HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen8 Memory
The DL580 Gen8 holds its memory on up to 8 memory cartridges (732411-B21), two per processor, with 12 DIMM slots each: 96 slots with four processors. It takes HPE DDR3 SmartMemory as registered DIMMs (8GB and 16GB) or load-reduced DIMMs (32GB and 64GB), never both in one server. The server supports up to 6TB with 64GB LRDIMMs in all 96 slots.

Specifications match the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen8 QuickSpecs. A minimum of two cartridges (one per processor) and two DIMMs per cartridge applies.
How cartridges, channels and speed fit together
Each processor has two 12-slot memory cartridges and, in HPE's words, "eight channels, and each channel supports three DIMM slots". The speed depends on the processor, the DIMM and the channel mode: 1600 MHz needs lockstep mode, a 1600 MHz processor and standard-voltage DIMMs at one or two per channel (the 64GB LRDIMM runs at 1066 in either mode). In independent channel (performance) mode the fastest speed is 1333 MHz.

The processor caps the speed: 1600 MHz on the E7-8893 v2, 8891 v2, 8880L v2, 8857 v2, 4890 v2, 4880 v2, 4870 v2 and 4860 v2; 1333 MHz on the E7-4850 v2, 4830 v2 and 4820 v2; 1066 MHz on the E7-4809 v2. HPE: at least two memory cartridges (one per processor) and at least two DIMMs per cartridge; Lockstep mode needs four DIMMs per cartridge with identical cartridges. The document gives no DIMM-count table; the picker uses 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 or 24 DIMMs per processor (two cartridges).
Three rules that avoid a return
1 RDIMM or LRDIMM, never both
HPE: load-reduced and registered DIMMs are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed within a server. If memory is already installed, match the part number on the existing DIMM label.
2 Two cartridges per processor, two DIMMs per cartridge
Every processor needs at least one cartridge (732411-B21) and every installed cartridge at least two DIMMs. Keep the cartridges of a processor populated identically.
3 SmartMemory, not previous-generation DIMMs
HPE: memory from earlier generations is not qualified or warranted in this server, and HPE SmartMemory is required for the performance features listed for Gen8.

How much memory does the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen8 support?
Up to 6TB with four processors: 8 cartridges with 64GB DDR3 LRDIMMs in all 96 slots. With 16GB registered DIMMs the maximum is 1.5TB.
What type of memory does the DL580 Gen8 use?
HPE DDR3 SmartMemory on 12-slot memory cartridges: 8GB and 16GB registered DIMMs (PC3-14900R at DDR3-1866, PC3L-12800R low-voltage at DDR3-1600) and 32GB / 64GB load-reduced DIMMs (PC3-14900L, PC3-12800L).
What speed will the memory run at?
It depends on the processor, the DIMM and the channel mode. In independent channel (performance) mode the memory runs at up to 1333 MHz, and low-voltage DIMMs drop to 1066 with two or three per channel. Lockstep mode allows 1600 MHz with standard-voltage DIMMs at one or two per channel (1333 with three). The 64GB LRDIMM runs at 1066 in both modes. The processor caps it at 1600 MHz (E7-8893 v2 to E7-4860 v2), 1333 MHz (E7-4850 v2, 4830 v2, 4820 v2) or 1066 MHz (E7-4809 v2).
Do I need the memory cartridges?
Yes. DIMMs sit in the 12-slot cartridges (732411-B21), two per processor; the pre-configured models ship with four or eight.
