HPE ProLiant ML350e Gen8 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant ML350e Gen8, new and refurbished. This tower carries 12 DIMM slots — six per processor, three channels each, two DIMMs per channel — and on the E5-2400 platform it is the processor, not the module, that sets the clock you actually get.
ML350e Gen8 Memory Specifications
- Type: HPE SmartMemory DDR3, Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), in PC3-12800 (DDR3-1600) and low-voltage PC3L-10600 (DDR3-1333); a 32GB quad-rank PC3L-10600L Load Reduced module is also listed for this server
- Slots: 12 in total, six per processor across three channels with two slots on each channel; with one processor installed, only six are available
- Maximum registered: 192GB, as twelve 16GB dual-rank RDIMMs
- Maximum unbuffered: 96GB, as twelve 8GB dual-rank UDIMMs
- Speed ceiling by processor: eight-core E5-2400 parts support DDR3 up to 1600MHz, six-core parts up to 1333MHz and quad-core parts up to 1066MHz
- Protection and prerequisites: Advanced ECC, Online Spare and Lock-step modes; HPE lists the Redundant Enablement Kit (664046-B21) as required whenever a Registered DIMM is purchased
The processor sets the memory clock on this platform, not the module. An eight-core E5-2470 or E5-2450 holds 1600MHz; a six-core part runs the same PC3-12800 DIMM at 1333MHz and a quad-core E5-2407 or E5-2403 at 1066MHz. And HPE lists the Redundant Enablement Kit 664046-B21 as required whenever a Registered DIMM is purchased, so budget for it with any RDIMM order.
Should you fit Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs in an ML350e Gen8?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 192GB (12 × 16GB) | 96GB (12 × 8GB) |
| Kit sizes stocked | 4GB, 8GB, 16GB | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB |
| Extra part required | Redundant Enablement Kit 664046-B21 | None |
| Mixing with another DIMM type | Not supported | Not supported |
Registered is the answer for capacity, at double the unbuffered ceiling, but it is the one that drags a second part into the order: HPE lists the Redundant Enablement Kit as required whenever a Registered DIMM is purchased. On a tower being topped up rather than rebuilt, matching the type already fitted is usually cheaper, because UDIMMs, RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed and converting means replacing every module in the server.
Choosing the Right ML350e Gen8 Memory
- The processor caps the clock, not the DIMM. An eight-core E5-2470 or E5-2450 holds 1600MHz; a six-core part runs the same PC3-12800 module at 1333MHz, and a quad-core E5-2407 or E5-2403 at 1066MHz. Paying for 1600MHz parts in a quad-core tower buys nothing.
- Budget for the enablement kit with Registered memory. The same 664046-B21 kit allows Common Slot power supplies and redundant fans, so if it is already fitted the RDIMM requirement costs nothing extra.
- Voltages and speed grades may be mixed; types may not. HPE allows 1.35V and 1.5V modules in any order and powers them at the higher voltage, and allows mixed speed grades at a common optimal speed — but UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM cannot share a server.
- Populate in threes per processor. Three channels per CPU means three matched modules fill one processor evenly; within a channel, the module with the most ranks goes furthest from the processor.
- Every HPE DDR3 option kit here is a single DIMM. A 96GB fill is twelve kits, not one boxed set.

Memory speed is decided by the processor class as much as by the module — read the ML350e Gen8 processors page before settling on a clock, and power supplies for the enablement kit Registered memory calls for. ML350e Gen8 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in an ML350e Gen8?
192GB, as twelve 16GB Registered DIMMs. Unbuffered memory tops out at 96GB with twelve 8GB modules. A single-processor tower reaches half of either figure, because only six slots are available.
How many memory slots does the ML350e Gen8 have?
Twelve, arranged as six per processor across three channels with two slots on each channel. Install DIMMs only where the corresponding processor is fitted.
Why is my ML350e Gen8 memory not running at 1600MHz?
Because the processor sets the ceiling. Eight-core E5-2400 parts support up to 1600MHz, six-core parts up to 1333MHz and quad-core parts up to 1066MHz, whatever the module is rated for.
Do I need the Redundant Enablement Kit to fit Registered memory?
HPE lists part 664046-B21 as required whenever a Registered DIMM is purchased for this server. The same kit is required for any Common Slot power supply and for redundant fans, so many towers already have it.
Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in an ML350e Gen8?
No. HPE's population guidelines say not to mix UDIMMs, RDIMMs or LRDIMMs. Whichever type is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match.
Can I mix low-voltage and standard-voltage DIMMs?
Yes. HPE allows 1.35V and 1.5V modules in any order and the system powers them all at the higher voltage. Different speed grades may also be mixed, at a common optimal speed.
