HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 Memory
The DL580 G7 holds its memory on up to 8 memory cartridges, two per processor, with 8 DIMM slots each: 64 slots with four processors. It takes HPE DDR3 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) from 2GB to 32GB, installed in identical pairs; unbuffered DIMMs are not supported. HPE rates it at up to 2TB (64 x 32GB) with Intel Xeon E7 processors, and 1TB with Xeon 7500 series.

Specifications match the HP ProLiant DL580 G7 QuickSpecs. PC3L (low-voltage) kits need Xeon E7 processors and the (E7) memory cartridge; the 2GB kit is for Xeon 7500 series only.
How cartridges, pairs and speed fit together
Each processor drives two memory cartridges through its two memory controllers; each cartridge holds 8 DIMMs in four pairs (1A/8A, 3B/6B, 2C/7C, 4D/5D), populated in that order. HPE recommends two cartridges per processor and four or eight DIMMs per cartridge for the best performance.

The picker counts DIMMs per processor (two cartridges). HPE gives no DIMM-count table; the picker uses pairs: 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 per processor, and a minimum of two DIMMs per cartridge applies.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Install identical pairs
HPE: DIMMs must be installed in pairs with identical characteristics, in the lettered order printed on the cartridge, and every installed cartridge needs at least two DIMMs. Using one part number throughout keeps it simple.
2 PC3L kits need E7 processors and the E7 cartridge
Low-voltage (PC3L) kits are supported only with Intel Xeon E7 processors and the (E7) memory cartridge 644172-B21. The 2GB kit (500656-B21) is listed for Xeon 7500 series processors only.
3 Registered only, and balance the cartridges
Unbuffered DIMMs are not supported. For the best performance keep the pairs balanced by letter across all cartridges, and give every processor both of its cartridges.
DL580 G7 memory questions
How much memory does the HP ProLiant DL580 G7 support?
Up to 2TB with four Xeon E7 processors: 8 cartridges with 32GB RDIMMs in all 64 slots. With Xeon 7500 series processors the maximum is 1TB.
What type of memory does the DL580 G7 use?
HPE DDR3 registered DIMMs (RDIMMs) from 2GB to 32GB, rated DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) or DDR3-1066 (PC3-8500), installed in pairs on the memory cartridges. Unbuffered DIMMs are not supported.
What speed will the memory run at?
The processor decides: 1066 MHz with a 6.4 GT/s QPI processor, 978 MHz at 5.6 GT/s and 800 MHz at 4.8 GT/s. HPE states that the number of DIMMs and their ranks do not change the speed, and that 1333-rated DIMMs run at 1066.
Do I need the memory cartridges?
Yes. DIMMs sit in the cartridges, two per processor. The E7 configure-to-order server ships with four; 644172-B21 adds more, up to eight.
