HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8 Power Supplies

Genuine HPE Common Slot hot-plug power supplies for the HPE ProLiant SL4540 Gen8, new and refurbished. These supplies belong to the chassis, not to a node, so every node in the machine runs from the same pair — and HPE does not support mixing them: all supplies must share the same output and the same efficiency rating or the server reports errors and operation fails.

SL4540 Gen8 Power Supply Specifications

  • Format: HPE Common Slot (CS) hot-plug supplies, mounted at the rear of the chassis and shared by every node in it
  • Outputs: 750W and 1200W, so the supply can be sized to the node count and drive population
  • Efficiency: Platinum Plus units up to 94% with support for Intelligent Power Discovery; Gold units up to 92%
  • Low line derating: the 1200W unit delivers 800W at 100 VAC and 900W at 120 VAC, reaching its full 1200W only at 200 to 240 VAC; the 750W unit delivers 750W throughout
  • Input current: 10A at 100 VAC or 4.9A at 200 VAC for the 1200W unit, 8.9A or 4.3A for the 750W, at 50 to 60Hz
  • DC option: a 750W Common Slot −48VDC unit for racks fed by DC rectifiers, shipped with no power cable and a terminal block for a cord made up on site
  • Cooling: five dual fan modules ship as standard with the chassis

Mixing supplies is not supported, and the 1200W unit is a high line part. Every supply in the chassis must share the same output and efficiency rating, so two 750W units still mismatch if one is Platinum Plus and the other Gold. The 1200W delivers 800W at 100 VAC and 900W at 120 VAC.

What Does Each Supply Actually Deliver?

750W Common Slot Platinum Plusup to 94%750W750W
750W Common Slot Goldup to 92%750W750W
1200W Common Slot Platinum Plusup to 94%800W900W at 120 VAC, 1200W at 200 to 240 VAC

That third row is the one that catches people out. On a 100 VAC feed the 1200W supply gives 800W, barely more than the 750W unit, and at 120 VAC it still only reaches 900W. It is a high line component: it repays the money in a rack fed at 200 to 240 volts and largely does not below that. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for sizing a specific configuration, and on a chassis of this age the honest shortcut is to match what is already fitted unless nodes or drives have been added since.

Choosing the Right SL4540 Gen8 Power Supply

  • Read the label on the installed unit first. Matching output and efficiency rating is a requirement rather than a preference, so the supply already in the chassis is the specification for the second.
  • Size for the whole chassis. A three-node 3x15 with 45 drives spinning is a different power budget from a half-populated single-node 1x60, even though the chassis is the same.
  • Redundancy is two matching units. Redundant power is bought through the power supply option kits, and a single supply is not redundant whatever its rating.
  • Check the cord you actually need. These servers ship with a PDU power cord because SL machines normally sit on rack PDUs; a NEMA cord for a 110V receptacle is a separate order, and the −48VDC unit ships with none at all.

SL4540 Gen8 Power Supplies FAQ

Can I mix power supplies in an SL4540 Gen8?
No. HPE states that all supplies must be of the same output and efficiency rating, and that non-matched units produce errors and failed operation rather than running at the lower rating.

What wattage power supply does an SL4540 Gen8 need?
750W or 1200W, depending on the node count and how full the drive section is. A lightly populated single-node chassis is a very different load from a 3x15 with 45 drives spinning.

Does the 1200W supply really deliver 1200W?
Only at 200 to 240 VAC. At 100 VAC it is rated for 800W and at 120 VAC for 900W, so on a low line feed the gap between it and a 750W unit is smaller than the label suggests.

Do the nodes have their own power supplies?
No. The Common Slot supplies sit at the rear of the chassis and feed every node in it, so power is sized and made redundant for the chassis as a whole.

What is the difference between Platinum Plus and Gold?
Efficiency. Platinum Plus is rated up to 94% and supports Intelligent Power Discovery; Gold is rated up to 92%. The two grades cannot be mixed in one chassis.

Does an SL4540 Gen8 ship with a power cord?
It ships with a PDU cord, because SL servers normally sit on rack PDUs. A NEMA cord for a 110V receptacle is ordered separately, and the minus 48VDC supply ships with no cable.
