HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 Networking Adapters
Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL580 G7, new and refurbished. The server already carries four Gigabit ports on the embedded NC375i, so an add-in card here is about 10 Gigabit, fibre, or port count — and about whether the chassis has the slots, because five is all it has until an I/O expansion kit goes in.
DL580 G7 Networking Specifications
- Embedded networking: HPE NC375i Integrated Quad Port Gigabit Server Adapter, four RJ-45 ports on the rear panel
- Embedded 10GbE option: HPE documents an optional dual-port 10GbE upgrade that replaces two of the four Gigabit ports rather than adding to them
- Management port: a separate iLO 3 remote management NIC, independent of the four data ports
- Standard expansion: five PCI Express Gen2 slots on the main I/O board, slots 7 to 11 — two x8 and three x4, all full-length and full-height
- Gigabit cards stocked: NC112T single port, NC360T dual port, NC365T four-port, NC375T quad port, NC382T and NC373T dual-port Multifunction adapters, and the NC373F Multifunction 1000SX fibre adapter
- 10 Gigabit cards stocked: NC522SFP, NC524SFP and NC550SFP dual-port SFP+ server adapters, with a documented minimum of 2GB of server memory per adapter
This server has five slots, not eleven, until an expansion kit goes in. The main I/O board carries five PCI Express Gen2 slots — two x8 and three x4, in slots 7 to 11 — and the PCI Express or PCI-X combo I/O expansion kits are what take it to eleven. Every slot is full-length and full-height, so a low-profile bracket needs swapping before the card will secure.
How Many Cards Will This Chassis Take?
| I/O configuration | Slots | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Main I/O board, as standard | 5 | Two PCIe 2.0 x8 and three PCIe 2.0 x4, in slots 7 to 11 |
| PCI Express I/O expansion kit | 11 | Adds four PCIe 2.0 x8, one PCIe 2.0 x4 and one PCIe 1.1 x4 |
| PCI-X combo I/O expansion kit | 11 | Adds two PCIe 2.0 x16, one PCIe 2.0 x4 and two PCI-X |
Five slots disappear quickly on a four-socket server once a Smart Array card and a fibre channel adapter are in place, which is why the I/O expansion kits exist — and the PCI-X combo kit is the only route to a PCI-X card in this chassis. Worth knowing before you plan around a x16 card: slots 9 and 11 are physically x16 but operate electrically at x8.
Choosing the Right DL580 G7 Network Adapter
- Count the embedded ports first. Four Gigabit ports are already on the back of the machine, and a fifth is the iLO 3 management NIC.
- Budget memory for 10 Gigabit. A minimum of 2GB of server memory is required for each 10GbE adapter fitted, and no more than two 10GbE devices are supported in a single ProLiant server.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. Direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones, are bought apart from the SFP+ card.
- Every slot is full-length and full-height. A card supplied on a low-profile bracket needs its full-height bracket fitted before it will secure properly in this chassis.
- Keep the primary video controller in slots 7 to 11. HPE notes that a graphics card in an I/O expansion slot cannot be the primary controller and gives no video during boot.

DL580 G7 Networking Adapters FAQ
How many network ports does a DL580 G7 have as standard?
Four. The embedded HPE NC375i Integrated Quad Port Gigabit Server Adapter provides four RJ-45 ports, and a separate port serves iLO 3 management.
How many expansion slots does the DL580 G7 have?
Five as standard, on the main I/O board in slots 7 to 11 - two PCIe 2.0 x8 and three PCIe 2.0 x4. An I/O expansion kit takes the server up to eleven slots.
Does the DL580 G7 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in SFP+ adapter. HPE also documents an optional dual-port 10GbE upgrade for the embedded networking, which replaces two of the four Gigabit ports.
Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
A minimum of two gigabytes of server memory is required for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, and no more than two 10GbE devices are supported in one server.
Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer runs, are purchased separately from the adapter.
Will a low-profile card fit a DL580 G7?
Every slot in this chassis is full-length and full-height, so a card shipped on a low-profile bracket needs its full-height bracket fitted before it will secure correctly.
