HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10, new and refurbished. This server has no fixed LAN on motherboard, so its data ports come entirely from adapters — and the first thing to establish is whether you need a FlexibleLOM card for the FLR slot or a standup card for a PCIe slot, because the two will not swap.

DL560 Gen10 Networking Specifications

  • FlexibleLOM slot: one, taking 1Gb, 10Gb or 10/25Gb FlexibleLOM adapters, identified by FLR in the adapter name
  • PCIe expansion: up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots for standup adapters, but only three of them exist with a single processor fitted
  • Slot dependency: slots 4 to 6 need a second processor and the secondary riser; slots 7 and 8 need the tertiary riser, which cannot be fitted alongside four power supplies
  • Speeds stocked: 1 Gigabit copper, 10 Gigabit in BASE-T and SFP+, and 10/25 Gigabit SFP28, in both FlexibleLOM and standup forms
  • Converged adapters: FlexFabric and Converged Network Adapter parts for combined LAN and storage traffic
  • Memory requirement: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed
  • Management port: a dedicated HPE iLO 5 remote management network port, separate from every data adapter, plus an iLO front service port

FLR in the name means the FlexibleLOM slot, and nothing else. This server has no fixed LAN on motherboard, so every data port comes from an adapter — one FlexibleLOM card plus whatever standup PCIe cards the slots allow. With a single processor installed that is three PCIe slots, so check the processor count before ordering a card.

FlexibleLOM or standup PCIe card?

The naming does the work: an adapter with FLR in its name is a FlexibleLOM card and fits nothing else, and a card without it is a standup PCIe adapter that will not seat in the FlexibleLOM slot. Many of the stocked adapters come in both forms of the same silicon — the 640FLR-SFP28 and 640SFP28, for instance — so choosing is a matter of which slot you actually have free.

Choosing the Right DL560 Gen10 Network Adapter

  • Count your processors before counting slots. A one-processor server has three PCIe slots; the FlexibleLOM slot is the only networking position guaranteed to exist.
  • Four power supplies cost you the tertiary riser. There is no space for it, so slots 7 and 8 and a four-PSU build are mutually exclusive.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. BASE-T and SFP28 cards at the same rating do not connect to each other, and a 25Gb card needs 25Gb optics or direct attach cable.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. Direct attach copper for short runs, transceivers and fibre for longer ones, bought apart from the adapter.
  • Budget memory for 10 Gigabit. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter fitted, which is worth checking on a lightly populated four-socket machine.

DL560 Gen10 Networking Adapters FAQ

Does the DL560 Gen10 have onboard network ports?
No fixed ones. HPE configures this server with a FlexibleLOM slot rather than a soldered LAN on motherboard, so the data ports come from whichever FlexibleLOM adapter is fitted, plus any standup PCIe cards.

What is the difference between an FLR adapter and a standard one?
FLR adapters fit the FlexibleLOM slot and nothing else; standup adapters fit PCIe expansion slots and will not seat in the FlexibleLOM slot. Several adapters are sold in both forms of the same chipset.

How many PCIe slots does a DL560 Gen10 have?
Up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots, but only three of them with one processor installed. Slots 4 to 6 need a second processor and the secondary riser, and slots 7 and 8 need the tertiary riser.

Can I fit the tertiary riser and four power supplies?
No. HPE states there is no space for a tertiary riser when four power supplies are installed, so slots 7 and 8 are unavailable on a four-PSU build.

Does the DL560 Gen10 support 25 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, in both forms. The 10/25Gb SFP28 adapters are available as FlexibleLOM cards for the FLR slot and as standup PCIe cards for the expansion slots.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so several cards in one server assume headroom in the memory configuration.
