 processors on the Intel C600 chipset, and HPE does not support mixing different processor models — so a second CPU has to match the first exactly, and each node in a multi-node chassis is specified on its own.

Every node is specified on its own. Two sockets per node means two processors in a 1x60, four in a 2x25 and six in a 3x15 — and mixing different processor models within a node is not supported, so a second CPU must match the first. With one processor fitted, six of that node's twelve DIMM slots are unavailable.

The two ten-core rows are the interesting comparison on a storage chassis. The E5-2450L v2 gives the same core count and the same 25MB of cache as the E5-2470 v2 inside 60 watts rather than 95, at a much lower clock — which suits a node whose work is feeding drives rather than running hot single-threaded code. Multiply the difference by three nodes and a full drive section, and the power budget is a real decision rather than a rounding error.

Choosing the Right SL4540 Gen8 Processor

  • A second processor must match the first. Mixing different processor models in a node is not supported, so going to two CPUs means two of the same kit unless the existing one is being replaced.
  • The second processor unlocks the other six DIMM slots. With one CPU installed only half of the node's twelve slots are available, which is often the real reason to add one.
  • Moving from E5-2400 to E5-2400 v2 is not a drop-in. HPE documents the upgrade as possible but publishes a customer advisory of requirements and limitations for it, so treat it as a planned change rather than a swap.
  • Specify per node, not per chassis. A three-node machine is three independent two-socket servers, and nothing is gained by matching processors across nodes that do not share a memory bus.
  • Check the wattage against the supplies. Six 95W processors and 45 spinning drives is a different power budget from two 60W parts, and the chassis supplies are shared.
