Match the kit to the processor generation before anything else. DDR4-2933 kits run only with 2nd generation Xeon Scalable processors and DDR4-2666 kits only with 1st generation — this is a supported-or-not rule, not a speed step-down. And a two-processor server has 24 usable DIMM slots, not 48, however many kits you buy.

Which DDR4 kits match your processor generation?

The generation rule is absolute in both directions, and it is not a speed step-down: a 2933 kit in a 1st generation machine is not a slow DIMM, it is an unsupported one. Read the second digit of the processor model number, which HPE uses to denote the generation, and buy the matching kit. Above 1TB per socket the processor matters again, because only M and L suffix parts address that much memory.

Choosing the Right DL560 Gen10 Memory

• Count the processors before counting the slots. A two-processor server has 24 usable DIMM slots, not 48, and no memory kit unlocks the other 24 — the CPU mezzanine board and two more processors do.
• Populate six channels per processor evenly. Buying in sixes per CPU keeps the controllers balanced; the second DIMM per channel is what takes a 1st generation machine from 768GB to 1.5TB per socket.
• Registered and Load Reduced cannot share a server. Converting from one to the other means replacing every module, which on a fully populated four-socket machine is 48 of them.
• Persistent memory has its own rules. It needs 2nd generation processors, rules out single rank x8 DDR4-2933 kits, and is not supported alongside the 800W −48VDC power supply.
• Every HPE kit here is a single DIMM. A 1.5TB fill is 48 separate kits, not one boxed set.

What is the maximum memory in a DL560 Gen10?
6TB using 128GB Load Reduced DIMMs in all 48 slots. With Registered DIMMs the ceiling is 3TB on 2nd generation processors and 1.5TB on 1st generation.

Can I use DDR4-2933 memory in a DL560 Gen10?
Only with 2nd generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors - the 82xx, 62xx and 52xx models. A server running 1st generation 81xx, 61xx or 51xx processors takes DDR4-2666 kits instead.

Can I mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in a DL560 Gen10?
No. Registered and Load Reduced are distinct memory technologies and HPE does not support mixing them in one server. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match.

Does adding memory need a fourth processor?
