HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen10, new and refurbished. This is a four-socket machine with two sockets on the system board: HPE supports one, two or four processors, and going past two means adding the upper CPU mezzanine board as well as the processors themselves.

DL560 Gen10 Processor Specifications

  • Sockets: four, on the Intel C621 chipset, populated one, two or four at a time; the third and fourth sit on the upper CPU mezzanine board with their own 24 DIMM slots
  • Families: Intel Xeon Scalable, 1st generation Platinum 81xx and Gold 61xx and 51xx, and 2nd generation Platinum 82xx and Gold 62xx and 52xx
  • Core range: four cores up to 28, with the Platinum 8180 at 2.5GHz and 205W carrying 28 cores and 38.5MB of L3 cache
  • Interconnect: three UPI links at 10.4 GT/s on 81xx and 61xx parts, two links on 51xx parts
  • Memory addressing: 768GB per socket on most 1st generation parts, and 1.5TB on the M suffix models such as the Platinum 8180M and Gold 6134M
  • Memory clock: 2666 MT/s on 81xx and 61xx parts and 2400 MT/s on 51xx, with 48 PCIe 3.0 lanes per processor
  • Kit contents: every kit is complete with heatsink and fans; the −B21 kits here are the field-installable form, where −L21 kits are factory-integration parts

Processors buy slots here, not just cores. One processor gives 12 DIMM slots and three PCIe slots; two gives 24 slots and opens the secondary and tertiary risers; four gives all 48 DIMM slots and needs the CPU mezzanine board. Every processor must be the same model, and 1st and 2nd generation parts cannot be mixed.

Why does the fourth processor change the whole machine?

Processors fittedDIMM slotsPCIe 3.0 slotsNotes
One123Primary riser only
Two24Up to 8Unlocks the secondary and tertiary risers
Four48Up to 8Needs the CPU mezzanine board; enables the NVMe mezzanine card

Adding processors buys memory slots and expansion slots as much as cores, which is why a partially populated DL560 Gen10 often underperforms its specification sheet for reasons that have nothing to do with clock speed. The interconnect matters at four sockets too: 81xx and 61xx parts have three UPI links and connect in a cross bar where every processor reaches every other directly, while 51xx parts have two links and form a ring in which processors 1 and 3, and 2 and 4, are not directly connected.

Choosing the Right DL560 Gen10 Processor

  • All processors must be the same model. HPE does not support mixing processor models, and mixing 1st and 2nd generation parts is explicitly unsupported, so an upgrade is a matched set.
  • Three is not a supported count. HPE documents one, two or four installed processors, so the step up from two is a pair, not a single kit.
  • The processor sets the memory ceiling and clock. Standard parts address 768GB per socket at 2666 MT/s; M suffix parts reach 1.5TB, and 51xx parts run memory at 2400 MT/s.
  • Check the power budget before the wattage class. Four 205W processors is a different power configuration from four 85W ones, and this chassis is sized in twos or fours.
  • Cooling is already provisioned. Six hot-plug fans ship as standard with N+1 redundancy, so a processor upgrade does not usually mean a fan upgrade.

Processor generation decides which memory kits will run, and processor count decides how many slots exist — see DL560 Gen10 memory and power supplies alongside this page. DL560 Gen10 Processors FAQ

How many processors does a DL560 Gen10 support?
One, two or four Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Two sockets are on the system board; a third and fourth require the upper CPU mezzanine board, which also carries the second bank of 24 DIMM slots.

Can I install three processors in a DL560 Gen10?
HPE documents one, two or four installed processors for this server. Plan the step up from two sockets as a pair of matching kits rather than a single one.

Can I mix processor models in a DL560 Gen10?
No. HPE does not support mixing different processor models, and mixing 1st generation 81xx, 61xx or 51xx parts with 2nd generation 82xx, 62xx or 52xx parts is specifically unsupported.

What do the M and L suffixes mean?
They are memory tiers. On 1st generation parts an M suffix processor addresses 1.5TB per socket where a standard part addresses 768GB. On 2nd generation parts M reaches 2TB and L reaches 4.5TB.

Do DL560 Gen10 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor kit for this server comes complete with heatsink and fans, and most of the higher-wattage parts ship with the performance heatsink.

What is the difference between a -B21 and a -L21 processor kit?
The -L21 kits are factory-integration parts ordered with a configure-to-order server; the -B21 kits are the field-installable option kits. The kits on this page are -B21 parts.
