HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL580 G7, new and refurbished. The chassis is upgradeable to four processors on the Intel 7500 chipset, and the single check worth making before you order is which family the machine was built for — Xeon E7 parts and Xeon 7500 parts are not interchangeable here.

DL580 G7 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets and families: four sockets on an Intel 7500 chipset with four high-speed interconnects up to 6.4GT/s, taking Intel Xeon E7 series or Xeon 7500 series processors from quad-core to ten-core
  • Eight-core kits stocked: X7560 at 2.26GHz and 130W, X7550 at 2.00GHz and 130W, and the 95W L7555 at 1.86GHz
  • Six-core kits stocked: X7542 at 2.66GHz and 130W, E7540 at 2.00GHz and 105W, and E7530 at 1.86GHz and 105W
  • Quad-core kit stocked: E7520 at 1.86GHz and 95W
  • Cache: 24MB of level 3 cache on X7560 and L7555, 18MB on X7550, X7542, E7540 and E7520, and 12MB on E7530
  • Kit contents: each kit contains one processor, complete with heatsink and fans

Xeon E7 and Xeon 7500 are not a straight swap in this chassis. HPE supports the E7-4800 series only in the DL580 G7 (E7) configure-to-order server and the E7 pre-configured models, and the memory ceiling moves with the family: 2TB on E7 series, 1TB on 7500 series. The kits listed here are 7500 series, each holding one processor complete with heatsink and fans.

That last row is the one that costs people a returned part. HPE supports the Intel Xeon E7-4800 series only in the DL580 G7 (E7) configure-to-order server and the E7 pre-configured models, so a chassis built on the 7500 series stays on the 7500 series — which is exactly what the kits listed here are. The trade within that family is clock against wattage: an L7555 gives eight cores inside 95 watts, while an X7560 gives eight faster cores and asks for 130.

Choosing the Right DL580 G7 Processor

  • Identify the family before anything else. A Xeon E7 kit has no home in a 7500 series chassis, and the memory ceiling moves with it: 1TB against 2TB.
  • Every processor needs its two memory cartridges. Each socket is wired to two cartridge slots, and HPE does not recommend running a processor whose cartridges are absent — it works, but with high memory access latency.
  • The processor sets the memory clock, and nothing else does. A 6.4GT/s QPI runs DDR3 at 1066MHz, 5.6GT/s at 978MHz and 4.8GT/s at 800MHz, regardless of how many DIMMs are fitted.
  • Budget the power before the fourth socket. Four-processor models ship four power supplies against two on a two-processor model, so a socket upgrade is usually a power supply order too.
  • Know which kit you are buying. In HPE's configure-to-order scheme a two-processor build takes a single -L21 kit, a three-processor build adds one -B21 and a four-processor build adds two; the option kits listed here are -B21 kits holding one processor each.

DL580 G7 Processors FAQ

How many processors does a DL580 G7 support?
Four. HPE lists the server as upgradeable to quad processors on the Intel 7500 chipset.

Which processors does the DL580 G7 support?
Intel Xeon E7 series and Intel Xeon 7500 series parts, from a quad-core E7520 up to ten-core E7 models. The kits stocked here are 7500 series: X7560, X7550, L7555, X7542, E7540, E7530 and E7520.

Can I fit a Xeon E7 processor in any DL580 G7?
No. HPE supports the Intel Xeon E7-4800 series only in the DL580 G7 (E7) configure-to-order server and the E7 pre-configured models. A chassis built on the 7500 series takes 7500 series parts.

Does adding a processor affect the memory?
Yes, in two ways. Each processor is wired to two of the eight memory cartridge slots, so a new processor without cartridges runs with high memory access latency, and the processor family also sets the ceiling at 1TB or 2TB.

Do DL580 G7 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Each option kit contains one processor complete with heatsink and fans.

What is the difference between an -L21 and a -B21 processor kit?
They are HPE's configure-to-order kit types. A two-processor build uses a single -L21 kit, a three-processor build adds one -B21, and a four-processor build adds two -B21 kits. The option kits listed on this page are -B21 kits.
